@@HanginInSFNah Chinese tourists are notoriously awful. The Thai for example love tourists and are not xenophobic but even they are fed up with the Chinese. The Chinese tourists are entitled, spit/piss/sht in public spaces, leave garbage everywhere, step in places they’re not supposed to, and are obnoxiously loud in their flocks. It’s due to the CCP and their Great Leap “Forward” which eliminated the established social contract between man and society - ironically despite being in a communist nation, they live almost exclusively for themselves and will readily crap on their neighbor’s lawn if its convenient for them.

I would like to also share my experience in Kawaguchiko as a tourist few months ago. I am by no means an obnoxious tourist and have always been respectful to my surroundings. I need to say, being unfamiliar with the place, and being weighed down by limited time of being there, plus the crowd, my (and my travel partner's) senses were rather overwhelmed as we alighted our transport and started exploring the area. While we acknowledged we may have accidentally flouted one or 2 rules. i.e. not being observant of a small pedestrian traffic light when crossing the very small street when there were no vehicles passing through that time, we could not shake the uneasiness of how it felt by being screamed at rudely by a local traffic officer. We understand the frustration that he has, having the need to deal with unruly tourists for quite some time. But it kind of spoils the feeling of being at such a beautiful place. Still, it was an overall great experience there, a beautiful unforgettable place, and we hope the situation gets better for residents living there and tourists alike in the not too distant future.

These tourists will just find another view spot and mess with another area so all this ended up doing is push the problem somewhere else. They should put a more permanent solution, maybe a high fee for breaking laws?

They gotta do what they gotta do, and at this rate more and more places are going to be shut off from tourists. I'm not sure people understand the extent of the overtourism problem in Japan right now. I've been there multiple times, but last time it was complete madness anywhere with the slightest bit of tourist appeal, and that was during the off-season. And tourists on bad behavior are very un-acceptable to the Japanese, as they are a collectivist society where following the rules is a very basic and ingrained principle.

I would like to share my perspective as an average Japanese person. As you know, Japanese people generally follow rules, are kind to tourists, and are patient. However, recently there have been frequent, unacceptable rule violations. As a result, many ordinary Japanese people, who are not involved in the tourism industry, have begun to feel resentment towards tourists. This is because the negative impact on their daily lives outweighs the benefits gained from tourism.

I hope Japan doesn’t become like Iceland, the mad tourism rush there (before Covid) ruined many beautiful sightseeing spots with disrespectful tourists treading all over the place, destroying nature, setting up tents in play schools because they were too stingy to pay for hotels… there was talk about setting up a special fee for all tourists entering the country but the tourism industry was so influential that they had the power to veto that decision. The tourism industry in Iceland is so greedy that they’re willing to sell out their country.

  • @gotakazawa408

@@sykurflos Thank you for sharing your thoughts. In Japan, the tourism industry doesn't wield enough influence to "sell out" the country, but I do have concerns from a different perspective. My worry stems from the rapid increase in individuals not adhering to rules, potentially leading to a rise in incidents such as traffic accidents or train mishaps. Moreover, even in the absence of accidents, implementing preventative measures requires budget allocation, which is funded by taxes paid by Japanese citizens. I believe one potential solution could be to raise the current entry tax, which is currently around 4 US dollars (collected from tourists, excluding international students and those traveling for business purposes). I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts on this matter, if you'd like to share.

The woman from Australia has no clue why she is there either. The ONLY reason they are all there is to get a picture of the convenience store, its blue sign, and Mt Fuji behind it. It has no meaning except for the people that want to take the EXACT same photo they saw on social media without even knowing why people flock to that spot in the first place. Right next to it is a convenience store with a different color sign, the same view of Mt Fuji, with no people. This isn’t a bad foreigner issue - this is a mindless social media issue.

I don't know if it's my imagination, but I see many foreigners in Japan who do this kind of annoying behavior... I don't think they do it as much in other Asian countries like China, Korea, or Thailand.

That Aussie lady, I see her point of view. She's sharing her skepticism of the barrier even working. I don't think she being smug or arrogant about the issue. She's giving her honest point of view of how other daredevil, rude, arrogant tourist would find to get a shot. Hopefully, she herself isn't one of those.

I'm sure there are many more spots to take pics of Mount Fuji.
