    When I was living in Japan, I’ve been told by many Japanese friends that Tokyo is the worst place in Japan for them. When I asked why, they said the stress and quality of life is the worst. Also they said Tokyo could be a very materialistic place compared with many other parts of Japan. I guess if we interview people in Los Angeles compared with interviewing people from Hawaii or Pennsylvania, the answers might vary greatly.

    I'm Japanese, but please don't take the opinions in this interview as general... This interview is taking place in a nighttime entertainment district. This may sound discriminatory and rude, but I personally feel that many of the people who come to such places are vulgar. At least no one I've ever met would approve of cheating! If a friend says it's OK to cheat, I question their sanity. Of course, there may be some people who are okay with cheating, but it's probably not the norm. I'm very shocked. Please don't apply this to all Japanese people. Honest people don't cheat. Even if they did, it wouldn't be something they would say so brazenly. This is an act that I deeply regret and am ashamed of.

    Translating Fuzoku(風俗) as prostitution is kinda wild. You gotta explain what kind of Fuzoku they are referring to. Like this girl at 3:00 is depicting the non-sexual situation, like eating & drinking with women at a nightclub/bar sort of situation. According to your definition, Hooters and strip clubs would also be prostitution. Also I think you should interview women in other places under the sun too. I'm a Japanese women myself and these women who are roaming around in this part of Tokyo at night are a different kind of breed imo. It would be biased to, for instance, catch a bunch of young people roaming around Las Vegas, interview them, and conclude that Americans are unchaste and slovenly, wouldn't it😅

    Welcome to Westernization, aka killing the Japanese language and culture on purpose. Fuuzoku only means customs, like in a certain area of the country and so. But thanks to the foreign owners of Japan (Japan was sold to foreigners by "Meiji"), the language has been "reformed" (dumbed down and perverted) three times in huge ways... And one of the goals was to make good meaning words bad (八方美人), bad words good (凄い), attach meanings to words that have never been there (付き合う・彼氏彼女)etc. That is step 1 of destroying a nation - destroying their language.

    As a Japanese man, it is very bizarre to me lol... My wife would cut my jewels off if I went to a brothel, whether emotional attachments were involved or not. That being said, when I was in Tokyo in the early 2000s, I used to work as a host to help pay for college, and I remember more and more frequent were married women showing up for a "fun time" ... after being dropped off by their husband who went his own separate way to a next-door brothel. I was very confused by it, but I never said anything. After all, they were clearly opened with the arrangements. I also remember a few years ago, I was staying at a friend's home in Tokyo for a night. I accidentally overheard he and his wife talking. She handed him allowance money and said, "I'm tired. Go find a prostitute. I'm going to bed." as if it were a completely normal thing. Wow... Overall, however, I still really don't think this is the norm. I've talked with quite a bit of people on this subject when I went to go visit my hometown in Ehime. They are people who I know closely, who are willing to give me honest answers. Whether man or woman, every single person I spoke with do not agree with the statements made in this video and in fact really hate how people in Tokyo and Kyoto view things this way. Thus, it is likely that majority of Japanese people in smaller cities or rural regions do not share the sentiments in this video.

    To explain a bit: the term used in the video for 'cheating' is '浮気' in Japanese. 浮気 means 'in love with another one', that's why some of them think prostitution is not 浮気 as it does not include emotional feeling to the prostitute. There is another term in Japanese that has similar meaning, which is '不倫'. 不倫 means 'having sex with another one', but Takashii did not use this word because 不倫 is a term that is only used on people who are married (which most of the interviewees are obviously unmarried). Therefore, there is no such exact word that can perfectly match the term 'cheating' in Japanese as in English.

    It's interesting to see how, in Japan, men and women seem to separate emotion and sex when it comes to relationships. In most other countries, the physical aspect of a relationship is what takes it from casual to serious, at least in theory. I would have liked it if Takashii had asked them if, once married to someone, their opinion of visiting a brothel changes, or if they still think it's ok, as long as their spouse lets them know.

  • @honkhonk6359

    @honkhonk6359

    I think it’s been like this for most of history in fact. Romance and romantic love are Western cultural constructs drawing on traditions of chivalric romance in the Middle Ages which were then heavily propagated amongst the emerging middle classes during industrialization. People only started getting into relationships solely out of love during the Victorian era it seems, when productivity afforded greater levels of wealth and leisure to do so. Beforehand the primary motive was survival and the bearing of many children to compensate for a high mortality rate. Other cultures have industrialized but in this regard the West is still ahead of the curve. Arranged marriages are still commonplace in India for instance, and it is customary for wealthy Chinese men to take mistresses.

    I’d like Takeshii to have asked about brothels after marriage and in a few more detailed scenarios that I’ve heard of. One is during pregnancy… as it seems pretty culturally common in Japan for couples to not have sex during pregnancy… how do women feel about their husbands going to brothels then? What do women think about brothels in the scenario where they are no longer interested in sex at all (after children, after menopause or even just low sex drive from when young), but their partner is still interested in regularly having sex?

Going to a brothel is an actual CHOICE you can easily avoid Pretty sure this mentality men & women have in Japan also shames men, acting as if they don't have any more brain cells than their penis o.o like bruh, any gender can avoid it, just be in a communicated open relationship if you want yknow (Also treating prostitutes as if they're objects to be paid for and not actual people is so gross ugh)

    The thing i think people are not understanding from this video is that culturally it seems that Japanese have a clear divide between love and sex. Which there is a distinction between love and lust. The difference between them and the west is that they accept this divide where the west doesn't. Them having brothels that mainly cater to lust probably has saved many more relationships than it has ruined. For example men will have higher sex drives younger where their partner might not want to do it 24/7, and the same goes for older women when their sex drive increases.

One of them admitted that while she said it was "not cheating" she still didn't like it and didn't want to admit it because of a fear of seeming clingy = fear of being ditched. I think overall the dating culture in the big cities is very toxic for everyone and causes a lot of hurt on both parties, but Japan being Japan you don't really talk about negative feelings and try to blame yourself for being emotional about it in the first place.

    Why is it funny? That's most likely the way the relationship you're in started to begin with... And usually asking somebody out for dinner is the way you start a relationship with a girl you're interested in. And the girl accepting a dinner is most likely interested in you. A prostitute is a professional, who will give you pleasure for a restricted timespan and for money. It's furthermore unlikely that the "bond" with the prostitute is mutual (cause you're probably her 10th custumer that day).

    @@yume7335 While it was not said in this video, I've seen quite a lot of cases where even going to get lunch or dinner with your coworkers that happen to be female will count as cheating according to some girls. At least where I'm from having dinner with the other sex is very normal and does not mean you like the person, of course depending on the context. Also while the girl prostitute might not form an emotional bond the guy might. This possibility is even stronger if you are a regular for a certain prostitute. It's not even about the fact that the might form the bond, but that his girlfriend might even have the thought that it might happen. How does the girlfriend know if he's only seeing a certain prostitute everytime or a different one? Also, saying "I find it funny" does not always mean that you literally find it funny. It is also used to mean that you see something as being hypocrisy.

    I think there is a lot of nuance and deeper issues here than what we are able to see in these videos. It sounds like emotional cheating is harder to accept than sexual (which in some ways makes sense, but also depends on how you view sex). It would be interesting to hear about married couples (especially with motherhood). Also would be interesting to hear from gays/lesbians. It's cheating if he hides it, it's okay if he pays someone...sounds to me like they're saying it's okay as long as he comes back to me. We also need to be careful about making general assumptions. While there may be a "cheating culture" in Japan, it doesn't mean all Japanese do it, nor is cheating unique to Japan.

    The problem is that women assume that men think and feel like they do, which they don't. Men have a much higher ability to engage sexually with different women without becoming emotionally involved, this has to do with brain chemicals such as Oxytocin and Vasopressin

  • @larion2336

    It's fascinating how different their culture is. It's really such an alien outlook to me (Australian), everyone here would regard visiting a brothel as cheating. It seems Japanese people put less emphasis on physical cheating and more on emotional. People in the west are more possessive in general, I wonder if that means they have better relationships, or worse. However I'd be curious to see these same questions asked of the men, as I always find men and women have very different outlooks on issues like this. Particularly they are always eager to think badly of the other as a group.

  • @johnhawke1475
    @johnhawke14753 ай бұрын

    Well-put questions approached the individuals, And I agreed with most of their responses. As long as you are not involved in your intricate feelings with a girl, it doesn't really count as cheating. It also depends on how a person manages their relationships. but, to me, communication and understanding each other needs and wants are the keys to running the relationship with your spouse. Of course, it's easier said than done, it takes a lifetime to reach a well-being mentality of realization (including myself), yet not meant for everyone. However, the first step is to get to know ourselves... I think Japan is an interesting place to explore from different perspectives.

    The girls seem pretty open to the idea of their boyfriends having a physical relationship with other women as long as it doesn't involve an emotional relationship, as well. And they admit that they don't like this, but that they don't want to be seen as clingy. No mention about the risks of Mr. Boyfriend bringing home an STD, developing an emotional relationship with a girl he's cheating with, or of him getting the other girl pregnant. Also, the focus is solely on the actions of the guy -- while the girls are seemingly O.K. with the guys cutting loose, does that men that guys can expect their girls to also be as casual with their extra-curricular activities, too?

    Things like STDs and pregnancy wouldn't really be a thing at a brothel because the girls there would have to be tested constantly and you'd have to use a condom. Their job is to have sex and if it is a legal establishment there would be rules and procedures for these kinds of things. That's part of why I think they'd be okay with their men going to brothels. It is probably seen as safer overall than going to some random woman. Other things you have to worry about less is getting into fights with the brothel girl since their boyfriend should be seen as just a client and the boyfriend would always have access as long as he has money. If he becomes upset that particular girl isn't there, then it becomes more emotional cheating which all of them pretty consistently say they are not for.

    I'd be curious to know if/how much other cultural norms affect each other. In the case of the first girl, it sounds like another cultural norm there is influencing her decision making; the "honne/tatemae" concept. She could have just told the guy she's not into him, sparing them both. Instead, choosing to live the lie and let bad feelings and behaviours fester. Choosing not to tell the truth has only made him lonely and likely hurt, and her, a cheater. It's such a toxic mentality. I feel like all these issues, (the cheating being ok if "you don't love them", affection not being publicly acceptable, work culture and honne/tatemae) all contribute to and exacerbate each other. Clearly people are craving physical affection, but it almost seems like you're not supposed to get it from someone you're close with, because then you would have to go through the awkward talk of telling your partner your true feelings and risk upsetting them, and you don't want to rock the boat (collectivism mentality+honne/tatemae). This definitely doesn't help the declining birthrates.

I have seen an arrangement where the woman wants the experience of preparing a home meal for a man and lying in bed next to him. It need not be sexual or emotional, just fantasy. And then so many say they would damage families and relationships over maybe a $700 spend that allows for a $150k career.

Rules like these often have the opposite effect, as you see these things go without saying, a relationship is by default 'closed' infact it is the point of announcing you're in one and conversations such as these communicate nothing but your fears and insecurities or perhaps lack of social skill/emotional intelligence, rendering the conversation completely pointless. You must recognize if your partner is unsatisfied with you and for what reason, then make your decision to try to change something or move on(usually best to move on, a relationship based on sex is what brothels are for.

I am against prostitution but I can see the distinction between love and physical attraction that some of these Japanese girls are doing. However, I felt that most of them are ok with men going to brothel because "it has always been like that" or because "men will cheat anyway so it is ok" not because they have a mutual consensus with their partner.
