Jane Birkin is still alive and still very popular in Europe. She has nowadays a very casual, yet distinctive style made of confy, light, elegant blouses and trousers. Her favourite colours being beige and blue, in all their many variations. Nowadays she is much more a style icon here in Europe than she ever was when she was in the seventies.

I love how classic and timeless her look is. When I first saw her pictures I couldn't even tell what era she was from but something just looked retro, maybe the teeth or camera film, and that's when I looked her up and found out she was a 1960s+ fashion icon. I'm obsessed.

Jane Birkin looks very dramatic to me, too! The beveled edges of her frame are the only Natural trait I see. Although many FN typed model types (super dry-lacking both visible muscle & fleshiness, narrow shouldered) appear far more D than FN to my eyes, maybe leaning more towards beveled than angular differentiating them from Dramatics. Feel like the N category is so broad in some ways.

It's funny how we're drawn to our opposites when we start to explore fashion. Since I was a pre-teen to my late twenties, I wanted that "after-party" look, but I'm a soft gamine and those lines... well, those don't make any favour to my figure. Of course, everyone can dress anything they like, but when I learned about lines and proportions, that was a game-changer for me. Now I wear gamine lines (slightly looser than Kibbe's recommendations, though) and I've never felt better in my wardrobe!

Right? I’m a Dramatic and I love Gamine clothing. Kind of a Taylor Swift syndrome I guess lol But every time a wear this style I feel like I’m trying too hard to look “fun”. I’m also trying to match my personal preferences with my type suggestions to come up with a good middle ground. But sometimes it’s tough like... For example, I love shorts and short skirts, but Dramatics clothing is always like “cover your legs! Long pants, long skirts, long dresses” ... yikes lol. But at least I like geometric patterns and things, I guess.

The reason why Jane Birkin took a straw basket with her everywhere is because she said that she couldn't find a bag to carry all of her stuff. That's when she met an executive at Hermès who ended up designing the famous Birkin handbag so that Jane could carry a bag big enough for all her things. Also, that photo of her with the short, boyish hair is from the low budget film that Gainsbourg made starring Birkin as a weird tomboy who falls in love with a creepy Joe Dallesandro of Andy Warhol fame. The film is called Je t'aime moi non plus, just like the title of Gainsbourg's and Birkin's infamous sexy song with all of that moaning. So I guess they wanted to capitalize on the fame of that song and transform it into a silly soft porn film. The song is better. Though it's a thoroughly dumb movie, Birkin is great in anything!

It was so fun hearing you describe my 60s hair! Blonde blunt cut but I used LARGE hair rollers about 3inches wide to set wet hair then a hairdrier you SAT under to dry the hair...they had portable ones you could put on a table. Once dry you brusjed out the large curls ...that gave the hair volume on top and you backcombed...we said teased, the hair at the roots only them smoothed the hair the hair came in under your chin it wasnt as puffymas a bubble which came earlier in the 60s gradually the hair was not as rounded at the bottom as in the picture you show. Everyone wore minidresses shift style as you,show....go go boots ....have you seen videos of go go dancers from that era? THOSE boots...often white. False eyelashes were popular. Everyone wore eyeliner. Red lips were out of fashion, as youmsay, pale lips. Legs were emphasized rather than chest or hips...it was the era of the thin girl...if you were curvy you didnt show it. If a man wasnt a leg man i.e. mostly attracted to legs hendidnt like the look. Men who liked curvy women only got to see what they wanted to see on beaches...well endowed girls in bikinis. That era was all about legs and eyes.

I think in some cases there can be a higher percentage of a certain type in some places, for example, there are probably a lot of Ds, SDs and FNs in Scandinavian countries and those of Scandinavian descent as they tend to be comparatively taller. I think it’s so interesting to read the comments saying that they would look like a homeless person with a style like this. This is my style and it works best on me. I feel like I always look best when I’m not trying too hard. Whenever I’m all dolled up I look kind of off. It just doesn’t suit me. So I guess I really am a natural! I am just not sure where I fall on the natural spectrum. My face is softer/yin but my body is more yang.

I'm a flamboyant natural and when I was in my young 20 and didn't know who Jane Birking was I used to wear same haircut and dress like that too hehe but it was something instinctively , I always felt great in non feminine clothing, anything with flowers , puffiness , with too many little details never felt good on my and I use to love playing with some male garment, like big suit jackets , love to wear 90 style of jeans a little bit baggy , but I also like the skinny jeans too... i think I'm a flamboyant natural as a main characteristic but I also have a lot of drama since I'm really tall and skinny but in an athletic way... So sometimes I like to wear full suits for parties ( including a bow tie. I like that when going out and feeling like wanting some drama but in daily life i'm a pure Natural flamboyant I dont even brush my hair and just woke up like this kind of style. Feel very close to everything on this video.

  • @leeraewi

Just saw this whole system of body type breakdowns online and found myself here. I'm definitely flamboyant natural and will definitely say that in my early 20s, I also threw the gamine type looks, because my body was so petite then (got boobs in my late 20s, and gamine looks started to become quite tacky on my body). With a bit of age, your body and your mind relax a bit, and it no longer makes sense. Playing with relaxed shapes to obscure the squareness but drawing in the drama with thin ankles and long limbs and an elegant waist/hip is the way to go. Flamboyant indeed. It's also funny that you should mention the "afterparty" vibe, as when I was in fashion school (still in my waif era, but nonetheless) I developed a mantra of wearing something from bed into the day and something from the day into bed, so my outfits definitely developed this hyper relaxed, hyper chic vibe that has remained my signature, even as the specific elements and styles change overtime.

I can wear L, XL, XLL men's stuff and it looks amazing - better than a lot of other stuff, even though I'm rather thin - as long as I draw it in somewhere, with a belt or an ankle boot or a rolled up sleeve or even a turtle neck.

I feel like Jane Birkin is more on the natural side of flamboyant natural. When she dresses more flamboyant, like in the boho style, the clothes more or less take over. She's not tall enough to pull that off. I think when she dresses all natural, she looks her best. Maybe even natural with some classical influences. Perhaps she is a natural in stead of FN. It's funny though how there is an overlap also between FN and gamine, in the quirky statements of weird proportions. Love this series! I hope you will do Caroline de Maigret one day!
