Another thing is occasionally if you just buy a drink, the entire machine will light up like you hit a jackpot. This results in you being able to select a 2nd drink for free.

I was in the Vending machine business for over 25 yrs. Japan is the Mt Olympus (home of the gods) in the VM game. I had the privilege of attending many a conference in Japan. They put us to shame in their ingenuity and attention to detail. It helps that Japanese people LOVE Vending machines. ❤

Wow, a little Sissy
Vending machine in Japan tells the temperature of drinks and it works in "almost any vending machine you see around the city?" Now I ain't no geography expert, but ain't Japan a country and not a city?
as someone who is very specific about how cold my drinks are, this would be super helpful :)

July through September are often sunny and very hot and humid in Tokyo. Please be careful of heat stroke (avoid hangovers and caffeine intake) and enjoy sightseeing! 😆😆😆🥰 From Japanese.

Please be careful people. When you see the sun, then its hotter in comparison to the night without the sun. Keep that in mind! If the "sun" looks white in the night, then its in fact the moon what you're seeing!

In America if you walk up to a soda machine, and press the mountain dew button 3 times and press the coin return button twice, and then the mt dew button one more time... NOT A DAMN THING WILL HAPPEN 😂

Pat always entertain us with Japan I love it!!!❤❤❤
Fun Fact: This is kind of how technicians enter Diagnotic/Mantenance Mode on Vending Machines where you can also change the price on items and how much of those items are dispensed. You can EVEN get some money through the coin/change return! You just need to know the code or combo of buttons you have to push. I don’t know about Japan, but A LOT of the simple Soda Vending Machines in the US uses code/button order as simple as 1-3-2-4. Now go out there and see if you can figure out which button corresponds with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, etc… Thanks Pat for pointing this out! 🤣
Watching this hack, I remember a cursed vending machine horror story from a manga. This is unrelated to the hack but if you're interested: There's a vending machine near an elementary school where kids usually buy drinks from during the summer to beat the heat. Rumors spread among the children about a myth of the vending machine where you put in coins in an order (which I don't know of, they never show em) and you can get another drink for free. But the rules is you can only do this for 10 times. Pretty generous right? So a kid figured out the order of the coin and did this about 5 times. When his friends found out, they warned him not to to do it anymore or something bad is gonna happen. Ignorant and stubborn, he did it for the 6th time but instead of cold drinks, the machine spit out hot corn soup. This pissed off the kid. He kicked the and hit the machine over and over and keep on using the coin myth cuz he's not getting what he want, not knowing he already used the myth 10 times. For the 11th time he did it, a clump of hair came out instead of drinks. Guess what? Lil brat got sucked in the machine and never seen again. This is probably not a legend, just a story from a manga I read when I was a kid. Sorry if things doesn't make sense since I don't remember every detail

Wish I knew this before. Ordered a can of chocolate milk, it ended up being a can of hot cocoa!
My hack is to punch the glass on the machine and get the drink for free.
I always stop at the vending if i go there Good to know 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I did this and the machine opened and led to a bar/restaurant 😂 super useful tho I love the hot drinks
I can guarantee you in America those out door vending machine will be broken in without consequences.

Push two buttons at the same time hoping that two cans will fall down 😂
I remember 25 years ago when I had carrot juice from a vending machine and also later cold coffee

ps love the japanese customs plus love cherry blossom and beautiful dress ,forget word of japanese dress but so beautiful.😊

Ill take the buy 1 get 1 hack when you tilt the machine as its dropping one or even kick it to make them all come out😂
Pat, with all due respect, your finger look like a blacksmith finger and i laugh so hard
Some of them start a slot machine and you can win a free drink.

the instruction unclear, it opened portal and right now, I am in isekai
I found a vending machine in Kyoto that had frozen steaks in it. I had to take photos of it amd show then to my guide later to be sure they were what I actually thoufht they were. Yup. Steaks.
