Japanese Knife Blacksmith Workshop
This is the Kurogane Iron Workshop where master Hayashi-san has been making knives for over 20 years in Shimanto, Kochi. He'll explain the process in his workshop an talk about Japanese swords and kinves. You can actually work with him and make your own knife over 6 days, staying in a local bed & breakfast. A super unique experience.

He darkens the room so he can “read” the fire to tell how hot it is :) So cool!

The details are what makes this so fascinating, much respect for a crafted handmade knife 🔪
My partner and I were there two years ago and we both made a knife each with help from Hayashi san. It was a great experience and we miss Kochi so much....! He takes mail orders and ship internationally if anyone want to purchase knives made by him :)

What a great story! Good info too. Yeah, for me to meet him today was a huge honor and had so much fun. I wish I’d had more time. He puts a lot of love into his work and buying a knife (or any handmade craft) from such a master makes it super special.
I have a knife from Hayashi san. I love that you can buy your knife directly from a blacksmith in Kochi :)
Hyashi-san is so funny. I like how he's like I don't care about spider, Lol. I would love to stay longer then 6 days. The knives are so interesting. If it's wasn't because I need a job. I too would love to live in a remote area, to be in nature it's a nice place.
Welp, I know what I’m adding to the itinerary when I finally get to return. It’s unfortunate his website doesn’t work properly. Only the landing page works.

If you Google it, there are loads of pages and articles on him and the workshops.
1 year in New Zealand and his English is so good!! Nice custom knives.
So enjoying this trip. There is another knife making shop in Takefu in the Fukui Prefecture. I was there well in 1979 when I was 15 years old, then in my 30's, bought a knife but the ex-husband got it in the divorce. So in October 2019 I returned to Takefu to reclaim a Takefu knife. They are so special, and when you are chopping away it is like the memories of Japan are right there with you.
Hi John remember we talked about my shinken sword bought from Tozando in Kyoto? Had it shipped here to the US, took them 9 months to make it. Japanese black smiths take so much pride in their work just as this man does making his knifes. Once Japan opens back up I’m finally ready to come and visit can’t wait!

I was thinking to go and film the journey of a sword - or knife. I loved that he started with sand from a local beach! Everything that has a story is real treasure! That sword of yours certainly does!
My mom is from Kochi and since we can't visit Japan now she's very happy with these livestreams 🥰
My grandfather was a blacksmith. This video reminds me of myself being in his workshop many years ago. It was magic!
This is a great video. It's amazing and inspiring to see blacksmiths like Hayashi-san able to continue their trade and produce such high quality knives. His english is excellent! I am from New Zealand and am very happy to hear Hayashi-san enjoyed his time here. Kiaora from Aotearoa!
This man was really happy you visited him. I love how he loved to share his knowledge with you.
His knives look so good! I want one of those slicers.
The two views setup is really good for this conversation/interview format.
Highly recommended his workshop that I took it last year :) Master Mr.Hayashi, he knows really well
Hayashi san has a great talent on his own‼️👏👏👏👏👏 He speaks very good English 👍 Thank you John for introducing him to us 😊
Glad he got to enjoy New Zealand.
This is so interesting and overall he produces pretty amazing stuff. Also his English is quite good!
Wow...what a gem....this is very refreshing to see.
such an interesting craftsman, we have to cherish their talent. still have my mothers tailoring scissors made in Japan bought in the '50's. the one rule, those scissors only used for fabric and nothing else. they are a joy to use. sharp blade best cutting tool. thank you John
I love rural Japan, I've only spent short amounts of time there, in between customer visits.
I like this guy's workshop. Simple tools, no automation. Putting this place on my list. Thanks.
Wow. This is amazing craftsmanship. He is literally making it from scratch. Rea master.
Such an amazing find! Loving this type of edited yet raw video. You can get the videos out fast, but the quality is so much better than live. Please keep it up, absolutely loving it!
Oh boy you look happier traveling and younger too. Wishing you all the best and good fortune live has for you and family. I enjoyed this streaming alot.😃👍💖☕🇺🇬🍁 Yeah I'll be in PR for some time. Covid 19 is not letting me travel like before. At least I can watch your streaming. Thank you again.
The picture-in-picture added another level of interest to the video. And this was a fascinating video, especially Hayashi’s spirit and enthusiasm.

Wow, I wish I could buy one of these special knives made by great master Hayashi san. Thank you for this very interesting video 🤩👏👏👏
Wow, he's so cool! Definitely they should make a documentary about him and show how he makes the knives.
Amazing , and you can see the pride he takes in his craft .a master in craft
Got a kitchen knife for my mom in Tokyo at a place called Tsubaya 😂 Japanese knives are pretty cool
Wow, amazing!! He is a true artisan 👏👏👏
Your English was very good Hayashi san, I enjoyed the video and I love the knife I have from you.
John, Good to share it
Afternoon! That was great John!
So beautiful. I wish I could get a knife made here. Also I don't care about spiders either, I like them. Guess I should move to Japan!!
John..this is REALLY interesting! Thank you! The kids are going to enjoy this :-) Super educational..Sharing! Ty for sharing your trip! :-)
I've always wanted a home made knife for camping, I definitely will come here if I'm in the area
Fascinating video all around and especially the technical aspect of how seamlessly fun your setup enabled.... what's your setup with the phone and the 2-way streaming? just fascinating! The Blacksmith Master was a joy on camera, what rich character!
Really fascinating
so awesome! i want i have made lots of knives but to take it from sand to blade ...once in a lifetime experience i might have to sacrifice 6 days of my trip for this! thanks for the share !

Yes, it’s pretty incredible to start from - the very beginning. The blade you make, you will know where it came from for real! This is on my list of things to do in the future too! Great teacher he is as well.
Im studying in Kochi next term, glad to see you making videos over there :)

You’re going to love it here! The reason Hayashi-san came here was to be closer to nature. I think you can feel Japan more here than in Tokyo! Connection to nature. Good luck with your studies!
Awesome video John. I love listening to craftsmen like this gentleman explaining his art of knife making 🔪 You'll have to do a follow up video of him in the process of making a knife from scratch
Interesting! thanks for sharing!

Nobuya is a really great guy and i would highly reccomend his class.
Thanks a lot for this very interesting video, John!! In the so far 8 seasons of Forged in Fire many bladesmiths mentioned to have studied in Japan. I wonder if some of them learned from Hayashi-sensei?! Anyway, I really enjoyed this!!
Unfortunately the links on the English version of his website are dead; the Japanese language version looks very comprehensive, if only I could read it!
Great story John- Thank you
otukare san!!
Ask him about how he sharpens the knife. Sharpening is an art in its own right. Jay Ponazecki and I came here :)
The knife man looks a bit like Peter Barakan :D
This was very cool now we all know what shape makes a sword. Thank u for finding him !!
Pretty good English! And so true good quality Japanese knives do last so long! Nice vid! 👍
His name looks like a heart.
hermit's cottage to get a sword in a RPG game
Man, I'm planning to go there soon... could you give me any advice for arrival from Kochi, or Kyoto?... I find the instrucctions a little confusing...
I have a strange urge to play Skyrim now!

His website is in the video description. You should be able to email, call or the best way, write a letter! That always leaves a big impact. But he teaches people so I am sure you can reserve. Just Google him.
