Janus, the Two-Faced God of January

For my last video of 2023, I discuss the pagan god Janus, after whom the month of January is named; why he has two faces, how it’s related to this time of year, the winter solstice, Christmas, and the general ambiguity and uneasiness of places of transition. Happy New Year!

Circumcision is included illness. What some people would call eve-ill. Or that which is veiled. Until learning. Circumcision is the destruction of the veil. Hopes of peering into machinery. Seeing mirrors all the way into turtles. A disfiguration of the self for conspiracy. Practiced in many peoples fearful of trust. It is neither beginning nor end. Yet limiar.

There is a famous Supreme Court case (United States v. Santana) where a drug dealer had been standing "directly on the threshold of her doorway" when the police showed up and arrested her without a warrant. This sparked a massive debate--one that continues to this day--over the exact location of where your home actually starts for purposes of requiring a warrant. Symbolism playing out in real life!

*"Santana, while standing in the doorway of her house, was in a "public place" for purposes of the Fourth Amendment, since she was not in an area where she had any expectation of privacy, and was not merely visible to the public, but was exposed to public view, speech, hearing, and touch as if she had been standing completely outside her house. Thus, when the police, who concededly had probable cause to do so, sought to arrest her, they merely intended to make a warrantless arrest in a public place upon probable cause, and did not violate the Fourth Amendment. The two faces, one looking back and one looking forward, makes perfect sense. What do most people think of in their minds when January comes. They look back to the previous year and contemplate what happened(making judgments about it), while simultaneously looking to the future(with hopefulness of what is to come).

Unharmonized opposites are weird to imagine and weirder to encounter. Ambiguity can be so freeing and rich, but also so fraught with unfamiliarity that verges on spiritual or psychological horror, especially if it doesn't feel like there's a beginning or end, which itself can be Janus-faced. I'd rather live a simple life of warmth and in the embrace of divine light or water rather than the turbulent horror of the truly paradoxical. Ficino is a great source to go to for more about this kind of thing. Great video, thx! 🙂🙃

As I was once decoding the Arabic word Jinn it lead me to the word Janus. And I found this very interesting because the ‘jinn’ are typically described as “good and bad” symbolically they are the people who are on the threshold of dark and light. One step can take them to darkness and one can take them to the light. It also lead me to the word “janitor” as janitors are the key holders of gates, buildings etc etc…also jinns are described as “unseen entities” and if we think about it we really ignore janitors to the point we don’t even notice they are there….

A genie is also related to genius and Juno. And I have often been a janitor. No one knows we are there until we aren't, which is how we prefer it. No one notices the janitor until they get one that isn't high IQ and working on a master's or doctorate degree, especially, in English Literature, Philosophy, Music, or Archeology. Low IQ janitor means dirt pushed around. No janitor means nothing is clean. Janitors don't only hold the keys to entry, they also hold the keys to genius and often have far more education and intellect than those they clean for. It's a great secret not many know. As far as thresholds, those are the weak spot in a home's construction and also tend to have a spot that's not quite perfect with a strip covering the ugly area where interior and exterior meet. It's a nuisance area that gets high traffic. It's the threshold into a home, not a non residence that tends to be the problem. When you cross that you come under that home's spirit and it can repel someone, or cling on after they leave. When I cleaned homes, I had to quit, because some of the homes of the wealthy are too full of Native American and African art and medicine bundles. These people are totally ignorant of the spirit in these items or why the original owners get rid of them after generations. I became so sick after exposure to these medicine bundles and artifacts, I could barely breath upon entering the homes and it was like going under water. I never believed in haunted houses until one house tried to kick me out, and things flew off the walls at me....that house had a strange chapel with a cross on it in the back yard and claw marks on all the doors. And once, a native of a tribe told me of a home on the reservation was boarded up to keep anyone from going in. They'd locked the old medicine man's bundle inside after he and his family became Christians and they never looked back. They wanted nothing to do with the generational, "gift," which was some sort of ancient pig that could climb the walls and spoke in the old languages. A vampire can't suck your blood unless invited in. And a janitor is a type of genius and exorcist that senses things, and cleans up the bad mojo. Cleanliness is next to Godliness. Someone once told me that, "Gift" means, "poison" in German. Beware of gifts, beware of thresholds and more than crossing them, who crosses yours bearing gifts? Are they naughty or nice?

There’s an interview with SF and fantasy author Gene Wolfe where he discusses the concept of the threshold in literary and scientific terms. He mentions that science fiction (the mythic future) and fantasy (the mythic past) are often criticized by the literary establishment because they don’t deal with the “here and now” in the same way that “literary” or “realistic” fiction does. Gene Wolfe then turns the conversation to temporal science and how scientists struggle to prove the existence of a “knife’s edge” present reality at all. Therefore, in one sense, all we really have are the past and future, and fantasy and science fiction are more real than literature about the so-called “present.” In other words, Wolfe reframes literary fiction as a literature of the threshold, something more elusive than literary critics would have us believe.

Fun fact: The name of the "The Good Thief" or later known as St. Dismos means "Sunset," "To the West," or "Death" and is meant to invoke imagery of a ship vanishing or sinking below a sunset on the horizon of a body of water. Also, D in Hebrew is often represented by a door. 1-3 letters are heavenly #s and 5-8 are earthly #s. 4=D the door. 9 = completion. Heaven + Earth. The Prophet Daniel is a fractal archetype that fits most of this imagery as well. He's packed full of symbolism! 😊

I was studying the story of Cain and Abel this morning. I have an intuition of a similar relationship going on in that story. Cain is the "wild man" or the "outer man" who find himself toiling in the dirt and eventually being cast further out toward the edge. Abel on the other hand is this "inner/new" man. Abel is new in the sense that he is literally born more recently than Cain. The symbolism of being a keeper of sheep also seems to have an element of "keeping/gathering" toward the center or the inside. The sin comes when the outer man kills the inner man rather than providing his strength/fruit/body to support the inner man. What happens when the outer man kills the inner man? The outer man is driven from the face of God and the ground becomes hostile. Heaven and Earth are separated.

The difference between categories is always arbitrary at its edge, yet necessary for identity to be distinguished at its core. The difference between 2023 at 11:59 and 2024 at 12:00 is essentially nothing at all. Yet we need to distinguish between periods of time and so the line must be drawn, even if its exact time appears arbitrary. Modern activists want us to notice the apparent arbitrary indifference between categories at their edges and use it to claim category itself is meaningless and ought not exist. It takes something true and exaggerates it to play a trick.

Also, the word Janus is mainly composed of another word, etymologically related, which is a body part that acts as a threshold between the inside and the outside, a door to evacuate alien nutrients. At first, I meant this to be sort of a joke but my observation might not be so off. On a more serious note, I might add that what separates one day to another is this liminal and ambiguous period of sleep and dream. In that sense, I believe we could say all recreational activities are thresholds.

Mostly on the artmirrorsart blog and accompanying artmirrorsfuture channel. The depiction of Prudence has evolved over the years and may have started with three heads, is often represented with three women’s heads but just as often with dual heads. A few researchers connect the four cardinal virtues with Thomas Aquinas’ Summa Theologica, which “repurposed” pagan Greek philosophers into Christianity. Since then, Prudence (the double-headed) is represented by the young maiden (providence/foresight) but also memory and the intelligence of the older man.

The pattern is gnostic, not going to work. A character that becomes like Christ through exposure to plain wisdom and not deep hevel is like someone getting exposure to knowledge and thinking themselves great and to be worshipped, like some falling star. The Janus character is meant to stand near the throne and worship God day and night, singing, "Glory, Glory, Glory!" The Janus with the eyes that see front and back isn't to be worshipped or save the world, but to cause all to see and worship God. But a Lucifer character could fulfill a Janus becoming Christ-like, or thinking he was. Ralph Waldo Ellison did an excellent job of this tale and trickery with his, "Invisible Man," an amazing book about an activist that causes chaos all over the place and has no clue it's his vast shining ignorance. Jesus Christ loves even those without knowledge, those in a coma in a bed, seemingly useless and failed, weak humans. He came for the mustard seeds.

He will not be Christ but will in the end start following the call to be Christ-like as we all are called to be. The character is on the outset anti-christian in his beliefs and has to undergo a purification to burn off his friction to God. I'll check out the book! Sounds very interesting, thanks! @@antonolandersson5019 The book was one of Barack Obama's favorites.....haha. Most believe that Ralph Ellison did write a Christ character, but there is absolutely no way that's possible if one knows some Biblical apocalypse....the main character is actually, an idiot and one of the most brilliant things I've ever seen, because so many readers are deceived by him. I ran it past an old professor that had read the book many times, and he said he'd never considered the character, Invisible Man, anything but a Christ character, but after I showed all the Biblical and Milton allusions, he said he couldn't unsee it and that Ellison had indeed, written one of the most deceptive Lucifers ever written, because most had assumed he was a Christ since the 1950's. Ellison was brilliant and deceived even the elect and most educated, and never once revealed the truth. Ellison crammed it full of Greek and Biblical myth, as well as American history and music. It's possibly one of the greatest, even most prophetic American books ever written about us, but also very under read. There is some woman in that book that, "awakens" the nameless main character, but her name is Emma, a take on an ancient goddess, Ema. But the main character seems only awakened to his absolute ignorance and degeneracy, and doesn't seem to comprehend the apocalyptic race riot at the end, or his role in it. Ellison was a black man, but seems to have mulled over all the history and issues, politics; and decided most of it was all pointless....and Satan doesn't take sides, he's an opportunist and on all sides and none...... I don't know, can a human ever be purified by their own works? Didn't we fail that, thus, require Grace, and God to cover us? Jesus came to help a lot of very helpless, sick, poor, fallen people. If you've ever fallen very low to pain, poverty, injury you can't help yourself. You're a worm and want to die. The only wisdom I've learned is I can't do it. I can't lift myself up. It always takes someone else to reach down and help, intervene. If we were perfect, we wouldn't need God. I've never once pulled myself back from death. It was always God and a miracle, unexplainable every time. There is knowledge and there is wisdom. Related, but two very different things. Oedipus Rex got knowledge and poked his eyes out. The great difference between Oedipus Rex and Jesus was the parents. Jesus' parents really loved a lot and sacrificed themselves and their egos for that baby, rather than tossing him out like Oedipus' parents. Joseph married Mary, saving her from being stoned at a time when unmarried pregnant women got stoned. Jesus had two very loving parents who went through many travels and sacrifices for him. That's wisdom....saving a lowly baby that couldn't do anything of its own will.....not until older, and then, it was his Father's will.

But I think it dangerous to feel that you are a hopeless case and might as well go on sinning because you're the lowest of the low. We have a free will and can choose to reach up to the divine or not and pray that God will meet us with His grace. The difference between knowledge and wisdom is a interesting question which I have pondered about. For it to be wisdom, it should lead you towards God. Although I have a hard time to understand how the wisest man in the Bible, King Solomon, could turn into an apostate then. Perhaps there was a pridefulness in his earthly wisdom which mislead him. God knows...

But in context, ‘praesens’ signifies, more conceptually and less experientially, one of the three parts of time: the ‘present’, as opposed to the past or the future, keeping in mind, however, that any concept is ultimately derived from experience…

The transitional symbolism is also present in the feast of Theophany, when Christ enters the liminal space of the Jordan, a river that indicates a transition from the old to the new in the Scriptures. It indicates here, among other things, the diminishing of the Old Law (represented in the last prophet St. John the Forerunner--the wild man), and the increasing of the New Law (represented in Christ).

Janus symbolizes God the Father's special function: one face stares down the Primordial Chaos, endlessly observing "all possibility"; the other face projects that vision of possibility into the plan of manifestation that the Son then produces as "existence", in conjunction with the Holy Spirit whose special function is to modulate the pressure of disorder emanating from the Chaotic Void at the bottom side of manifestation "furthest" from God the Father. The Son creates forms and structures powered by the modulated pressure of disorder that the Spirit controls. The middle face of Janus illustrates the Unity of Attention and Intention, the modes of behavior of the two faces.

Great insights, as usual. I think there's also something interesting in Janus' inability to interface with us in the now since he only looks forward and backward (in the vast majority of representations). I think that makes him a flawed wish-fulfillment character exposing our unnatural desire to be able to peer both into the past and future. His contrast with Christ whose past/future perspective comes from transcendence rather than a monstrous opposite face perspective gives us an insight into our own ill-formed imaginations. kzread.info/dash/bejne/mqxhsqyFgK68hbQ.html

  • @tomloewe8474

    @tomloewe8474

    5 ай бұрын

Yes. Liminality is a location of possibility. Neither here nor there. It is the central locus of all things "seen and unseen." It is the place of potentiality where creativity exists, where the unexplored can be explored. It is a spirit-filled environment of encounter. Because of this, the limimal can be a place of danger but also a place of epiphany and revelation. I don't think it's a place that is necessarily sought after (except, perhaps, by artists or madmen), but it can be a place where we find ourselves thrust in-to by necessity, where the rules of the past no longer apply in their fullness and where the soul relies on the grace of God to make the transitions required to take the next step.

January and the gates of Janus were introduced into the Roman calendar/religion by Numa Pompilius, who promoted monotheism and aniconic worship (see Varro, Plutarch). Occasional uses of Janus symbolism among medieval Christians can be interpreted as connecting the new religion to this early, long-lost Roman monotheism.

The months January and February were added after the original ten (March through December). Originally, winter was left unrepresented on the Roman calendar, apparently due to its irrelevance to agriculture. But by the time of the Roman republic Janus and Februa were given their respective months, making winter fully representable in terms of dates. January being the first month did not necessarily occur at the same time: it appears that the start of the year was shifted back from March 1st to January 1st at some time. So it may be somewhat coincidental that January starts the year. But it's very appropriate: having the year both end and start in close proximity to the solstice (in that time taking place on December 25th) is entirely fitting. I like the symbolism of the winter months being added later: chaos and what was regarded as unuseful eventually was incorporated into the worldview. The moment of solstice itself is also powerfully symbolic, both occurring on the darkest day of the year and being the moment when the days begin to get lighter. So, the worst and the best simultaneously (in my view). Janus's two faces fit this perfectly.

Very interesting thoughts. When considering the debate about when a biblical day begins, it could seem like starting the year at the winter rest period of the earth is in line with a sundown-start-of-the-day (ie. from the Genesis text “…the evening and the morning were the ___ day…”); but, Leviticus states that the beginning of months for the biblical year is in the spring (month of the Abib), which on a level points to a sunup-start-of-the-day… Not sure what I think, but find it all interesting to consider in addition to threshold ideas and various philosophical historical accounts.

The past and the future. He transforms the law since he is rotted in the old testament, which Bishop Barron underlines, and is with us to the end time. I think this is another way in which Christianity transforms the old pagan Roman gods. Christ transforms the past for the future good. Now concerning the symbolism of christmas is a conundrum in itself. For december 21-26 is the darkest time of the year and it is also the beginning of the zodiac sign of capricorn, thus capricorn representing a goat. In the Biblical old testament (Leviticus) when priest prayed and performed the atonement ritual for the cleansing of sins of their community the goat was used as a sacrificial rite, thus the priest would lay hands on the goat transferring the peoples sins on the live goat, then setting the goat to raom in the wilderness to be devoured by the deamon azael (a beast in the wilderness) as a form payment for their sins of the people (but for what?). In other ancient custums said of Greece, Egypt and other kingdoms a similar practice was performed by millennarian elite priest in conjunction with the machinations of merchants on the new millennium, however instead of a sacrificial escapegoat a human sacrifice was carried out by the elite priest for fertility rights, of their prosperity and walth. The victim usually consisted of a black slave who naturally was born kind and innocent (gullible). The priest would instruct the community to purposely corrupt the innocence of the slave with machinations usually performed by evildoers so as to find blemish and fault in the slave, to be accused for their millennarian ritual as payment to the evil one. Again for their fertility rites, prosperity and wealth of the kingdom and its citizens. Very coincidental to that of the scapegoat ritual. Either way if it were to have happened in that manner how aweful for that person to have been born coinciding the apointed new millennium. Another awful coincidence that relates to christmas in the west is the traditional celebration of santa clouse, the word santa is an anagram word that spells the name of the evil one by removing the letter n from the center of the word and placing the n at the end of the word. Bazaar! Even more buzaar is the word clause. A business clause in a contact is usually used in a binding business agreements to gives the contract special privilege and rights etc.. when a dyslexic person looks the words santa clause it has been said by some that what they see is the name of the evil one next to the word clause. Whether the business word clause is spelt in the sense of a homonym a word that is spelt the same with different meaning or a homophone a word spelt differently having the same sound and different meaning, as perhaps argued by others. The word clause has the same connotation reference either way. These observations in reading and cross referencing material are difficult grasp as truth and yet their it is. History has referenced certain catholic popes rearranging ancient festive celebrations to fit the same modern calendar christian celebration. The coincidence is that christmas and easter are celebrate with the movement of the celestial heavenly bodies movement in mind being either a moon sing relating to solstice or an equinox etc. There its go figure? in the pursuit of thruth it is still a conundrum ready to uncoverd.
