You also forgot the “E” plate for foreign cars purchased abroad and then imported into Japan

For sure, there are tons of random variants that multiple situations call for but in 9 years, I've never seen a knee plate on an actual vehicle

been living in Okinawa for 35 years, I’ve seen plenty of “E” plates-oddly enough they’re usually on sports cars like the 70’s corvette and transam

@@splendorneko2788 yeah for sure, almost none over here where there is a smaller volume of American / imported cars I'm in the Tokyo area and no one I know has ever seen one before. And all imported cars at least around us just simply have an 800 plate on it and they call it a day

Nice video, just 1 thing regarding the 分類番号: You said 00 means your plate is not customized, but it's actually 00~09 (80~82 for kei cars) the last 2 digits for customized plates (希望番号) varies on the first digit but the most common ones are: First digit 1~3: Second digit 10~98 First digit 4, 5, 8: Second digit 10~79 (83~99 for kei cars) Letters can also be in both of the last 2 digits, these are overflows for custom plates

Just noticed this comment. Yeah, again, in my area, the only prefix you'll see on a plate is "Y" No other letter. And occasionally as we mentioned you'll see a dedicated US plate. But yeah, your area is probably a significantly different volume of vehicles that they have to assign new characters for

Are black text on white background plates a thing? I've seen a couple on websites and thought they would be the same as for green text on white (private vehicles)

Almost any plate can be made illuminated now. It used to be in the 80’s and early 90’s only the “yu” ゆ plate could be illuminated-at least in Okinawa.

@@splendorneko2788 I thought ろ is reserved for standard illuminated (and illuminated can be any hiragana for 希望番号). Also, do you know if 国際ナンバー can have illuminated option?
