"Love Will Never Do (Without You)" is a song by American singer Janet Jackson. Composed by songwriters and record producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, it was recorded for the singer's fourth studio album, Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989). As with all tracks for the album, recording took place at Lewis and Jam's Flyte Tyme Studios in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The song was released as the seventh commercial single from the album on October 2, 1990, by A&M Records. It topped the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in 1991, becoming the fifth number one hit of Jackson's career and the fourth number one single from Rhythm Nation 1814. This gave her the distinction of being the only recording artist in the history of the chart to have seven commercial singles from one album peak within the top five positions, surpassing a record held by Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen.[1] She also became the third woman in the chart's history to amass four number one hits from one album, following Paula Abdul and Whitney Houston.[2] Additionally, Jackson became the first artist to achieve Hot 100 number one hits from a single album across three separate calendar years, preceded by "Escapade" and "Black Cat" in 1990 and "Miss You Much" in 1989. The single also peaked with the top five position of the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Dance Club Songs charts, as well as becoming a top 40 hit across several international singles charts. It is certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), denoting sales of 500,000 units in the US alone.
Lyrically, "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" speaks of love conquering all, despite negative perceptions about a tumultuous relationship. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis originally conceived the song as a duet, potentially featuring male vocalists such as their former employer Prince, or former New Edition members Johnny Gill or Ralph Tresvant. Jackson ultimately recorded the song solo, singing alternate verses in different octaves to simulate a duet. Music critics have praised the song as one of the highlights of Rhythm Nation 1814, with reviews focusing on the execution of Jackson's layered vocals and harmonies. Although released as a single in 1990, Pitchfork included it on their list of "The 200 Best Songs of the 1980s."[3]
A music video directed by Herb Ritts and featuring actors Antonio Sabàto Jr. and Djimon Hounsou was produced to promote the single. In contrast to Jackson's typical videography where she is part of a dancing troupe, the cinematography utilizes a minimalist aesthetic, absent of back-up dancers and elaborate choreography. Jackson, Sabàto Jr., and Hounsou appear along a desert landscape, with a visual emphasis on bare skin and physical intimacy. The video is frequently regarded as the first instance in which Jackson takes on a sexually mature persona, setting the tone for her future projects. Critical analysis in film, feminist and queer theory also examine the video's use of the female gaze through which Sabàto Jr. and Hounsou's bodies are given equal focus. It won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Female Video at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards and appears on the 100 all-time greatest music videos lists produced by MTV, Rolling Stone and VH1. It has been cited as an influence in the videography of other artists such as Britney Spears and Nicole Scherzinger.
Beginning with the Janet World Tour in 1993, Jackson has performed "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" live in each of her concert tours. She also included the song in the setlist for her first Las Vegas regency show, Janet Jackson: Metamorphosis. In 2001, a cover of the song was performed live by Macy Gray in tribute to Jackson as part of the television special MTV Icon, celebrating the singer. Covers have also been recorded by Sally Yeh and Sahara Hotnights. The song appears on two of Jackson's greatest hits compilations, Design of a Decade: 1986-1996 (1995) and Number Ones (2009).

Janet looks absolutely stunning! This "Rhythm Nation" album from 1989 includes hit after hit after hit and is one of my all-time favorite albums. Besides the snacky model Antonio Sabato Jr. (who went on to star on the daytime soaps "General Hospital" and "The Bold and the Beautiful" and the nightime soap "Melrose Place"), the tall shirtless model with the pearly white smile (with his eyes closed) is future two-time Oscar nominee for best supporting actor Djimon Hounsou (2002's "In America" and 2006's "Blood Diamond" ... as well as memorable roles in 1997's "Amistad" and 2014's "Guardians of the Galaxy").

I agree that this track is from one of the best albums of the 80's, I love how it flows from one song to the next and there is nothing that does not impress throughout. Janet at her most beautiful - I remember buying her greatest hits on Laserdisc back in the day and this was a standout video - now it is stuck in my head for the day and I will have to dig out the CD... Both this video and “Cherish” were directed by fashion photographer, Herb Ritts. The similarities have zero to do with Madonna and everything to do with the director’s vision and creativity. Additionally, this style is what Herb Ritts is famous for in still photography. He also directed “Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak-his most famous video. It’s also worth noting that Janet started her rhythm nation album with two black and white videos long before Madonna dropped “Cherish” then closed it out the way she started with this video. The black and white thing actually started on her previous album with the song “Let’s wait awhile.” I saw someone here suggest Janet was byting Alanis’ style with the song “what about” when Janet was dropping rock inspired and angst ridden songs like “This time” and “Black cat before anyone even knew who Alanis was. Janet was pioneering and setting trends for decades. From Got til it’s gone to Trust a try. If only some of these people knew.

This ballad was written in memory of all the victim of the mass shooting of Cleveland Elementary in California in january 1989 and she also talk about also social problems with poverty, malnutrition and education for kids.. This video was a transition to a sexy Janet to she have after this video during the next era, like ''Janet'' and ''The Velvet Rope''. This song was one of my favorites songs of Janet and a incredible song. ''Rhythm Nation 1814'' was my favorite album of her and a iconic album with all songs was excellent. This album was ahead of his time when it's came out and the prelude of debut 90's music. This song established a record for the ''Rhythm Nation 1814'' album: the only artist of a history to produced seven top 5 singles in a same album in the Billboard Hot 100 (four of them in n.1), while this song reaching n.1 and also the first artist to produced n.1 songs in a same album in this same chart to three consecutives years (''Miss You Much'' in 1989, ''Escapade'' and ''Black Cat'' in 1990 and ''Love Will Never Do (Without You)'' in 1991). 1. Miss You Much: n.1 for four weeks in october 1989 2. Rhythm Nation: n.2 for two weeks in january 1990 (behind ''Another Day in Paradise'' by Phil Collins) 3. Escapade: n.1 for three weeks in march 1990 4. Allright: n.4 in june 1990 5. Come Back to Me: n.2 for two weeks (behind ''Vision of Love'' by Mariah Carey) 6. Black Cat: n.1 for one week in october 1990 7. Love Will Never DO (Without You): n.1 for one week in january 1991

One of my two absolute favorite Janet songs (and videos). Along with "Miss You Much". Both from the perfect Rhythm Nation 1814 album.

This song was originally meant to be a duet with Luther Vandross. It was the last Video for the Rhythm Nation Album and the perfect transition video from the black and white Rhythm Nation era To The Sepia colored Janet era. Love this video

This video began the change in Janet’s image to being less covered up and more sexual and sexy. She would then move into the very sexual and sensual Janet. era. The mix of the lower register vocal and the the higher range may have been influenced by Jody Watley’s Still a Thrill and in turn most likely influenced Paula Abdul’s My Love is for Real.

Vintage snack was Antonio Sabato Jr. He was a popular B actor and Calvin Klein model back in the 90s. One of my first crushes (at least openly). Cut to 2021 - Hard Pass with his whacky Qanon Trumper political conspiracy views. 🤮.

Love the reaction! True Janet fans unite. Please do a reaction to the “Just A Little While” video from the Damita Jo album. One of the vintage snacks in this video, the one holding Janet is model/ actor Antonio Sabato Jr. it’s very sad and disgusting that today he is a full on right wing Trump supporter nut job.
