that happened to Gary. I remember his last season. Complete liability. He had built up enough respect and appreciation that most fans (and the manager) didnt have too much of a go at him. But the writing was on the wall.

It’s funny, and I don’t know why but I got more emotional during Jamies last game than I did during Stevies. Two things I will always remember, him getting the ball, the crowd telling him to shoot and he actually took the shot and it hit the woodwork. It probably would have been the best goal he ever scored and only his seventh or eighth in 17 years. I also remember at the end of the match the slow solemn you’ll never walk alone that sprang up before the whistle. It was just the perfect lament for an awesome player who loved everything about Liverpool. I’m pretty sure in his biography he even says that there was no contract negotiations he would go in and sign whatever was put in front of him because he didn’t want to play for anyone else because to him who was bigger than Liverpool. I’m sure Gary was the exact same

Gary was a bit unfortunate. In the 06/07 season that Man Utd won their first Title for a while Gary was the RB and the back four was faultless. Then he got injured, never fully recovered and the back 4 was always missing a Top RB. Wes did OK but whenever people mention the world class defenders in that period they mention Rio, Vidic, Evra. Never the right back cause Gary got injured just as it was all taking off.

Yeh if the two teams from 08/09 and 13/14 were combined that would have been perfect. Didnt quite come together. @@SH-lt4nl I think the best I saw was with Alonso and Masharano as a midfield two. Then Gerrard playing as the number 10 behind Torres. That was such a balanced and perfect central Spine. All it needed was two world class wingers like Sterling, Salah or Mane. It was perfect for Gerrard. Then if you had Klopp motivating them all that would be a great side. Liverpool are a great side now but there are still players from that era I think are above the current team like Alonso, Gerrard as the 10, Carra as the organizer and leader at the back. Imagine a defensive two of Carra and Van Dijk. Sometimes sides get a group of players come through at the same time, Liverpool have been unfortunate over the premier league years that it didnt quite come together at the right time.

Although I think that is hyperbole, I do think there is a bit of truth in it. Ironically, the thing that separates him from the others you mention is what you've praised him for (and one of the reasons hyypia was so good). He had a brilliant mind for the game. "The first yard is in your head" is something you always heard with sami, and although carra wasn't as positionally good, he was tactically just as good if not better. Also, as the current team is showing, you can make up for a lot with pure work ethic, and thats something he had (the difference with his successor in sakho has never been so stark). Also, his strength was also his weakness. Because he played so many positions, he had to learn the game in lots of different ways and couldn't specialise in one area like a lot of players get to.

Mmm. Is this what you also say to women who are doctors, teachers, researchers, scientists and astronauts? Such a backhanded compliment to say one woman is good enough but the others aren't. Plenty of crap blokes, just look at Boris in Corona going around shaking hands with sick people on a hospital ward who are infected and then shaking hands with doctors and other staff, he was risking killing the medics by being as thick as pig sh1t and showing off about it too.
