Japan's First New Carrier Sight After Modification, F-35B ready to deploy

Ғылым және технология

New Japanese aircraft carrier JS Izumo after modifications
Japan continues its efforts to convert the “JS Izumo” (DDH-183) and “JS Kaga” (DDH-184) ships, previously used as helicopter carriers, into “mini carriers” with a $28 million modernization to deploy F-35B fighters. In this context, the modifications made to the ship JS Izumo (DDH-183), which was converted to a "light aircraft carrier", are shown. Officially described as a "multipurpose destroyer", the Izumo is the flagship of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.

@Hai Huang goei kan are all translated destroyer by THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT and match the size of a destroyer, except for those izumo, hyuga, and the new mogami although the name “multi-purpose destroyer” doesn’t appear on the papers and news now (maybe they changed it?), they called the izumo by that name when they decided to refit

@@haihengh Japanese NOT allowed to have carriers. So their helicopter carriers was a multi purpose desrroyer. The Izumo's class was "Izumo-class multi-purpose destroyer". As a Japanese citizen, with the cooperation of the US Marine Corps, I am very happy that our Maritime Self-Defense Force's "JS escort ship Izumo=出雲" (DDH-183) succeeded in launching and arriving at the first F35 fighter after the war. I am deeply grateful. thank you! I am deeply impressed that Japan has finally come to this point for the first time in 75 years. I can't rely on the US military forever without an aircraft carrier! Let's make it possible for us to manage it to some extent. It is based on the idea. The "JS escort ship Kaga=加賀" (DDH-184) will also be improved so that it will be able to launch and land F35 fighters, such as heat-resistant specifications, by the same three years.

The "destroyer" designation is for pure political reasons. The Japanese constitution only allows a self defense force so calling it an aircraft carrier shows an aggressive stance. So what's in a name or in this case a designation? They can use the destroyer in whatever capacity or make whatever alterations to the ship and get by the Japanese Constitution. In the future they should build a real carrier on the 60K ton class, they are going to need against China and I bet they will still call it something else other than an Aircraft Carrier unless their constitution is change in this respect. WW2 is already 75 year old and Japanese politician should take a more aggressive position towards China which is only thing the Chinese Communist Party understands.

i mean, the reason why japan isn't allowed to have carriers is that it is considered an offensive weapon. Carriers are used to exert military power overseas, which is why USA has a whole bunch of them so she can deploy air power across the globe. Carriers are basically range extensions for a nations air power. You don't need to extend the range of your air power for defensive reasons, as land based airfields are far more efficient at doing this. I'm 100% sure that aircraft used by Japan has enough range to cover the entirety of Japanese waters to combat any foreign aggression. This is just another case of the worlds superpowers pretending not to see something. Helicopter carriers dont count, because they are considered to be mainly defensive. Modifying the carriers to be able to launch F35s is definitely a breach of article 9 in the Japanese constitution. Honestly, at this point they might as well just publicly renounce the clause that renounces Japan's rights belligerency. Then again, in 2014 Abe did pretty much tear up the provision in all but name so might as well go all the way.

Greetings from Japan. Many people have a misconception about Japanese "destroyer", but the Japanese government and JMSDF do not classify these ships as destroyers. Almost all JMSDF naval combat ships are called "goeikan". This word literally means "escort ship" but the nuance is closer to "combat ship". However, for some reason, "Goeikan" is translated as ”destroyer” on English web like wikipedia. This is probably because the ship numbers of these are DD-XX. Indeed that Izumo class ships are also designated as DDH, In this case, however, the use of DD is only customary, and the Japanese government has NO intention of making its carrier ownership ambiguous to the international community. Because, Japan has no treaties with any countries that restrict the ownership or operation of aircraft carriers, unlike Russia.

Don't know what's so clever about a ship being designated a helicopter carrier... It's a standard description and class of military ship of a particular size, design and capability. The US for instance has a fleet of helicopter carriers... No angled decks, no fixed wing planes, only large numbers of helicopters to augment various amphibious capabilities. So, until the F-35B was considered to have very limited offensive military power and was seen mainly as support for amphibious operations. Conversion to a Lightning Carrier changes all that. Although its planes cannot carry the same payload as planes that launch from catapults, the F-35B still can carry a lot more weaponry than a helicopter and at great range (many hundreds of kilometers), all far beyond the capability of a similar sized ship that deploys only helicopters.

Ballistic missiles CANNOT be used to hit moving ships except through the tiniest of chances or through the use of nuclear warheads. Once they launch they cannot be re-targeted. All their target has to do is keep moving and the missile will miss. The F-35B is a HUGE step forward in aviation. Understand that most countries do not have a large enough carrier to launch fixed wing fighter jets and instead had to use helicopters or the Harrier II. Neither are good options against a modern air force. The F-35 turns light carriers like this into MUCH more formattable ship. It is even better when combined with the Osprey. This means the US will field 11 Ford/Nimitz and 11 America/Wasp class ships that will eventually be able to carry 512 or more F-35C 220 F-35B. The F-35 i not a replacement for the F-15 or F-22, but I think it is a great replacement for the Harrier II, F-16, F-18, and F/A-18 as well as likely the Growler. Add in 189 F-22, 140 new F-15EX (if not more), 280 upgrades A-10 as well as a whole arsenals of upgraded air o air, air to ship, air to ground missiles, cruise missiles, hypersonic missiles, and glide bombs to compliment these jets. The last 5 years and the next 5 years combined has more than doubled he strength o the US air force and navy and other advancements in defensive missiles and laser defense as well as upgrades and replacement ground vehicles, the US has made some incredible improvements in a very short time. By 2035 almost everything will have been upgraded or replaced.

If Japan does decide to go ahead and build a dedicated aircraft carrier for the F35C, I'd suggest that they build something in the size of the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier it's basically a light carrier perfect for a small country like Japan and maybe also talk to other friendly country's (South Korea and Australia are the first 2 that come to mind) and see if they would be interested in buying one or two.

Japan is an aircraft carrier and so is Australia. Australia don't need a carrier because we don't project power. When we did have aircraft carriers the only thing they were good for were carrying troops and getting involved in accidents with other ships. They never did anything with aircraft.

I'm sorry but the Queen Elizabeth's are definitely the definition of not a small carrier, however the point still stands, a half dozen f-35Bs launching from each of a dozen small carriers and assault ships would be the definition of an overwhelming strike, They would make a nice first strike clearing out the enemy air and damaging enemy AA so that a second strike made up of F/A-18s with their much heavier payloads can deliver the hammer blow and wipe out the enemy Navy and land installations. A fantastic strategy, especially if we have the Valkyrie fighter drone launching B-1s by that point, just imagine a massive force of 100 of 35s each being escorted by a pair of Valkyrie drones.

@@donaldclifford5763 it only makes sense, F-35s have fairly limited payloads but have the most advanced stealth capabilities of any aircraft as well as fantastic Air dominance capabilities, they are second only to F-22s in their capacity to assassinate enemy air while remaining unseen, while their dog fighting capabilities are dubious at best this hardly matters if the enemy has no idea you are there until they get devoured by a swarm of AMRAAMs. Larger weapons like bombs and ASMs while usable by the F35 would immediately destroy it's stealth capabilities leaving it vulnerable to the enemy. The F/A-18 on the other hand, has absolutely no stealth capabilities, meaning that while it is a fantastic dog fighter more than capable of air supremacy, it would still be vulnerable to modern weapons, and so severe losses would be inevitable if it had to engage enemy Air, on the other hand the F/A-18 is capable of bringing a simply ridiculously Heavy Payload to any battle, including powerful standoff anti-ship missiles as well as radiation seeking missiles, and even precision guided munitions, meaning that so long as the hornets don't have to worry about enemy fighters literally anything a wing of them could meet they wouldn't immediately destroy. So yeah I believe the best way to fight a modern carrier battle is to send the f-35s first to destroy the enemy aircraft and then send in the hornets to destroy the enemy Navy, I want to punch of scalpels followed by warhammers.
