Jane The Virgin Star Gina Rodriguez Opens Up About Hashimoto's Disease | SELF

We asked Jane The Virgin star Gina Rodriguez to talk to someone newly diagnosed with Hashimoto's about how she navigates living with the disease. Hashimoto's disease is an autoimmune disorder in which your immune system attacks your thyroid, a small gland in the front of your neck that produces thyroid hormones. This often leads to an underactive thyroid gland, known as hypothyroidism.

@@rclark8999 I have hashimotos and had JUST finished uni when it flared up for me (luckily exams out the way!). It was overactive and I was super anxious and was dizzy and fainting and couldn't go out until my levels dropped and the docs realised it was hashi. Then it took ages for the medication to get to a decent level, which it is now (10 months later) but I have other problems like IBS which has recently been diagnosed. Just about ready to go back to work now, but it is daunting trying to decide whether to go for a grad role or try and take it slow. Other people I've known with it all react differently and both still stayed in uni/work, guess there are a lot of factors it depends on. If I had a job which I was on sick leave from, I probably would have had at least 3 months off in hindsight from what happened. I was working part time whilst at uni and had to leave that early too when my symptoms got really bad, one day my boss was holding me up so I didn't collapse, was a quick realisation that I was unable to work after that.

@@sallyscott3663 Oh my goodness! Your experience is identical to mine. I was diagnosed last year whilst doing my master thesis. I could not hand my dissertation on time and fast forward one year I'm still trying to complete it. I was also hyperthyroid and the doctor thought I had Graves until the levels dropped. Anxious, didn't sleep for a whole week, was hallucinating, went into ketosis, it was an absolute nightmare. And I thought I was the only one like this.

@@KTR2022 I'm sorry to hear about all the things you went through leading up to proper diagnosis, it is the worst time. The comfort is that things are unlikely (fingers crossed) to get that bad again. I was also confusing the doctors! I think it happens as it did for us often, but doctors will see a higher proportion of people who develop low thyroid levels over time. 10 months later, I applied for a few jobs but nothing worked out in my town so I'm applying for a masters now, although things are uncertain with covid-19 around. Good luck finishing your thesis and stay healthy, wishing you the best!

Thank you so much for this, don't know why I'm tearing up. I haven't been diagnosed with Hashimoto's or hypothyroidism, but I pretty much have all the symptoms - including heavy fatigue. My gp won't take my health concerns seriously and thinks it's "just" depression - and put me on medication. It's good to be reminded that nutrition and exercise is vital, but it's also a struggle every day energy-wise. Gonna try to make it my superpower.

I was “officially” diagnosed a year and a half ago. As soon as I heard the list of symptoms for this disease, I knew I had been suffering from this for much longer. I had been suffering with these symptoms for over 13 years, and I struggled with my doctor because she called me a hypochondriac every time I came in with a “problem” / symptom. She would say I was over weight, or I was depressed.. She even said that I have no reason to have the symptoms that I have. No reason... to have symptoms? Let that sink in.. I had no reason for my hair to fall out, or for me to lose 40lbs because the thought of food made me so nauseous I would puke even after drinking water.. No reason to have chronic migraines, or chronic urticaria, or joint pain and swelling, mood swings, or panic disorder.. No reason for my right eye to be swollen (later diagnosed as Graves’ disease, which could have permanently damaged my eyesight), no reason to have a heavy period for 10 days straight, every two weeks.. No reason to have high blood pressure/ skipping heart beats, tremors or anything else I went in for? No. Apparently it was all in my head because I was “Too young to have any real problems”. She said this to me. Multiple times. I let her convince me that I was crazy for YEARS. Let me tell you something, illness does NOT have an age restriction! This started when I was in middle school, and I am STILL dealing with it now at 28. I’m so angry I stayed with her for as long as I did- because a little over a year ago now, I had to have my thyroid removed to save my life. That doctor could have killed me, because she refused to diagnose my hashimotos and Graves’ disease despite my family history. My thyroid was so mangled and over-grown, the surgeon was shocked when he saw it. I’ve been feeling much better without my thyroid, but I could have felt better over a decade ago, and the thought makes me furious.. because despite the fact that I feel better, there’s a possibility that my thyroid could be growing back. Yep. Your thyroid can regenerate. It’s not common- BUT is more common in people with, you guessed it, GRAVES DISEASE. I might be starting at square one only a year after surgery... But at least I have an Endo who cares and is taking every step to ensure my comfort and safety. If you’re going through this, just know you are not alone, and you should NOT let your doctor make you feel wrong about how you feel. It’s not in your head.. Hashimotos, Hypo, hyper... Graves- they’re all terrible diseases that wreak havoc on our bodies. We know our bodies better than anyone.. don’t let ANYONE try to convince you otherwise.

But I’m glad they’re talking about it because it’s very under diagnosed and so many women especially have it, and getting medication can help you feel so much better.

This is so sad so sweet...i love see her speaking with sincerity..if you have a healthy diet it's different from a diverse diet 'cause for this desease you always have different needs per day I'm just saying..hormones are always changing your body and you have to adapt yo that that way "Gina said the food is expensive"

This makes me love her so much more. I have a lot of autoimmune diseases etc and I love the hope and positivity she gives me. She is so right. EACH BODY IS DIFFERENT. I’m a professional patient but also an advocate and I’ve witnessed so many different stories. Having Lyme, I hear so many stories of failure... but recently hearing so much about diet and positive effects it’s had over anything else. So yes, I will do my picc line 9 months antibiotics, but I’m also plant based in how I’m eating. Exercising is difficult right now as I just had an unfortunately failed brain surgery and also have POTS, but I’ll get there. The heavy depression has been holding me back. I just need find some real structure. And do it.

I found out about my Hashimoto 1,5 year ago, hormones are tricky in my case. But this sickness helped me a lot when a month ago my doctor said that I have SM too. Immunological diseases are hard to figure out, but the most important is your mind health, next - quality of the food and amount of salt and sugar into it. Gina - love you more and more, such a positive vibes around you!

@@esthersaldana9772 I tested positive for the Hashimoto's marker, but they said my thyroid function was fine for now. I've heard that symptoms can start showing up before it shows up in your blood work. Do you find that to be true?
