I hated Abbott at first, but he grew on me so I really liked him by halfway through the season. Plus, he has a great voice. He could read me the phone book and I'd hang on his every word. Especially if I could look at him while he did it. ;)

Nobody from Law Enforcement likes it when a civilian exposes their darkest secrets and makes them look like idiots. Well, they are idiots in the first place. Red John controlled the law and nearly got away with it and as usual, American government doesn't like it. So even though Jane murdered a serial perverted killer that haunted everything around him, they still want to think they are above the law.

'its not a gift.' i think we see how much this is true when he actually tries to get close with people, like in loving lisbon. his mentalism keeps him from being honest with himself and others, and from being close to them vulnerablly-that's the only way that it works. its a gift for people who want it to be used against others, but not a gift of bettering one's life to the one that has it

I agree with him. I guess it would not always be so convenient to read through people's minds - that would bring a lot of headaches and distract the peace of mind one would need in an already awkward world.

It caused him to brag on TV, which motivated a serial killer to murder his wife and child. Many would consider that a curse, not a gift.

I'm so weirded out that there are some people who think the show should have ended with Jane leaving the states/staying on the island. Jane wanted to use his abilities in law enforcement before chasing RJ, before even being a tv psychic. He said as much in 4x10. There was more to his work at the CBI than RJ, even if RJ was the main drive. His most urgent desires were human connection, purposeful use of abilities, and greatest of all a home and family. The island only barely satiated the first of those needs, and never fully. Lisbon gave him as much of those as he was willing to accept from her, and with RJ out of the way she gave him the last two needs as well: a home and a family. Him staying on the island would have been a half-hearted and narratively insulting choice--a lonely, ragged, and forgettable ending for two characters who not only deserved worlds better, but also by virtue of their established personalities would never have accepted it as permanent. Thank God the writers knew better than to do that.

So I remember the episode, I don't remember him saying that he wanted to work with law enforcement. In fact, at the end of that episode he basically quit the CBI until Lisbon helped him get his memories back. I think what people are referring to is the show ending on the death of Red John. It would have more powerful and the show would have dragged on less. Not saying that the rest of the show was bad after that point but it definitely lost some of it's intensity. Also, I agree that Jane did like being a consultant. He liked playing games with people, solving puzzles, and putting bad people away. It's just that he wanted more than that and he thought he could get the rest on the island. Though being an American in a foreign country where you barely speak the language would have made that impossible.

@@henrypeters5291 "I help catch bad guys? Wow that sounds like fun; I always wanted to pit my psychic skills against criminals." He said this when he lost his memory. Before even meeting Angela, he wanted to use his skills for more than personal readings. I believe it's one of the reasons he started helping the police with Red John in the first place before his family was killed, to say nothing of it feeding his already out of control avarice and vanity. The psychic work got him plenty of money and attention already though; it was the chase he craved. He tried leaving at the end of 4x10 because he was running away from the tragic past he could sense, and the coworkers who loved a version of him he was afraid to remember. As far as the Red John plot, it was always going to run into the issue of viewer fatigue: if it's successful then it can keep running, but the longer it runs the more fed up people get. It's hard to balance a serial and a procedural, and most shows that run long implement serial storylines that resolve in cycles to prevent said fatigue. The burnout was inevitable imo, but I consider what they accomplished something to be very proud of. Flaws aside, it's an all-but perfect recreation of the hero's journey. Wanting it to end in tragic destruction or alienation is sort of like pining for Odysseus to stay trapped on Ogygia. Literary subversion for it's own sake is creative dishonesty, and frankly an audience betrayal.

@@tabithaprovan957 Okay, I actually remember that scene. That said, context is important. This is a Jane who didn't have a wife and family yet. Also, he had just lost his memories and hadn't remembered he'd been doing it for years at that point. I think Ray Hafner put it best, at some point Jane was going to get bored. That didn't happen in the show, but after Vega's death, he was definitely wary of that lifestyle and it had been shown that he had been leading up to that. As far as the ending is concerned, I'm fine with how the show ended. Though I personally wouldn't have had a problem had it ended with Red John's death. I understand why Heller wanted to focus on Jane moving on from Angela and Charlotte though I don't view Jane as a traditional hero and don't think it necessary that he follow a standard hero's journey.

@@henrypeters5291 neither Jane eventually getting bored of the work, nor his memory loss changes my assertion that meaningful use of abilities was always a drive for him. He fled to Venezuela mostly out of necessity--it's unlikely he formulated much of a plan for his life after killing Red John, especially since the first time he thought he did it he just surrendered and went to jail until he realized there was more work to be done. My point is that who Jane is and what drives him are at odds with what some commenters pine for--the dour, self-annihilating, misanthrope genius archetypes they love in other shows. Nomadic, in need of recuperation, willing to put himself on the line for what he wants? Sure, he's all of those things--what he is *not* is a misanthrope, a burnout, or a stagnating retiree. There are ways to put a fresh spin on the hero's journey if the writer so chooses, but the template was pretty well established by the start of the show--deviating in the ways I criticized wouldn't be artistic liberties, but character betrayal. Darker/sadder/more unresolved story templates matter; they require the proper foundation and meaning, otherwise it's just a lazy author blowing down their house of cards and calling it a conclusion. I don't care how uptight that makes me sound--I can't stand people who assume misery is automatically the more intelligent story ending, it drives me bonkers.

@@tabithaprovan957 I wasn't saying misery was the end all be all. Or that the story would have a dark ending. But comparing this to the Odyssey. The goal was for Odysseus to get home. The goal here was for Jane to kill Red John. We didn't need to see him move on with Lisbon because I think most intelligent viewers would have realized he would have moved on with his life in some form. I get what you are saying. People like to compare Jane to House M.D when aside from their intelligence they are two completely different characters. But if so much of the story is built around Jane's hunt for vengeance then it would be more natural for it to end at that hunt. That's just my two sense.

No he didn't. Abbott knew no one. He could trust no one if he were to root out every one of Red John's cronies. He couldn't know if Jane were another Lorelei. People who don't get that either break all the rules for their friends, fail to understand the corruption at CBI, cannot imagine a character acting with limited information unlike the omniscient viewer, or has some conscious or unconscious bias. Anyone who hated Abbott at one point should figure out which group they belong to.
