Jan Hammer - Crockett's Theme (live by Kebu @ Dynamo)
Музыка
A studio version of this tune is out now on my "Synthesizer Legends - Volume 1" album:
zyxdance.lnk.to/SynthesizerLe...
A live version of this tune is also available on my "Live in Oslo" album:
ZYXDance.lnk.to/LIYi6KIp
I always liked this tune and was inspired when I heard Michael Cassette's version. So for my live performance I made an arrangement that was influenced by both versions, but put my own twist on it. The tune ended my show in Dynamo, Turku, where this video was recorded 5th May 2012. Unfortunately, I only had three camcorders going and the heavy bass drum in the club made the cameras vibrate with each beat. But the feeling was so high in the club that I definitely wanted to upload this particular take!
The song was performed using only analog synthesizers, either played live or sequenced. The performance was recorded line in to one of the cameras. The ambience in the club was recorded using the built-in microphones on two of the remaining cameras and mixed together with the line signal. Some mistakes were replaced with audio from a rehearsal take.
Equipment used in this song: Korg Polysix, Poly 61 (through a SansAmp GT2), Mono/Poly, Micro-preset M500; Roland TR-808, Jomox AirBase99, Juno 60, Alpha Juno 1&2; Touched-by-sound DRM1, Oberheim Matrix 6R, Yamaha RM1x (only for MIDI sequencing), Behringer DDX3216, Lexicon MPX500, as well as a midi patchbay and additional preamps for my mixer. Cameras: Canon HF100 (x2) and HF200.
A big thank you to the amazing audience in Turku and to Turku Synth Club for arranging the gig!

Watched this a TON of times and this is what 'gets me' about this video. The music is PERFECTLY balanced and mixed but, I see the video wobbling and shaking with the bass lines and hits. It is live and has errors in the visuals. This is why I come back week after week. Great and powerful rendition. Additionally. Kebu appears 'in the grove' and if you have ever been there you know what I mean. He takes what Jan Hammer laid out as an outline and forces it to the next level. His mod wheel work and idiomatic playing of the guitar riffs were amazing. Keep in mind this WAS om 2012! Great work! Keep it up! BY THE THIS IS AN EDIT.... The fact that he plays this WHOLE thing 'off the cuff' and live.... he adds to my wish to something as amazing as this. Sequences are GREAT but, his level of play skill is off the charts.

A go to video for me. The "in the groove" aspect of this is off the charts. Totally all about drum sequences and rhythm. What gets me, is this song live has so much drive it hurts your guts. I feel that even listening to this on crappy speakers. i know what it really sounds like and hear that.

Watching/listening to in 2024! This is great.
Miami Vice, Literally a series that was ahead of it's time. What an era. The nostalgia is real man. Been re-watching the entire series these past months, and what a time. Don't think any show can come close too it these days. Sad that the era, is long past. Iconic storyline, themes, instrumentals, characters and so much more. Legendary. Espically with Jan Hammer, and how he nailed it. So glad he got massive credits for the theme, and got chosen for it.
Что в 89 году, когда я услышал эти мелодии, это был шедевр, что в 2023 это пушка!
This guy is a synth genius but the Jan Hammer original had so much feeling and was also technically totally original. That’s a true musical genius.
My god… this is sheer brilliance… unbelievable
Now there's a man who loves what he does. And his synthesizers! Love and respect, I'm a big fan, thank you for many years of great music!

@Aaron Foltz - The funny part about the tambourine story, is that it’s almost true. I was cleaning up my studio, found my tambourine and an acoustic instrument pickup. Oh hell, yeah… you know where THIS is going. 😆 Straight into a half stack. I haven’t seen my wife or dogs, since. 😂 (Yes, this story is actually true. Except for the ‘wife and dogs’ part, but I did scare the hell out of ‘em! 😝)

@Aaron Foltz - I had to go listen to that Kate Bush song. I’ve never heard it before, and I’m old enough to have. It definitely sounds like you could mash them up. Here’s an old mashup, that really works, and I really like. It’s Korn and Taylor Swift, mashing up Coming Undone and Never Getting Back Together. I don’t know why it works so well, but I’m not one to argue with a good thing. If the KZread gods allow it, here’s a link to it: kzread.info/dash/bejne/h3iFm82waZTLkrQ.html

Legend has it the song is still going on!

I love when musicians is totally IN their music.
The '80's movies, the music never dies, the genre is picked up and rediscovered for the generation coming forth. It's that good, you can't fight it, give in to the spine-tingling sound.
I could listen to this 24/7! He’s incredible ❤
This Jan Hammer cover is way better than the original, took this simple theme to higher grounds and new musical worlds while at same time sending any 80s teen back to a skin-burned memory of crocket driving in his car during the famous episode . Way to go Kebu, what a monster performance.

Fantastic performance of a great theme song! Loved the way he played both keyboards at once and behind his back. Remarkable. How can anyone not like this? I guess they don't get it or it's over their heads.
Well as a 1990's FM radio DJ, I think I can answer that! The first thing to note is that the term "DJ" covers a wide spectrum of talent ranges and sophistication. So... : ------------------------------------ A) HIGH LEVEL DJ's In live radio, some of them have a team of lower level DJ's to serve them! But at other types of live events (concerts, raves, etc...), these DJ's are actually artists, much like Jazz musicians that just go with the flow, and feels the vibes of the crowd and music, and carefully operates complex equipment to mirror/vibe with the audience's energy, and transition between beats/tunes seamlessly. And sure some of those transitions are pre-planned, but a lot of them are just spur of the moment music transitions, reactions, and effects bouncing off the audience energy. DJ's at this level ALWAYS operate/adjust very complex-equipment live (equipment that would take you a couple of years to learn!) through pretty complex setttings and setups for varying venues. ------------------------------------ EXAMPLE NOTE: Here's an example of a true-live-DJ artist at work: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hoZ3s8-HfbLXhbw.htmlsi=U9XXOioq2uT5viUw Jan Hammer doing his rendition of the early 1980's Miami Vice "Crockett's theme" and it's... it's... ya: pretty awesome and mind blowing! This guy is definitely burning a few extra calories and brain cells trying to make this work live! His equipment also contains multi-high-data streaming services to a central switch, requiring some unifying networking equipment that would be the equivalent of an entire floor of a medium or large sized corporation! PS: If I'm not mistaken and remembering correctly (when I met him once) I think this guy has either a Master's or PhD in Biochemistry! In my opinion: you can certainly seem him using his extra brain processing power to do his shows. ------------------------------------ B) LOWER LEVEL DJ's Then we get to "lower level newbie" DJ's! Nothing wrong with that: we're all newbies at everything at some time or another! But ya, they "simply" go through their record library, or the stations' music library, and pick out a set of songs that is given to them on a list by someone else. (Not such a simple task because it requires you to know and "feel" multiple multiple many genres of music.) While doing so, if they're any good at this stage, they will pick out some alternate substitions on the list, and suggest it to the main-DJ or broadcaster, but not overwhelm the main-DJ, so they know how to do so, or not do so, depending upon how busy (or irritated!) the main-DJ appears to be during a live broadcast. They also do HUGE amounts of radio live broadcast, or party broadcast control board handling for others, including even in the case of FM broadcasts, manning the phones and incoming calls, and filtering/passing on relevant messages to the main DJ.
Dude... this is probably one of the best live synth performances i've seen...
Keep coming back to this every couple of weeks or so, reminds me of the 80's
