Japanese Tourists try Singapore’s MOST Iconic Food for the first time!
Asking Japanese passer-bys to try Singapore's most iconic food, Kaya Toast. Kaya Toast is nothing special for locals, but for the Japanese, it's actually quite unique. What are their thoughts and how will they react? (spoiler: the egg dipping really shocked them). I asked a total of 20 Japanese tourists their honest opinions.

So fun for a Japanese to introduce Singapore food culture to fellow Japanese here, like to see their initial hesitation which turned into fascination 😄 do more such videos please 👍🏻
I think this is very close to our heart because the tourists are all so sporting in appreciating our local unique breakfast fare. Kudos for this segment
I like how Ghib is getting more & more Japanese who are in town (work/visit/leisure) to experience our local culture, food & everything else.. Thank you Ghib!!🙏
Ghib San thank you for introducing Singaporean food to them...well done.
I like how the Japanese tourist being so sporting and try out local fares. And are very expressive in describing the experience. Welcome to Singapore!
This is a great video! Love to see their reactions especially tourist to Singapore. Some have heard of Kaya Toast but probably not in their list of food to try. Glad Ghib managed to give them the local taste. Keep up the good work! Thank you to the friendly Japanese who participated in this video!

Nice way to introduce the local kaya toast to the tourists and cleverly tap along to promote Japan's Iced Coffee MIZUNOTOKEI.....by far is the best video clip............Great job !
Ghib san is funny and kawaii again. I didn't miss it. I saw his subtitles saying something like "are you jippun lang"? I burst out laughing immediately. Then there's more "jippun lang eat kaya toast". LoL. What caught my attention is the coffee jelly, sugoii 👍❤️. Coz I am a jelly person. One thing that puzzles me a little is why do the japanese find eating the eggs (black sauce) and all anything weird? Japanese have onsen egg which is similar also maa....🤔😁? For me, I eat the kaya bread n eggs separately as I do not want to mix the tastes up. But I love my eggs with the black sauce (must have) and lots of pepper, yummy 🤤😋.

I'm a huge fan of dipping my bread in eggs!! I used to eat it for breakfast every morning as my dad will make it for me before going to school.
I have never dipped my kaya toast in half boiled eggs. What have I missed these 34 years!? Gonna try some time this week.
Soft boil eggs goes well with kaya toast as well as cream crackers with butter or kaya. Had them since I was a kid, and now still loving it in my 40s. It never gets old.

In the 60s to 80s , Kaya toast didn’t dip inside half boiled eggs , only at the end use bread to absorb the egg then ate .

Thks for giving the world a taste of Singapore😊
Tbh as a local, i nvr liked to dip my toast in egg..i just slurp it directly from the plate, only then i eat the toast. Just see which you prefer. Bonus tip: i use the teaspoon (resting in the egg still) and use that to roughly measure half a teaspoon of soy sauce, its about right, not too salty. white pepper just put it to your liking

I agree that using the metal teaspoon is a very good way of how much soy sauce (not the plastic type cos that's much larger!) ! For those who prefer less salty, half teaspoon. Medium salty - 3/4 teaspoon. For full soy sauce goodness, just 1 teaspoon will do!

Same...no dipping whatsoever. I like my toast crispy! And there is something about the egg in dark sauce which is such a memorable taste. Not going to waste that on bread. ;)
I am with the gang putting Light and Dark Soy sauce into the egg. Dark soy is sweet, Light soy is salty.
I think the half boiled egg after adding in pepper and soy sauce would taste awesome on rice like 卵かけご飯. Fusion of Singaporean and Japanese food.
I LOVE THIS VIDEO! I feel that all the tourists that Ghib treated to the toasts, eggs and coffee were genuine with their remarks. The best of all? Ghib's MIL! 😄 Kaya toast and soft-boil eggs is life!

There is 1 last step in eating toast and eggs. We usually have a cup of coffee or tea to go with it. When we finish the eggs, we will pour some of the coffee or tea into the plate. Give it a stir and drink the coffee or tea from the plate.

I love this episode 👍
Holy shit I'm local and I don't even know about the dipping thingy! Looks like Ghib is even more local than me!
I don’t put so much black and light soya sauce, I make my eggs just a tad light brown, so 2 touches of black soya sauce and tap of light soya sauce and a few hits of pepper 😋
actually ya-kun style kaya toast has been a staple in the 60s, 70s, and somehow that style died out, until ya-kun became very commercialised and franchised, it reawakened that style of kaya toast and lots of copies spread, and thus the old favourite breakfast staple (in the old days, the toast was much thicker, not crispy) is here to stay.
omg his edit become better and better liao
mother in law reactions in Japan would be fun to watch.

You don't put in dark soy sauce, it makes it too sweet, you should put light soy sauce which is salty. But there are some people who likes it sweet than salty.
Next time May try King of the fruits Durian 😉 Should be very interesting. 😁😁
Peanut? Cheese? 😄 but the toast and eggs has to be hot and freshly made for them to taste good. I think just shiock without the pause and ah is good enough 🤣
Cute😆
Actually Japanese love raw eggs on rice & soya sauce... There are quite a few famous egg producers in Japan. In SG, there's Ise Foods Japan. It would be a great healthy & tasty combo. My personal favorite, Kaya and butter mixed toast with half boiled egg, must with black coffee.. once in a while normal milk coffee... Heaven. (Salty butter will also enhance the toast & tone down the sweetness of kaya, or just use those low sugar Kaya).

It is not the raw egg which unsettles them. It is putting sweet kaya into salty egg which confuses them. ;)
Bro, the old school way to drink your coffee after Kaya Toast is pour the coffee with milk into the plate and drink. It is like Hanoi egg coffee.
There is Ya Kun in Ginza area, saw it last year Dec 2023

I’m gonna try kaya toast when I go in two weeks. Is Toast box the place to try it?
For kaya toast, best not to do “take away”, the toast go soft and not nice, it is not a fair judgement of the food. Ojib, try work with your the Japanese embassy on their food promotion, I attended their rice, sake and ikebana sessions, pretty interesting. I hope you can make more money this way and can seriously consider staying long here in Singapore. Lots of things to explore. I told you about the turtle soup before, you have not responded!
JIPPUNG LANG HAHAHA
Why is the product only in Singapore for short period of time? Should be here long term
Such a video makes me realise that Singaporeans are a very globalised bunch of people. Because of the nature of our country, we know a lot about culture, food of other countries because our country is a melting pot of cultures and nationalities. But many people from other countries are very clueless about the world except their own culture.
I love Ghib Shows !
Actually im surprised they are scared to try when japanese eat sukiyaki meat dipped with raw egg. Hahaha. I thought they would be the least afraid cos it is similar. But it's nice to see they enjoyed the food 😉 Coffee looks good! Makes me want to try!

That is because it is slightly salty meat in plain egg, which is "normal" to them. What confuses them here, is there is sweet kaya toast going into egg with salty soy sauce. Which is why they described the outcome is so unexpected and "complex" with a unusual mix of flavours. It is somewhat like asking someone to dip sweet ice cream into salt for the first time. Sounds weird at first...until salted caramel flavours came about. ;)
There's two variety of kaya in Singapore. The more commonly seen one is the Panda Kaya (green color) The second variation is what I called the traditional type cause that's what our grandparent could've eaten back in the 60's which is the Caramel Brown colored - Hainanese Kaya Generally preferred the Hainanese Kaya cause its less sweet and made from gula melaka
Did you bring your Japanese friends to East Coast Lagoon for Sea hum, Gong Gong, Zhu-Zhu, BBQ Chicken Wings and Satay etc?
8:51 surprised Pikachu face.
As a local, I don’t like to dip the kaya toast into the eggs, that’s too much for me. The eggs though, in a plate of 2, just break 1 yolk and leave the other intact. You want the unbroken yolk to break in your mouth while slurping it down. Dash of pepper and dark/light soy sauce to taste.

There is this chain called "Ya Kun" (Kaya Toast, 1/2 boiled eggs & coffee, tea or "Yun Yang" which is coffee & tea mix). One of the more central location is 1 min from Orchard MRT is at B1 of TANGS Plaza (Marriot Hotel).
Really, I m a Singaporean, and I don't do that....
It is now a fashion to dip the kaya toast into the half boiled eggs and eat it? It is supposed to be eaten separately.
Sinkie here, & very local one. However I don't dip my toast into gooey egg b4 eating. Yucks.

Foreigners: Our country of origin food and cuisine is so difficult to find and expensive Singaporeans eating prata, kaya toast and nasi lemak: First time ?
I'm quite sure most locals don't like to eat kaya toast with the egg. Most people I see eat it separately, that's why we add pepper and soysauce to the egg. Dunking the toast into this mixture would be quite disgusting right!
