Japan's Hidden (and weird) Paradise | Amakusa, JP
This time I traveled all the way to the mysterious island of Amakusa, to look at a rock and learn about the Hidden Christians in Japan, but the epiphany I had was more that of ice cream than faith.

There's a famous 'Nagoro Scarecrow Village' that was all but abandoned due to the aging population and children moving away so one woman brought the village back to life with scarecrow dolls. I think this roadside attraction is inspired by that since even the doll designs look similar in construction.
The voice switch to that monotone creepy Chills guy was soo accurate you need an award 😂

I honestly don’t know how these full length videos don’t get more views, this is entertaining but also educational in a way that for some reason reminds me of my childhood? idk

This makes me miss seeing mundane sights in rural japan. I remember spring times visiting family in hakatajima (the ramen is ace, the salt ice cream is major yums and the whole island smells like orange and lavender). I fervently wish you would do more of these long-form videos. Thanks for such a gem.
I wish more people did videos like this talking about real history and also keeping it light so you're not depressed after😂
Gaming humor, Chills impressions, and great travel. You’ve earned yourself another subscriber. 👍

the scarecrows’ faces are so detailed!!! i’m fascinated, whoever made them put so much love into making them. they do lean a little into the uncanny valley, but overall i’m softened by the labor of love. their little town, frozen in time.
Love your longer videos. Your insight, personality, and editing are even more impressive in longform content! Thank you!
i love everything about the way you present yourself. the cinematography, script and editing is so well done
Seeing a video longer than 60 seconds from JapanEat is not something I expected but I definitely appreciate it
I moved to Japan this year and I live in a rural town. I was exploring the mountainous hinterland of the otherwise dense coastal town and I stumbled on a sign that said ‘Maria, goddess of light’ and new that it would either take me to Kan’on Maria statue or I would be abducted by some syncretic cult. It turns out it was a Kan’on Maria statue, which surprised me because I always thought that they were limited to Kyushu but I guess I am not that far away and there were hidden Christians all throughout Japan
If the history behind the scarecrow village is true, then it is very sad. I grew up in a small town and even to these days, many of my relatives are still in our village.

From what I researched, it was made by a singular lady because of the depopulation of the village and wanted to make it seem full of life like it used to be. There are approximately only 30 people in the village and scarecrows are about 10 to 1. It's a bittersweet story.

Stumbled across you because of your shorts but can I just say I LOVEEEEEEE your long form content. Your calm voice, historical facts mixed with jokes, absolute banger!!! I hope if it works out you're able to make more long form content, it's a treat!
i googled the scarecrow thing cause i was so curious. apparently amakusa holds an annual spring scarecrow festival which i think is really cute. i also learned that there’s another scarecrow village in nagoro in the tokushina prefecture
It flew by so fast and was so funny yet informative. Seems like you can make anything entertaining and still teach us things, even if the one of only things we catch are the obscure references dotted throughout the videos
It’s been 6 months since the previous legit video. Quite refreshing to see JE do this tbh.😌🇯🇵🍜
Your content rocks, I first discovered you through your shorts, but this entire video was so fun to watch. As others said, your witty pop culture references as well as your own original comments really makes this an awesome travel video!
This was the first long-form video of your's I've seen and I love that you keep your usual naration and editing style in both! You're definitely the type of person I'd love to just kick-back and chill with! -Keep doing your thing, JE! I'll definitely keep watching!

4:04 Okay, this one hit me right in the nostalgia. Critical hit. You got me.
11:37 had me wheezing 😂 thank you for this video! To more longform content in the future pls!
For the Anime Fans out there, Amakusa was featured in the 3rd Arc of the Ruroni Kenshin TV show back from 1996. The actual Jinchu arc wasnt written yet so they did filler story and it featured Amakusa Shogo (a supposed alternate inheritor of Kenshin's sword style) and the hidden Christians he protected which was based on this island and its inhabitants.

Rurouni Kenshin/ Samurai X😅 was my first Manga I've read as a teenager. As a dog person, i decided that, whenever i got a dog, i will call him the name of kenshins son, Kenji. Now, with 37, i have a 4year old dog called Kenji😂 I'm a german, so most of the people are confused about his name😅
Loved the chill vibes interspersed with your usual jokes and references. More long-form videos, you say? I'm in. Do it, dude! And yeah -- congratz on hitting 1 Million!
I NEED more full length videos. I love your style. You're right up there with AIJ honestly
Your longer form videos are so good! Your narrating style meshes so well with the calmer vibe of these roadtrip like vids.
Hey, just wanted to say thanks for the longer form video, it was really enjoyable! I love that you're exploring more of this style of content, I think your humor really shines when you don't have to cram jokes into a strict time limit like with shorts. I'm still going to watch your shorts anyway, but hope that we see more of your trips or just fun food experiences and stuff in longer form in the future.
Really love this! Your commentary is fun and the narration is relaxing. If u do more long videos, i would love to see more moments of silence with light background audio! The locations are really beautiful i’d love to look at them for just a little longer The scarecrow village bit was fun but also a nice opportunity to just admire what a weird and interesting place it was
Looks like in addition to being a foodie you're also a bit of a history buff? That's cool! I'd be way down for more videos or shoets about Japanese History!
I love your approach on a food tour. It's like a nice Anthony Bourdain homage to the real-life feeling to really put us in preparation of what a simple traveler would experience.
I love your long-form videos! This one was especially informative. I like how introspective your videos are, they make me feel immersed in the experience of the food, travel, etc. Hope you're doing well 😊
I LOVE these longer tour videos. Please keep making them
Fun and breezy narration while also being informative. Love it!
Your videos are unironically so nice, there’s something about them that tickles every part of my brain. Keep up the amazing work man
I love your humour so much man, thank you for your videos. I'm amazed and delighted by them, truly!
I've loved your TikToks and Shorts for so long, please make more longer videos, I loved this one!
really looking forward to the long form content, you are literally the only shorts I watch and you always bait me into clicking on your shorts which leads to me scrolling for like 30 min every time
I love your long form content, I can't get enough of it!! No pressure to post it more often tho, good things take time :)
I’ve watched a lot of videos (wow big surprise from a KZread viewer) but your content has some of the best and most satisfying video direction I’ve seen on the platform and humor that doesn’t overstay its welcome. I look forward to more of your long form videos in the future no matter how long lol
Woohoo longer format content!! Love it, thank you for the upload
Please keep making these, I loved this so much!
Excited to see more video content, the shorts already got me hooked but this was a nice change to watch
I love your narration style. It's very engaging, because while you give trivia about whatever food you're eating or location you're visiting you pepper it with video game references. As a video game nut myself I found myself hard pressed to catch every reference. I want to say your monologue was an Ocean Hunter one but I might be wrong. Still, superb video, extremely relaxing, and I enjoyed eating my lunch while watchhing it. Kudos!
Love the longform videos. Also very much appreciate you putting subtitles on here!
I was just watching your full length videos yesterday night to help me calm down before bed, your commentary is so casual and calming :] happy to get another video that I can binge at 11:50 pm

I can’t wait to see more from you! I know that long form content is so much more work for you, so I know I can’t expect you to hop on trains and planes all the time, but personally I would also love to see you roaming around places that are more easy for you to explore too, like you also do with your short contents, I wouldn’t be mad at all. Overall, I just love so much what you do, you’re one of the few creators that posts about food that I really enjoy and watch, and everything you’ll be willing to share with us it’s gonna be a huge pleasure to watch.
This is the first long form video of yours I've seen and I like it very much. Thank you.

Yeahhh a long video! Grateful for you
Enjoyed the unexpected history lesson. If you ever decide to go island hopping again, try the Goto island chain, especially Fukue, it's a bit further north-west from Amakusa. They have a crazy amount of christian churches there as well. Most of them built by the Portuguese.
Finally ! Looking forward to next one 👍🏻
This was so fun! Beautiful videos, hilarious commentary. And I like that there wasnt music
love your long form content keep it up!
A long Japaneats video? What a blessing
I'm glad I checked your channel instead of just watching your Shorts. 😅 Love your narrations! 💖
