I saw these in the wild. I held a glossy one first and I was like this is nice but when I picked up the one with the sandpaper texture I fell in love with it and immediately bought it! Now I want the tea pot too!

Thanks a lot! I'm happy to hear that you liked it. Yes, it's no high-tech technology review, but I think it has a lot of merits.

They might be meticulously slip-cast, meticulously crafted with CAD design precision, and expertly glazed through spraying techniques rather than brushing. Drawing inspiration from centuries of traditional shapes, they exude a timeless elegance that I adore. I really like them. The glaze and clay body could be high fire (cone 7 onwards) because that is what most Japanese ceramics are fired at (unlike low fire Heath).

I just bought the teapot and was thinking that I should return but now you have convinced me to keep it !

I've seen Japanese clay pots used for making rice. It's basically a pot inside of a pot. I have had so so bad luck with making rice besides using a pressure cooker, so I always wanted to try. This video is so cool with the Hasami story!! And it made me thought of those cool clay pots.

I was debating getting the coffee pot and dripper with mugs in these colors. This video was great; I ordered them today.

Glad to hear that! I considered the dripper as well, That's pretty high on my list to get, though I often drink a few more than one cup of coffee.

Thanks for this detailed review. I’m still curious if the unfinished rim on the glazed cups makes for an unpleasant mouth feel, like nails on a chalkboard. Thoughts?

Glad it was helpful! The unfinished one is more rough, the black one is smoother. I don't often gnaw at my coffee mugs, so it has never been an issue.

Hey Jarren. You didn't say much about the tea/coffee pot (other than it doesn't fit the tray very well). Is it any good for making tea or coffee? Thanks for the video!

You're right. I didn't focus on the teapot as much as I should have. It is fantastic. The metal basket fills the entire pot, so the tea is essentially free-floating in water the whole time. As you pour it is filtered at the spout. Though I tend to remove the entire basket after I've completed steeping to prevent the tea from becoming bitter.

@@JarrenRocks Really good to know, thanks. I think you might have convinced me on buying a few pieces! Have you tried coffee in the pot yet - basically doing the same, letting it brew for some minutes then removing the basket? To my mind that should work really well.

@@ppentland I haven't brewed coffee in the basket, though a larger grind size would likely work well for something like that. Essentially a French Press-like experience. Should work pretty well yes!

How do you clean the natural Hasami mug?

I use a little bit of soap and a soft sponge, then towel/air dry. It's fairly resilient, but I tend to avoid dishwashing any sensitive products.

Does the gritty texture make it harder to wash and clean these mugs after use? I am very specific about hygiene and I’m skeptical about these mugs:/

It’s not porous as all, it’s still very solid. I’ve had no problems cleaning them at all.

will a ceramic mug keep my drink hotter than let say a simple regular glass cup?

Ceramic does outperform glass a bit because it contains air pockets within the structure. I don't know if you'll notice a drastic difference though, your drink may stay warmer for a few more minutes.
