Jamie Metzl on The Portal (with host Eric Weinstein) Ep.

Ойын-сауық

Former National Security analyst turned author Jamie Metzel has written a book called Hacking Darwin. The book attempts to use storytelling to explore where we are as the new era of rewriting our cells and ourselves gets into full swing. Here he sits down with Eric to explore the negatives and positives of our seemingly ineluctable future of God-like power to rewrite biology. Together they discuss the role of story telling and fiction in understanding cutting edge science, the limits of bio-hacking regulation and the rise of mainland China as the outlying superpower of state sponsored experimentation.

I just want to point out that GFP (green fluorescent protein) does not glow in the dark. It is a fluorescent protein which means it needs an excitation (around 395 nm) and will then emit light as a result (around 475 nm). Most pop culture gets this wrong. There are of course other systems that allow for glow in the dark attributes, but as far as I know all need a substrate (like luciferase) but this isn't fluorescence but bioluminescence. Some bioluminescence can be heterologously achieved in plants and other organisms, but it's harder than just producing one heterologous gene. Great podcast anyway! I just wanted to make a small correction as I didn't see anyone talking about it in the comments.

"We have that portal, it's called conversation, and we can't afford to become post-modernists." I think this is the most powerful message in the entire episode. We're witnessing the death of conversation, and conversation is beset from many sides, whether it be through post-modernists muddling the waters or radicals poisoning the wells. We need to restore it in order to at least have a chance to survive.

Or is Eric going to keep self-censoring for fear of reprisal by the psychopaths trying to morph our society into a bunch of lunatics (as he indicated on Lex’s podcast)? @ we are done. This is a sentiment Tim Dillon shares. It’s pretty obvious we’re done. There’s no way we can escape what’s coming. The public is dumbed down to the truth but rabid in their frivolous nonsense beliefs, beliefs that are inconsequential to the bigger picture. I mean just click on Twitter it’s enough to make you queasy, infighting about literal rubbish and the manufactured problems the elites have tossed in front of us to distract us, like a cat to yarn. The elites have gamed this out for nearly 20 years and have been playing the long game since the financial crash of 08, they’ve put billions of dollars into this new normal. They don’t even hide it anymore major world leaders speaking about the “Great Reset” and getting caught with the book by Klaus Schwab on their tables in zoom calls. It’s over, the silicon future they want doesn’t include us the proletariat. My desire for self preservation tells me that we can find a way, but this isn’t a movie, we outnumber them but I’m not sure it’s possible to mobilize people which is by design

For me, one of the best conversations for the entire year. And now the drum roll of irony bursts forth. If I recall your intro, this conversation happened about a year ago. But, it seems like a hundred years ago because within weeks of this conversation Covid explodes in China and our world has been turned topsy turvy, upside down and inside out. This was an extraordinary fascinating talk and the implications for our present day Covid world are still being defined. I would encourage Eric to have a similar but shorter conversation with Metzel now with 1/2 the focus on what has changed in his view since Covid and the other half of his consideration given over to where we are going in the current Covid world. Amazing.

Not sure about that. Consider 1) that we may select ourselves into a state that makes us more adaptable to multiple environments over all. Many species have evolved along these lines already, humans included. 2) If we manage to establish independent colonies off-world, this concern may disappear completely. Hell in that scenario we will likely fracture into different species entirely. Guess it depends entirely on the time line of things. I also think we shouldn't be leaning too heavily into the practice of gene editing until we've truly mastered our understanding of genetics in relation to the rest of biology/psychology and we are scarily far off that given the speed at which it seems we are beginning to apply these technologies.. hmm Perhaps we are just fucked..

It seems that there is always a point when two clever American intellectuals talk long enough to get around to opining about the U.K. and Brexit, This happened at about 1.43 on the video. At which point one of them says something completely moronic. No, it isn’t about toast and the EU regulations about toasters or anything else like that. It’s about the real stuff of politics: class interests and national interests and people that have different but perfectly rational differences about those matters. We’ll have to come back in ten years time to talk about which side was right about those matters. Meanwhile, Jamie Metzl hasn’t a clue.

Just to clarify these misconceptions propagated by the gated institutions Brexit was NOT about : 1/ Racism 2/ 'Little Englanders' wanting an empire 3/ EU trade regulations Brexit WAS about: Not accepting unaccountable power as a favourable political structure was my primary reason. Taking back control of UK laws was the verdict of the people, as highlighted in Lord Ashcroft's polling data. lordashcroftpolls.com/2016/06/how-the-united-kingdom-voted-and-why/ The law makers in the EU are not elected by plebiscite, neither can they be removed by said democratic vote. They are also the ONLY people who can initiate new laws. They are also anointed ( for example, 'elected' by the EU representative Council with NO other candidate options). This manifests itself into a dictatorship by any other means, frankly.

@@gordonlinton3555 Hear, hear, sir. The infantilization of thought and beliefs around Brexit as well as many other topics is the sad triumph of an uninterested media beholden like a slave to social media and it's "likes" - the industrial scale and practice of virtue signaling which is now the primary mode of interaction for most people today. Sad, then - that thinkers like the one here and even more prominent/influential ones have such a lax and shabby understanding of critical movements like Brexit. A satirical reference to the causes of unsatisfactory toast becomes the strawman reference to "other people's" support for Brexit - but is really a display of his own ignorance on the topic in employing such a trite example.

1:49:00 but the reason nature hasnt "manged" to evolve immortality, is not because its impossible, but because wild natural selection did NOT require individual immortality of a species. All that natural evolution does, is ensure that 1 individual procreates to at least 2 offspring, thus growing the population. That's it. Immortality has nothing to do with that, once a species has procreated more offspring than 1, it is "fair game" for it to die of imperfections, degenerations or disease. Natural selection goes "hands off" at that point, since the procreation already occured. So just because we dont see immortal creatures "naturally", has nothing to do with it being impossible or not. In many cases, being short-lived BUT procreating A LOT (like insect hives), is in fact shown to be preferentially selected by nature. As it grows the species population faster than a slower method. So immortality just isnt a driven direction that evolution goes towards. It's something WE as self-aware beings have to invent for ourselves. I think it is entirely possible (except death via injuries etc), to eliminate old age. Nothing in nature prevents it. It's just that it doesnt give us the blueprint for it, because nature doesnt "care" about striving towards immortality. It is irrelevant, as long as the species procreates before it dies.

I like your point but the law of statistical entropy absolutely prevents it. Errors will eventually accrue in the 'error correcting mechanisms' sustaining life and the system will degenerate into chaos. This is inevitable. True immortality is impossible. That being said even if you could achieve something analogous to it biologically , entropy is at work in other domains at well. In the space of ideas, for example. In politics (and therefore war). In the systems managing our nuclear weapons. A self-imposed (non-biological) end would also be inevitable given enough time. For example, even if AI is initially benevolent, given enough time it may not remain so. If that entropy doesn't get us, psychological entropy will. Or the heat death of the universe (yet another form of entropy). To say nothing of other existential threats (meteors, global warming etc.). There may also be an issue with the notion of 'we'. Given enough time we may simply cease to identify as humans. We may decide that life is not worth living- once we are able to rid ourselves of our existence bias, as has been written about elsewhere. TL:DR nothing can last forever (for a variety of reasons)

Thank you both very much for the conversation! It is so interesting to hear Jamie interpret the movie Gataca-his take away that the guy had to pull tricks to get his dream and should be arrested is so sad to me. The movie can be seen it a completely different way. The man wasn’t genetically upgraded but with very very hard work he was able to see his dream and prove to his genetically upgraded brother that this unaltered “flawed” person could do more than a genetically upgraded person can because when you tell someone what their limits are, you are just putting them in a box they will not strive to get out of. The unaltered man in the end if I remember right, out competes the altered man and then saves his life in this swimming contest. This movie to me, shows people will always try to put you in a box and tell you are limited to that and so few actually realize that those people are lying to you. We are capable of so much if we don’t save energy to the way home. Give it all you got till there is nothing left and then maybe your automatic functions will kick in. David Goggins inspiration without the cussing
