I'm just interrupting the Japan series with a fun project with Mazda about Japanese crafts. Driving from London to Paris, I was invited to make a commercial video for the @MazdaEurope channel about Kintsugi; the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with gold.
Having just landed back in the UK less than 12 hours before, we set off to France via the Eurotunnel, filming in various locations with the car, before meeting with Nicolas Pinon to learn about Kintsugi.
Following on from the vibe of Made in Japan, a previous film we made about handcrafts in Japan, this project made perfect sense to work on and I'm keen to continue to do more!

How to make an advert not seem like an advert. Enjoyed both videos. The Kintsugi section in the final video was nice, to hear from the craftsman himself. But the BTS was my favourite.

Cheers Gavin! Honestly, in terms of client work, this was an easy match that just made so much sense and fit together really well. I literally had no amends other than removing a shot of someone who didn’t want to be on camera haha!
The car "crafted in Japan' goes very well with your enthusiasm for Japan and Japanese products, such as your cameras or your watch.

Cheers! The whole brief felt like a perfect match and easy opportunity to say yes to.
Watching the final product (video) actually had me in awe, I'd never realised how long and and involved the kintsugi process was, the dedication and craftsmanship is just amazing. great pair of videos as always Joe, ありがとう!
Just watched the video Joe, well done! The interview with the craftsman was very engaging, well paced and beautifully shot.

I loved the finished work, it was delightful! And joining you in this behind the scenes was lovely, too! I wish more sponsored videos here in KZread were as great as this!

Brilliant.
I'm so happy for you. I'm sure there are challenges, but it seems like an amazing life. And Europe is just beautiful!
Amazing video!
How insightful to see the process you go through on a project like this one. Thoroughly enjoyed this Joe! Kampai 🍻

Cheers Paul! Very quick turnaround on this from arriving back in London just moments before, but looking forward to doing more like this in the future!
Great video Joe ! Am on our 8th Mazda, 4 of which were Mazda 3 GTs, 2 were the same colour as yours. Transmissions were automatics though with the GT package. Our last 2 were all wheel drive which is useful in Canadian winters.
Great video
Awesome. You absolutely nailed it.

Unfortunately not! Definitely stocked up on a lot of French wine to enjoy at home though!
Hey Joe, Weird question, but can you tell me the model of your Seiko watch? I love it! Please do tell!
Your vlogs about Japanese Craft series are always a delight to watch, Joe. The final film in the Mazda Europe channel is also absolutely beautiful and poetic. Hope you and Elly will get more chances to do this in the future. Also, ear-deafening vehicle mufflers should be banned >_
What camera/lens did you use at 14:53. It does look absolutely massive. and the red ring is some sort of ND/Pol filter?
Awesome video! The final film turned out great! Ironically, I was in the market for a new vehicle last fall as it was time to retire my 2012 Mazda 3, and this vehicle was the EXACT one I was considering. Ended up going with an Acura Integra, but I do love Mazdas. Great work, Joe and Elly!

Wife and I drove through the south of France. But we did not brave the cities. Enjoyed living vicariously.

Driving around France seemed to be fairly easy for the most part. Definitely some tricky aspects in Paris, but I think it was the added stress of filming it and being sat on the wrong side of the car that made it tricky.

@@joeallam back in 2016, when we were in France, google maps was not really helpful in the small, winding streets in cities like Arles. We only found our way to hotels by the kindness of strangers. We knew just a tiny bit of French and the locals in the south knew, in comparison, just a bit more English. Fun memories! Paris, we just walked and rode the subway... sigh... One day, with the little ones in tow, we shall be back... :P
Clips from here could have also easily passed as the actual/secondary advertisement, so good! Love the behind the scenes, thank you for bringing us!
Always fun driving around Paris in a right-hand-drive car. Or, indeed, any car 🙈 Last time I drove over there I thought I'd be clever and flick the headlight angle inside the lights rather than stick those annoying stickers on. Felt really smart, right up until I dropped one of the retaining bolts inside the engine and it didn't come out the bottom. The RAC were amused. That headrest car mount is neat - have you got a link for it? Never seen one of those before 🤔
@joeallam

Haha, oh wow that sounds stressful with the lights. That was actually my first question to Mazda about driving in France and they said modern cars don’t need to worry anywhere near as much as older cars used to. Seems there’s more tech involved than just MPH to KMH… The headrest mount can be found here by the way allam.co/headrest-mount
