about the 米国 = America part, i believe the explanation in the video is correct but there’s an explanation which is more well known-ish here in japan which says that it’s taken from the old way to write America which is 亜米利加(literally just a combination of kanjis that reads “Amerika”), but the first kanji (亜) is already used for the spelling of Asia(亜細亜) so they went for the 2nd kanji, 米 and it turned into 米国

With Genbaneko, the worker cat meme you've referenced, you actually got his origin backwards ^^;; He was originally a meme that formed as a variation of the "phone cat" meme, and evolved into primarily depicting workplace incidents. He became so well known as the "workplace incident cat," that he ended up being co-opted as the mascot for the Japanese equivalent of OSHA, and is used to depict examples of what not to do! So rather than a mascot that became a meme, he was a meme that became a mascot!

Great video as usual. Your friend’s story reminds me of something similar that happened to me a few years ago. Got a visit from a Jehovah’s Witness couple, who wanted to discuss God and stuff. I invited them in to play Mario Party and said if they beat me, I’d attend their group meeting. We talked a lot about religion (I’m agnostic). It was a rather pleasant conversation, even if I didn’t agree with all their views. I fortunately came first and didn’t have to follow through with my gamble. They came only once again to give me chocolate and coffee to say thanks for the chat and the game. It was pretty wholesome. Also the famous 牛丼 guy makes me a little sad because I lived at Yoshinoya for like a year when I wasn’t good at cooking and I didn’t get any recognition, ha ha.

This is quite random, but yesterday, I was passing near Shakujii Station, Tokyo, and there were 2 JW folks trying to recruit new followers. I was alittle taken aback because one of them, a young woman in her early 20s was very attractive and had a great beaming smile. Often cult followers have this quirky, spacey air which alarms you, but she looked totally normal, or actually more wholesome than most of todays youths. about the 米国 = America part, i believe the explanation in the video is correct but there’s an explanation which is more well known-ish here in japan which says that it’s taken from the old way to write America which is 亜米利加(literally just a combination of kanjis that reads “Amerika”), but the first kanji (亜) is already used for the spelling of Asia(亜細亜) so they went for the 2nd kanji, 米 and it turned into 米国

Trying to learn Japanese but its really difficult with how the characters (Kanji) have multiple readings and a lot look similar and even more so with the use of certain fonts. I'm not great at self study since I'm terrible with almost anything academic so I think I'll need a teacher regardless. I have heard bad things about language schools not really caring if you fall behind and that makes me worry since I bad I am slow too. Any ideas on how I can learn better since my dream is to live in Japan one day for the rest of my life and escape western culture and enjoy the Japanese country side.

Just keep up your studying and you'll get more comfortable with the language. Yeah, the kanji can be really difficult but you don't have to treat it as a race.
