    It’s wild that one is considered underweight and one considered herself overweight, they look so similar in size, the “perfect weight” in Japan must be such a narrow range

    Exactly. They look similar. And one says she's too thin and the other that she's overweight.

    Because skinnyfat is more noticed in Asia. The one covering up more may look same size but you can tell based on things like double chin when talking etc. No hate I'm fatter than both of them just stating the beauty standard.

    @@RR-us1lt She doesn't have a double chin. If someone puts his chin down like this, in case of every person, even being only skin and bones, it would like having a "double chin". And the only think she has "over" is probably her cloths being oversized, not she being overweight.

    I think some people really need to know the difference between clinically underweight , average and overweight. Most people fall in the average range ... but many people also think that you're either over or underweight, no room for I between like average. I've always been average in all my life but as a kid I leaned more underweight and nowadays I lean more overweight , less than 5kg of extra fat... but really telling chubby yet still average or not medically overweight people they're fat is really not neccesery and can be counterproductive , it's best if they're told to loose weight when officially overweight just by their doctor or medical professional with lots of tact. It can end up pretty nasty in severe body image problems like anorexia or extremely disordered eating( so uts best to not tell them they're far uf they really officially aren't and if they are doing so very carefully) Also beauty standards are very different in most areas in the west compared to east asia.

    I think more people should undervalue themselves like the Japanese. Then we can think and work on what truly matters. Western* women think they're all gods gift to earth and Japanese women think they're all commodities and replaceable. The truth is both of these statements are true. But there isn't a middle ground of these thoughts, we're either arrogant and vain or miserable and pathetically insecure about any little flaw.

Number of body dysmorphia is unverifiable and honestly I don't really want to address it. Go on - you'll find it's hard to make somewhat provable theories. Let me pitch one for US having a crisis opposed to Japan. I can't find apples-apples comparison, but it appears that United States mental health service use keeps increasing to reach crazy prevalence rates. It's a global trend, but you'd think that would reverse at some point as we become content with life, but years pass and it keeps getting worse.

    @@tteqhuthey’re right tho, japan is going through a mental health crisis rn. we cannot look at it in comparison to the US and say “well since the US has similar stats, japan clearly isn’t facing a mental health crisis.” it is possible that both countries are, and/or it can still be a crisis for japan specifically because you have to look at that country for what it is. teen suicides and bullying have been getting progressively worse there. japan also has a culture that prioritizes work heavily, so the work-life balance there is much worse than other countries. this goes for the students there as well. for women specifically, the sexual harassment there has gotten so bad that all japanese phones automatically make a “click” sound when a photo is taken, because of the persistent upskirting problem there. they’ve also had to create many female-only trains and trams just so they can feel safe. that’s a bit of a different issue but not feeling safe around everyday people (japanese men) can contribute to a declining mental health. and as we’ve seen in this video, the beauty standards there (and most of asia tbh) are pretty brutal, which makes things even worse. these are just some examples off the top of my head. as for the hikikomori thing…they are not all autistic. their lifestyles can also be caused by crippling depression or anxiety, for example. a developmental delay can play a part in it for sure but mental illness is a huge factor of that. there is much more to it.

    Its so jarring because in the west guys are crazy about asian women but the idea of attractiveness is so different from theirs (example i heard lucey liu wouldn't have made it over there because she wouldn't fit the face ideal yet she is stunning in north America and Europe)

    I dunno, sorry to be pedantic but mixing cultures here complicates things. Going by Chinese standards, as Malaysian born actress, Michelle Yeoh made it in Hong Kong cinema and her features aren't typical Chinese cute. Granted, that's perhaps the exception rather than the rule. David E Kelly also wrote the Ling Woo part specifically for Lucy Liu so that helps. Pew has released a paper, "Trends and patterns in intermarriage," that notes interracial marriage has increased from 8% - 18% for couples in their 30's from 1980's-2015 in the US. I don't if that's crazy but is an increase in mixed marriages.

    @@LionHrodgariNot being visibly overweight (nevermind obese) is one of the most significant and most objective criteria that constitute as to which features will be seen as attractive by the majority of people. East Asians are lightyears ahead of the US in particular, but also the west in general in terms of their national obesity rate, though that's unfortunately changing in many regions due to fast food & soft drinks (it's in Southeast Asia, but Thailand is an example of this).

  • @tteqhu

    @tteqhu

    @@emilyk1109 It's not fast-food and drinks, just culture. I don't know when the new "mental health" anti-trauma culture where you can't tell people the simple truth will be challenged. I recently saw a comment in which someone complained that doctors told him to lose weight (as obese person) and avoid foods that made him have certain symptoms. He was absolutely annoyed to hear the obvious. And he didn't listen until he got to doctor that told him to avoid pizza as he may have GERD which may have dangerous outcomes. Now I kid you not, losing weight can treat or significantly lower GERD symptoms. Most ailments are made worse with overweightness/obesity.

    Ive really struggled with my image and I'm constantly to trying to accept how i look especially my face but i can never want do plastic surgery because when i think of the parts of my face that i would change i realise that id probably never truly be satisfied, because beauty is subjective, what i perceive as a beautiful face might change every once in a while idk if that makes sense, but there's a fear that i might change something and then a while later realize that i probably should have just stayed with what i had
