As a mattress enthusiast (uh, former salesperson who still enjoys researching new products and such), I giggle-snorted at Jarvis' interior designer's disdain over not having a king-sized mattress. Sure, it's got sixteen inches of width over a queen-size, so maybe it'd help fill out a massive master bedroom-oh, and there'd be some extra frolicking space for Dipper up there-but there's no length advantage so it might very well waste space that could otherwise be used for other furniture pieces. Also, little detail on the Cali King vs King: the former's designed for taller people and, as a result, is four inches longer and four inches narrower than a standard King. Just throwin' it out there in case it's relevant to anyone in the mattress shopping process!

Thats genuinely very interesting, and i have never heard anyone identify themselves as a mattress enthusiast. I didnt even know that was possible, but good on you for finding a niche interest and sticking to it. And im short but i personally move around a LOT and i also have several pets that are allowed to come and go from my bed, so thats good to know about a california king because i need width more than length. Is there a reason its called a california king? Was it invented in california or is it just named after it bc its a long state? I never knew i could have so many questions about mattresses

It's nice to hear someone discuss this kind of experience publicly but it sucks that these experiences are so common. I mean I transitioned from ER to an outpatient clinic, and I know that the communication of stuff to patients is just untimely and shit. But damn I mean we do try. There's an ungodly amount of paperwork, test results, and outside consultations (where the specialist just writes the WORST notes that make next to no sense) in ADDITION to the volumes of patients we see every day. I know it sucks to be on the patient side of things, I really do, I've been there. And we want to do the best work possible for our patients, but we're drowning too.

the doctor discussion reminds me of when my mom got breast surgery to remove her breast cancer and reconstruct her breast afterwards and the nurses wouldn't allow her to eat despite her being diabetic and allergic to most pain killers like morphine. they were sending the doctor messages asking if it was okay for her to eat and after about 5 hours of begging them to let her eat the doctor replied and was like "yea of course she can". they also kept trying to give her pain killers that had morphine as an ingredient and she kept getting really sick.

For the love of god, don't let other people go through the same thing just because you "don't want to make a big deal out of it." Doctors and nurses literally have your life in their hands. At the end of June I was having bad enough constant panic attacks (and palpitations and chest pain) that I almost went to the emergency room for the first time for an anxiety-related problem. I called my psychiatrist and he was on vacation until August. I asked what exactly I was supposed to do considering I was really scared... and I also needed refills on crucial medication. The secretary was like, "well we are sending him messages"... So then I asked if I could see someone else, and they said they would send the other doctor a message and call me back. I never got a call. I was lucky enough to have pulled myself out of it, but it was honestly an emergency. Everyone deserves a vacation, especially doctors, but when you are dealing with life and death situations, have a damn back up plan.

  • @reckless_herb

Psychiatrists are even worse for this problem because they don't like to help patients they aren't established with. You can always find some kind of doctor in a life or death emergency UNLESS it involves psych meds, then you're totally screwed. Your options are tough it out or admit yourself to a psych hospital, both are nightmares.

  • @acrimonyy

    @acrimonyy

    9 ай бұрын

@@EmiEvergiven this is pretty reasonable though. Why would you prescribe someone a med when you have no meaningful knowledge of their physciatric history? Something you prescribe to ease them in an emergency could easily cause a horrible reaction in multiple different ways. Refills are generally handled by the provider on call if your psych is unavailable. If they won't refill your medication then that's something worth bringing up with your psych because there's no reason for them not to, but while I don't know your experience, that has never been an issue for me

I used to work in medical records for a rehab clinic for kids with special needs, and holy hell trying to get updated scripts from doctors was such a nightmare it literally became my full time job at a certain point. I'd sit on hold for upwards of an hour (sometimes longer) just for the person I was talking to to just come back and say, "Oh, Dr. so-and-so is out on vacation. So, they can't sign anything." And when I'd ask when they'd be back some times they'd have no idea, because they work in medical records and don't have access to that information, so I'd just have to keep checking back in every week until the doctor came back. And then when they would personally get on the phone and start lecturing me about "I can't sign anything because that kid needs to come in for their x month check up. You need to tell the parents--" and I'd just have to be like, "sir, I am not the therapist. I just collect the paperwork. I have zero contact with the families. But, I will pass that information along. Thank you." And there were times we wouldn't get anything back for months until the other office's medical records would finally get so fed up with me calling that they'd just go to the doctor's desk and look for our request themselves just to find it sitting at the very bottom of a stack of papers untouched. I could sometimes hear the frustration in their voice when they came back on the phone and were like, "I am going to personally go get this signed for you. You'll have it back within the hour." So, yeah, that job is the sole reason I get nervous anytime I have to go between multiple doctors/services because who knows how reliable the communication between them actually is.

I have ADHD and hypersensitivity, and having things covering my nose is a huge trigger... so like... obviously the sleep study came back and said I had sleep apnea... but I don't think I actually do, because I literally never wake up during the night normally. I also just went to an ENT and he said my nose is literally perfect, so there's no reason that I should have trouble breathing through it, except that I simply cannot breathe well through my nose. As a Canadian who’s been battling the health industry for a few years now, it’s so tiring. Our public health is severely underfunded bc our provincial government is trying to privatize health, so trying to get appointments and doctors to take you seriously is like pulling teeth. I got a CT scan for my sinuses like a year ago and forgot to follow up and my GP just never called me about it lmao. It’s not fun dealing with chronic health and disabilities in healthcare systems throttled by capitalism, especially in the states oof.

Oh boy do I have a lot to say about everything you guys were discussing of healthcare. Back in March 2019, I woke up at 5am to my mom crying and dressing me. I looked over in the hallway and there were cops standing there. Then EMT came and put me on a stretcher. On the way there, one of the EMTs told me they believe I had a seizure. I’d never had one IN MY LIFE. I got my vitals taken at the hospital and that’s it. They didn’t do any kind of testing, just regular vitals. Spent a few hours there, I was awake the whole time, then I got sent home within like 4 hours. My brother kept an eye on me, I started taking a nap and immediately had another seizure (obviously, bc the hospital didn’t bother to figure out what was actually wrong with me). I the ambulance was called ONCE AGAIN and this time I didn’t wake up until I was actually in the back of the ambulance. The seizures were so close together that I literally had the same EMT sitting in the back with me and he let me know I had another seizure. This time I was finally admitted into the hospital. I ended up spending 4 days there, hooked up to an EEG for 3 of them, had a couple other tests done and eventually they were just like “we can’t find anything but we’re gonna put you on seizure meds”. I was on the meds for 3 years and luckily they worked, I haven’t had another seizure since (knock on wood, I’m a year and a half off of those meds). Second story. At the end of 2021 (still on my meds at this point but that’s somewhat unrelated), my period was 3 weeks late. I’ve never been on BC and my period had always been habitually on time at this point. I went to the gyno, got some bloodwork done and they said if they find anything, they’d call me, but if they don’t call me, no news is good news. That same day I ended up getting my period and I never got a call back from the gyno so I was like alright I guess it was stress or something. Fast forward a YEAR LATER to my yearly gyno appt, I mention to them that my periods have still been somewhat not regular and I had a few that were once again 3 weeks late. My gyno says, “oh, did we not tell you? You have high levels of prolactin” and I was like no literally nobody called. So they gave me another blood test and my prolactin was even higher. They tell me at this appointment basically that high prolactin levels could mean I have a BRAIN TUMOR (non cancerous) in the pituitary gland and to come in the following week for another blood test. And then another a little while later. All of these blood tests resulted in the same thing, my prolactin levels getting higher. At that point they referred me to get an MRI, which concluded that I do in fact have a brain tumor. Now I regularly see an endocrinologist and am on medication to help the brain tumor go away. I’ll be on these meds for 2 years and hopefully that will be the end of my treatment for this tumor. Most people ask me if it’s possible these 2 things can be related and I personally don’t know, I’ve only found some research on pituitary gland tumors being connected to seizures because I don’t think there’s tons of research on it. I plan on asking my endocrinologist, and wondering if I should go back to my neurologist to get a closer look, but honestly I fear being overlooked once again. It’s insane the hoops you have to jump through even when you literally are having BRAIN PROBLEMS. Our healthcare is fucked

RE: sleep study. I did one after having lethargy and having insomnia for around 6 years. They said I had some events but it didn't qualify as apnea. The mouth piece was around $500 and not covered. I would suggest getting one you warm up and set yourself first for around $30 and seeing if that helps at all. I have been sick and lethargic since I was like 10, and after countless physical tests, it always comes back to anxiety. So if all else fails to show a problem, thats an avenue to explore. (I've been working hard on mental health for years but there always seems to be something else that needs doing.)

I listened to this on Spotify and had to come over to add my two cents. First, I very recently got a CPAP and it has changed my life! Granted my sleep apnea is severe. But, I'm a total evangelist for them. I sleep more, I sleep better, way fewer nightmares, get up way less. I think of it like my glasses. Do I wish I didn't have to use it? Sure. But it makes my life so much better, it's worth it. On another note, I would really appreciate a quick warning when you all are going to talk about diet stuff. No shade and I'm sure a lot of people wamt to hear about it. But, I would prefer to be able to switch it off. It's hard not to get started thinking about restricting my own diet when I hear other people do it.

I was really invested in the conversation about doctors and the struggle to find solutions to really stressful problems. It sucks so much when you know that something's wrong but don't know to what extent. Doctors have unimaginably hard jobs and like you said, it's not them, it's more a systematic issue I think, but it still sucks so much. I was diagnosed with both a chiari malformation where my skull is pressing into my brain and causing progressive fluid build-up in my skull and a pituitary tumor creating excess hormones to an alarming extent at the same time last year and since then haven't gotten much more than bouncing back and forth with endocrinologist and neurologist saying 'talk to the other doctor about that issue' or waiting months between available appointments. When you can feel things getting worse but you're not an expert and don't know if the symptoms are something to worry about and then no one's available to answer your questions, it's really scary, especially when finding solutions and treatment takes so much time even if appointments could be scheduled regularly. I often have to wait 3-6 months between appointments and I know that's not the doctors' faults but hearing stories of people who pushed things off until they became irreparably bad is scary. I don't know much about sleep apnea but the same concept absolutely still applies. It's scary when things are wrong and I agree with you that it almost would be better to not know details so that you're not worrying without anything to help it. I wish there was a better system in place, but I don't know how these things work. I hope things work out Jarvis! You deserve relief from both the symptoms you've been having and from the worry and stress of having to tug and nudge to find answers.

Omg I feel so seen hearing Jarvis talk about his experience with the sleep study and sleep apnea. I got diagnosed with sleep apnea when I was 27, which made me a bit of an outlier in the waiting room at these sleep related clinics. I have had a CPAP machine and mask for 3 years and it has been lifechanging. I used to get 8+ hours of sleep, wake up, and then need a nap soon after. I now get full sleep and while I still nap sometimes, I don't need to every day like I used to. I now have a steady, stable sleep schedule and don't even need my alarm to wake me up now. Whatever happens, I hope you find what works for you! It's definitely worth exploring your options. Anyway, thanks for another excellent episode Boyzzz

She squeezed my appendix and spleen, told me they were just majorly inflamed and that I had IBS and said nothing else about it. I'm not even sure the diagnoses is officially on record nor do I know how to ajust life accordingly to deal with it. (Also now every time I have major appendix pain I'll never know if it's appendicitis or IBS and I kind of just have to assume it's IBS because I can't just go to the doctor every time I have IBS symptoms.)

If you go the CPAP route, just know that sometimes insurance requires you to be using the machine a certain amount of hours of use for however many months (which can be annoying if you have trouble sleeping). Jarvis-I am also a young person who was diagnosed with mild OSA a little over a year ago. I used to be so tired I was falling asleep while driving, at work, had no energy, etc. I got a CPAP machine, a Resmed Airsense, and it has CHANGED MY LIFE. I have other comorbitities that cause extra fatigue, but, at least my actual sleep is not causing my sleepiness anymore. Dental insert will not provide the same results imo. And the machine is whisper quiet (just don’t get the nostrils only face mask; I recommend the one that goes over the nose fully). Mild OSA is affecting you in ways you could not think imaginable. It took about 3 months of nightly use to start seeing the effects, and it has never gone back. I can remember things again, I can drive again, I can work again. My amount of naps has been reduced by like 90%. -A fellow fatigue-ridden person

It’s pretty much the same laser that dermatologists use to tighten face skin to reduce wrinkles, but they tighten the back of your throat. He’s had 1 treatment out of 6 and it’s made a HUGE difference. 😭🙏 It’s usually about $2,700 CND but they gave us a discount because we signed up and waited a few weeks. He said something like "I'll be watching you from right in the other room" before he left and I just DIDN'T FALL ASLEEP all night out of anxiousness. They didn't get any usable info from me that first night so they monitored me for the following day (different tech) and night (hot tech but they gave me ambien). Eventually they called me to tell me that I didn't have sleep apnea and I'd wasted two days of my life.

Hey physician here, the reason we ask things again and again is because it changes constantly, even if it IS in my record, imma ask again because patients take themselves off meds all the time. Me knowing what you’re actually taking is important for my treatment plan. Also if you go from one office to another, we don’t have access to those records so we have to ask again. There isn’t just one electronic medical record. If people are asking again, it means they care.

on 59:55, in spanish, (or at least mexican, where im from) questions are very differently formatted, since there aren't really any words that are used solely for questions; words like "what" or "where" can also be used in a statement. so when asking something in spanish, it is important to emphasize the tone of the question so the listener understands. this is the same reason there is a question mark at the beginning of a sentence in writing, because it sets the tone while reading. so if someone was answering jeopardy in spanish, it is the tone that makes it a question, rather than the beginning of the sentence.

There's an ungodly amount of paperwork, test results, and outside consultations (where the specialist just writes the WORST notes that make next to no sense) in ADDITION to the volumes of patients we see every day. I know it sucks to be on the patient side of things, I really do, I've been there. And we want to do the best work possible for our patients, but we're drowning too and we HATE that we cant do our patients justice. BTW the forms seem excessive but double checking and redundancy in medicine is partially so we have accurate info (in my ambulance days people would tell us they had no medical problems and them hand me like 15+ meds they take), but also partially so we can bill insurance properly so they dont charge *you* for things that should be covered. PS.S. That sleep study should have been covered. You should NOT have had to pay out of pocket for that shit. Again, someone fucked up the billing and coding.

About CPap, my dad refused forever to use one until he experienced what sleep was like with it and now he loves it.
