This is what the 787 experience was meant to be a 8 across economy class with 18” seat bases in a 2-4-2 configuration . If you see one that is 9 across in a 3-3-3 the the carrier squeezed in an extra seat at the expense of your comfort. Thank you JAL for doing it right.

Technically 18.9, so basically 19, which is even better than the average of 18.1 on the A380!

Pro-tip: Bring bowl to face, and ‘scoop’ rice to the mouth. Re: chopsticks. ☺️

Flew this route last year! Very convenient that you can avoid having to transfer at LAX or SFO

Thanks for another great review! JALs economy has been my favorite long haul economy to date. I flew the NRT-DFW route in November and was extremely impressed with their service, food and seating. I hope to fly with JAL again soon!

I know, right?! Everyone who’s watched my videos departing SAN lately probably think this is the rainiest place on earth. 😂 Glad you enjoyed the video!

I feel like JAL is underrated, looks like you had a good trip before the Virus hit, at least we have KZread to keep us entertained.

We always try to fly JAL or ANA to Japan. It's worth the few dollars more. Great service, good food, decent seats.

If I'm not mistaken JAL is the last airline to still have 8 abreast economy in their 787-8s. All 787s were originally supposed to do 8 abreast in Economy to give a superior product to the A330 which it was competing with. Unfortunately all the other airlines decided to squish in 9 abreast. Just like how the original 777s were 9 abreast in economy and now it's hard to find one that's not 10.

It seems to be a trend with Boeing aircraft, one which has plagued many of their models flying today. The 737 was originally a 5 abreast aircraft. 6 abreast quickly became the standard. The 747 was originally a 9 abreast aircraft, with a slightly unusual by today’s standards 3-4-2 arrangement. That very quickly became 3-4-3. The 777? Just like the 747, 9 abreast became 10. As for the 787, that’s covered by this video. The only aircraft to escape the trend is the 767, as the 8 abreast high density option was simply too cramped to ever catch on, being even tighter than already rare 9 abreast on the A300’s extended family or 10 abreast on the A350 (except for you PAL, although it was very predictable from one of the few full service carriers to fly 9 abreast A330s). As for the A380, nobody needs that many seats to warrant 11 abreast 😂

I always fly JAL from San Diego to Manila. I love this airline!

Glad to see a review of this flight! I remember when JAL first started SAN and it was crazy to see a smaller airport get TPAC flights! Hope my home airport (AUS) follows suit

@@rileyw3660 a lot big companies moving there making it unsustainable for the poor parts of the local population. The company execs can fly direct and pay a premium -> demand for a direct flight maybe 3x weekly

The new shoes are outstanding !! Great review as always Scott....a most excellent flight with JAL. Glad you are home safe and sound. Here in Australia if you have been overseas and arrived back its an automatic 14 days of home isolation and we have been advised to avoid ALL overseas travel. Qantas and Virgin are grounding planes and changing routes as I write. Virgin Australia are grounding all international flights shortly and Qantas to London are now going via Perth twice a day.It will be an interesting few months and I have an awful feeling many carriers will go the wall unless the Government helps them out. Anyway you had a comfortable flight ...in the new shoes and using chopsticks !! Thanks again !!

I was lucky enough to fly to Japan in December 26th 2019 in Premium Economy classs and by memory, it looked like the Business class on the Virgin flight I took a few months ago from Canberra to Gold Coast.

Thanks for this content I am now only flying JAL to Philippines.

Narita is amazing! When things get better you should definitely go and check it out. And...I was actually booked on the DL A330 out of SAN next week but I had to cancel. 😕 It just isn’t safe to fly right now.

@@sanspotter I feel Haneda is better in almost every way, except walking distance from some of the gates to immigration. Have a flight booked to FUK via TPE. I'm guessing it might not happen.

I'm supposed to be in Japan for my birthday right now... and even though I've watched this video already, it got recommended to me again. Oh, the feels... Can't wait to look back at all this and laugh! (Also, love the then-new shoes.) Maybe you've covered this before, but how do you compare ANA and JAL? I've flown ANA business and first class a few times (all on points/miles), but never flown JAL. Love ANA but is it worth giving JAL a run?

Wow!!! I would opt to fly out of San Diego for a trip to Asia if needed be. I am living here in Vancouver, B.C. and the load is always cramped

You’re very welcome! Seat recline was just about the same as any other airline - but the generous legroom made a big difference. Also, the cabin got really dark with the dimmable windows. Maybe not as dark as any other aircraft with normal window shades, but plenty dark for sleeping.

I'm going to be flying Japan Airlines economy next month. I love the leg room - are there footrests? Thanks for your videos!

Great video there of JAL..In my honest opinion,more airlines should adapt an 8 abreast compared to a 9 abreast configuration on the 787 Dreamliner👍🏼

Other channels that only have boring subtitles ant zero story telling can't event compare! My trick to economy is to book the second to last row, aisle seat. For whatever reason those back rows are often half empty. Actually for over half my trips to Southeast Asia (SFO>BKK) this has been the case.

Always wanted to try JAL and this review just further's that belief that they are a very good airline, your review scott was welcome distraction from all the god dam COVID 19 stuff were bombarded right now. surprised you didn't stretch out with all that empty space beside you. oh love the shoes, await the review.

@@sanspotter your style is so refreshing and a welcome change from fellow av geeks. when intl flights are all back up and running, how about flying china airlines from Ontario, CA to Taipei, Taiwan. One other av geek has done it in Business, but bet it would be nice ride in Economy.

I was due to fly LAX to NRT on JL 61 today. Everything had to be cancelled a month ago. I completely understand, but I was really looking forward to trying their premium economy.

I'll never forgive SAN for getting rid of the commuter terminal. :D

The meals look much better than what you'd find on even international business class on a US carrier. I've flown with JL in all cabins except PE and found their service excellent. My only complaint is they keep the cabin temperature a bit too warm.

It’s 2-4-2 actually - but very spacious so it feels great!

I hope this route will be operated in july because of the olympic games.

Scott has the San Diego route been officially upgraded to sky suites for all routes? Planning my honeymoon and I was trying specifically to avoid the old shell seats. If it is upgraded then I won't bother routing through LAX of SFO to get the Apex suites.

I am one of those who scheduled to fly but cant make it due to current situation. I can't use chopsticks too but i remembered clearly that cutlery set came with fork and spoon as well as chopsticks by default. I think fork and spoon much more practical than chopsticks. I can see having rice during meal service is as asian as it can be. 😂 I think the Frozen ice-cream is common theme on onboard flight😂 By the way what is your height? I think jal economy seats is one of the best in the class. 👍 Keep up the good work. *Btw any possibility on flights review continuity from Malaysia back to home? Just odd seeing your starflyer flight and then it suddenly jump onto this?

That 787 was exactly supposed to be at the level on comfort. Sadly, airlines fail like always again

LOVE your shoe's. Always have. Gotta love JAL not pretentious not intrusive. Just calming like the citizens of japan. Take note Delta American and United.

Hi Scott, well, in "former years" I would have agreed on excellent Food for eco/cl. Always loved JAL. But this is a new world now. Here in Southern Bavaria we are no longer allowed to leave our homes except for foodshopping, doctor etc. Plus since I am a "free" instructor I have no more income. I am not alone milllions of People overhere have to face the same Situation. Never thought that something that fate would throw me into such a Situation. Plus I have to take care of my 92 year old mother. She cannot walk anymore. Two years ago m Fear is all around here in our Country I Always LOVED your Reports. Please , please protect yourself and stay healthy claus

I’ve taken a very big hit financially as well, so it’s been a little hard to stay motivated with the regular video schedule. Woohoo! The good thing about being grounded is that I’ll have more time to spend on my bike now. 😆 FYI, I’ve ditched my road bike and I’m now street riding on my old rockhopper comp (with street tires). It jumps curbs and stairs a lot better than my road bike did. 😆 June might be too soon with all the quarantine stuff going on, but yeah...well eventually have to ride together!

@@sanspotter a Rockhopper that is classic I love those things I think getting all kind of trouble with them when I was a kid I used to do some real dangerous stunts with them back when I was naive of broken bones and all the different things that you could mess up that is awesome we definitely have to get a ride in I'll email you personally and we'll go over the details about getting a ride and when this thing is over I definitely want to make a video with you otherwise the white blouses very interesting I liked it I've never seen Jal personally and I've always been fond of their Livery and paint schemes I have a few 747 and triple seven models but man that 787 was beautiful
