I want to add to the bicycle thing. Most people have their bicycles registered with their city and therefore have a yellow sticker with a barcode attached to them. One of the first things I did when I got here was go to a bike shop and get mine’s registered (I brought mine from overseas. It folds). Read too many horror stories about 外国人 who get stopped by the police who either A) don’t have that sticker or worse, B) are caught riding one that aren’t registered to them (even if that had permission from the owner). Bicycles are apparently one of the few things that typically get stolen here which is why the system exists. There are definitely areas where I wouldn’t dare leave my bicycle out but for the most part it’s safe.

The main advantage some Europeans have are the smaller distances needed to travel for some basic goods. Other than that, we do surprisingly have bakeries in our supermarkets that stock loads of different breads that are freshly baked. Although, local bakeries usually sell many more varieties including some unique breads.

@@cobrakingofeart Sure I can give a few examples from the past few months alone: - Book bans for schools. In some cases, books will be removed without review, and only re-added to libraries and classrooms after the complaint has been reviewed, and in one case (Florida) there is a whitelist in several districts. With the whitelists not having many books in them at all, libraries can in some cases be empty or have only a handful of different books in them. - Don’t say gay bills that can get teachers fired for literally just talking about the fact that gay/bi/trans people exist. - Efforts to introduce partisan school boards - banning of all gender affirming care for anyone under 18, some cases 19, sometimes even just social transition without any medication - Bills that might effectively just ban trans people from being teachers or other workers that work with children. - Forced outing bills that require schools to inform parents if they suspect that their kid is gay or trans - Bills that entirely define trans people out of the law, making all definitions of gender explicitly restated to “gender assigned at birth”, which effectively bans getting ID/birth certificate/etc that matches your gender identity if you are trans, no matter your age - Bills that can get teachers punished for _not_ misgendering trans kids - Bills that ban trans people from accessing the correct bathroom, even post-op - Bills that ban insurance companies from being able to provide health insurance in states because they cover gender affirming care in other states (even if only for adults) - Bills that effectively ban or heavily restrict the ability to boycott companies (yes, this makes no sense with the previous one, but both are types of bills that have been pushed in various republican states in the past few months) - In one particularly extreme bill that has yet to face reading and hopefully will not pass, the Florida legislature also currently has a bill rolling that would simply ban the democratic party from participating in their elections entirely. - Another very troubling Florida bill that has passed committee is one that would effectively force journalists to give any confidential/anonymous information to courts if sued for defamation over reporting done based on that information.

I’ve tossed out more moldy bread than I’d like to admit… But to be fair I think the same can be said for anyone who visits a country for a bit and departs soon after with a few experiences to take with them. I’ve been living in Tokyo for almost 7 months now and the amount of common things I’ve heard about Japan in general (both some positives and negatives) before coming here have been subverted enough times that I can’t keep count of anymore. And of course a number of things depend on where you are in the country (for instance, I’d rather interact with people in Kyoto than Tokyo any day lol I miss that aspect of Kyoto). I relate more to these Trash Taste clips over any other videos on Japan.
