Taraji P Henson (the mom) is 52, but she does look young, she actually asked Quinta to be on the show

It was a nice change of pace. 😂
I think on some level Janine’s mum does care about her, she’s just extremely selfish. She seemed protective of Janine when it comes to _other_ people, but is incapable of putting Janine before herself.

Very true! This is exactly like my mom
Janine recognizing the sound of her mother's heels reminded me of how whenever I hear my mom's car locking, I get a mini heart attack....even if im not doing anything wrong😭

It was always the jingle of her keys for me! PTSD!😂
Meeting her mom answers a lot of questions about why Jeanine acts the way she does. Barbara really stepped up this episode. Hard to believe this season is almost over
And this explains exactly why the sister left. Hell Jahnine mom live close by and hadn’t saw or spoken to her herself in months.
Rob representing all of us being stressed out over whether or not Janine would be able to go on her vacay.
I love how Barbara and Janine’s relationship has blossomed.
Taraji played this role Soo well 😢 I didn’t know to hate her or love her
I really liked this episode. It showed a lot of the reasons why Janine acts the way she does especially with Barbara. When people saw that Taraji was playing her mom, a lot of them said she looked more like Janine's sister which A) She's old enough to be her mother if you look at their ages and B) Is the entire point. From what we've heard from Janine, she's had to take on a lot of the emotional/parental labor growing up which affected how she and her sister turned out. Her sister was able to leave for herself while Janine felt obligated to stay because she's used to being relied on so heavily. Both girls ended up with a lot of issues. Overall, I love how they did this episode, it was great.
We had an idea of what Jeanine’s parenthood was like, considering how she constantly looks to Barb. But this episode made me feel for her even more. It’s tough to raise yourself.
You guys should definitely do Hidden Figures next Taraji did an amazing job!

Oh she did a fabulous job in that movie! I liked her in Family That Preys and I Can Do Bad All By Myself.
im ngl, Jacob's magic trick at the beginning had me bussing out of the chair like those kids and Ava were😭
Stealing from a teachers lounge (especially when you don't work there) is low. There's already too little supplies there - let us keep the plastic spoons and kuregs damnit!
Taraji was so good as Janine’s mum, I laughed so hard when she imitated Barbara 🤣🤣🤣
this episode hits very close to home because I have a similar relationship with my own mother. well I used to. I've worked very hard at setting strict boundaries but it took a looong time to get there. all that being said, loved seeing Taraji in this episode because she did an incredible job as Janine's mom. it cracked me up that Zuff kept saying that Janine's mom looks younger than her because I'm pretty sure Taraji is like 20 years older than Quinta haha. Taraji just looks damned good for her age ❤

I find it interesting that you guys haven't called out that exact same behaviour in Tariq. It looks like Janine's relationship with her Mum mirrors her relationship with Tariq, in that he was always taking advantage of her finances. She was paying most of the rent, driving him around, supporting his career and he would eat her sandwich. So its just as bad when Tariq does it also.

i think it’s bc of his personality there is definitely more of a bias towards tariq bc at least his love for Janine is a little more raw and genuine than her own mother tbh

“You know I’m a feminist, that’s why I let you pay for my food and gas and stuff” Lol they’re definitely a little similar but it definitely feels more malicious and intentional with her mom. Tariq just still has some maturing to do and he’s pretty oblivious and doesn’t consider her. Doing that shit to your kid when you’re in your 50’s is a whole other level

I feel like Tariq is more like a caricature, and Janine's mom felt more real. It's harder to be angry at someone so silly as Tariq, but her mother was supposed to be there for her and even now never is.
I might be reading into it too much, but I think that the fact that she recognized her mom's footsteps even when she wasn't expecting her to show up at her work shows how much anxiety she must have had growing up in her home. This episode reminded me of how my boyfriend's childhood was. His mom wasn't bad to this extent but she was constantly buying luxury brand items while he was often left without lunch money, or money for things like when they would have a pizza party in class and school field trips. Up until HS he was also left to his own means when she was in the city working during the week (his siblings would take care of him when he was in elementary school) she would call to check up on him but she was never physically there. He doesn't blame her, but it hurts when I see the hurt and disappointment in his face when he talks about it, or when he talks about how selfless my mom was as a parent (she helped him a lot when we started dating). Their relationship is fine now but I think its mostly because he doesn't NEED to rely on her, therefore her selfishness doesn't burden their relationship.
One of Barbara's best episodes. I love whenever she sticks up for Janine!
Brought her into this world at her own expense? No one told you to lay on your back and make a baby. My mom acts just like this
Rob don't be sad, solo trips are the best for one’s personal mental health. I take them at least once a year.
Zuff getting emotional with the baseball conversation between Gregory and the lunch lady LMAO
I love Taraji ❤

Me Too, IDK Why Everybody Trippin, But I Guess Everybody Hasn't Seen Empire, She Was More Ruthless On Their, Her Being On Here In This Episode Was Just Child's Play You Know, Don't Hate On Janine's Mom, But Then Again I'm Used To Her Character Being Like This
Of course her mom's Cookie.
Cookie Lyons is Janine's mom. Who would have expected it?
You guys should consider reacting to Cruel Summer, in my opinion the most underrated teen thriller atm. The second season comes out next week but I’m surprised barely anyone has reacted to it despite its popularity and critical success.

No one has reacted to it because it’s not that popular.
I am so excited to watch the finale with you! 🩵💕
such a great moment for Barbara and Janine as well as Gregory and Shanae-- he has a hard time making friends i think and is socially awkward (he's heavily autism-spectrum-coded, which is cool) so him making a connection outside his routine or what is "necessary" was a small but symbolically and emotionally huge win for him, which could explain the reason Zuff (and me too) was choking up a bit and feeling proud of him. 😊 taraji p henson's arrival was epic lol, i'd never seen her play a character like that. she looked amazing as usual.
This feels familiar
Have y'all seen that clip of Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph) in a bathing suit walking by the pool IRL? She looks GREAT! I hope to look as great as she does at her age!
Thanks, Rob! Thanks, Bryce! Thanks, Zuff! 🏫 #ReelTime #KenWhittingham #AbbottElementary
Solo trips are the best. The only downside is probably you have to spend a bit more money in hotels and stuff like that. But boy, going alone at my own pace to places i want to go is wonderful lol
Janine and Barbara were so amazing this episode :'D. The end with them going shopping together is so sweet
i like the theme of ‘chosen family’ in this show 🫶🫶
The writing for Janine’s mom is too accurate of a depiction of a narcissistic mom. Like who’s momma on the writing team is she based off of 😂 Contrary to what I’ve seen some people say, I don’t think the mom cares about Janine at all. I bet you the only reason she appears to care is because Janine is her blood; in short, an extension of herself.
how did she call her in the beginning of her phone was off? 🤔
I love Taraji ❤ shes an amazing actress, kills every role she gets. But the character got on my nerves because she reminds me of so many moms out there who feel like they did you a favor by doing their job and raising you. (Not my mom, shes amazing 😊)
