Japanese vending machine dispenses ID photos of random strangers

“Gashapon” vending machines that dispense toys in capsules are widely available in Japan, but one new offering has become a hit on social media because it dispenses ID pictures of random strangers. The machine has attracted a surprisingly enthusiastic response from people who are willing to pay for the images. The CEO of Hino Production, the company which built the machine, said that many people who have been required to wear masks during the Covid-19 pandemic have been left with a desire to “see people’s faces fully”. The gashapon device was put into service in April 2022 in Tokyo’s Shinjuku district, and has since dispensed about 1,000 pictures.

The weirdest part is the subtitles at 00:54, when the texts are mentioning the pandemic of covid-19, it is completely different from what the guy was saying. Roughly translating what he said, it was something like, “For the 1st and 2nd gen of the gacha, all of them are the people I know, like primary school teachers, university students, and housewives. There is a wide range of age and occupations being present in the ID photos.”

This isn’t the weirdest thing in Japan. They have apps were people can rent people to pretend they are your family. It’s not just girlfriends, they have people who pretend to be parents and siblings too. This is just a small extension to that. The real problem, People in Japan are lonely. Increasing number of people are living alone and don’t have real friends, are not in a relationship. It’s not just dorky guys either. Women in Japan are not desirable after 25, so it’s harder for them to find a steady relationship as they get older. Draconian work culture still thinks women should be the one caring for children. If they want to remain employed, they feel like they can’t have children. Elderly people are also alone. Even in a city as densely populated as Tokyo, many Japanese are alone.

@@hazimherman11 japans population is declining not because people there are lonely, but because of the very stressful work system they got over there. People would rather choose to remain single than providing for an entire family when youre only getting minimum wage by doing extreme work. This is where renting people happens as so they can fulfill their crave for a family of their own, temporarily (even if its fake).

  • @veduci22

Sounds like you've never lived in Japan... Most women are getting married after 30 so "not being desirable after 25" is some weeb fantasy BS. The number of single and childless people is comparable to other developed countries (EU, USA, South Korea, Taiwan). Yes, Japanese society is pretty conservative but so are many other "non-woke" or "non-progressive" countries with traditional values. And those renting services are very niche market - vast majority of the people have an actual social life like everywhere else.

did they not think of the negative possibilities or outcomes this could bring? just imagine a stalker, no, a serial killer, any criminal or alrdy dangerous person- trying on those machines and finding their new victims through that.. aside from mentioned, as i see this thing, this could mold someone into a dangerous person that will develop an obsession over that and potentially hurt other people. rly appreciate the thought they have over this but it could just attract danger.. whoever those people are, hope they are safe and careful. even though those doesn't have any info whatsoever regarding those people and just their pictures alone, don't underestimate the minds of criminals, they could find a way if they rly are onto something. as wholesome and interesting the idea of this machine seems, its better to be aware and cautious. better to be safe than sorry. anw, just sharing my thoughts.

isnt it just a picture? like theres no adress or anything on it and then should I also stop leaving my house because someone could see my face? but then he knows where I am and could follow me directly, but he cant follow a person from that picture not knowing where they are , also facebook and any of these sites are more dangerous because the IP can be tracked or stuff.

@@Yasminh- Yes i get ur point miss/ma'am. but i stated it in my comment already as I've alrdy thought of that. it's just rly some possibility for me, let's say that they will not be directly the targets but anyone could still potentially get hurt or harassed. how could i say this? because as much as this is hard since there's just only their faces plus it's not online which is more trackable compared to that, but who knows? the criminal might like challenges and would take it in pursue of the person they are after for. also aside from that, it potentially could still become a source of obsession and that might possibly develop someone into being dangerous and might target random people, not just the ones on those machines rly. ig i watch way too many crime documentaries and these chain of thoughts are heavily influenced by that fact but i was just stating my concerns. i hope to be proven wrong tho cz we don't rly need more horrors than we are alrdy currently facing today in this world.. the way i see it, at the end of the day, u couldn't rly trust anyone. the extent that the human mind is capable of and what a person could do is just way beyond one's imagination. even the most charming people could be dangerous and is not rly who people thinks they are. in my opinion it's just, it's just creepy this concept of a stranger getting someone's picture and doing who knows what with it. thanks for replying btw, I didn't even expect anyone to rly stop and read this comment of mine and let alone share their thoughts too with me.. andddd i jwu so i hope i make sense😅
