What is Love Actually (2003) about?
Love Actually is a 2003 Christmas romantic comedy film written and directed by Richard Curtis. It features an ensemble cast, composed predominantly of British actors, many of whom had worked with Curtis in previous film and television projects. The screenplay delves into different aspects of love as shown through 10 separate stories involving a variety of individuals, many of whom are shown to be interlinked as the plot progresses. The story begins five weeks before Christmas and is played out in a weekly countdown until the holiday, followed by an epilogue that takes place one month later. The film stars Hugh Grant, Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, Liam Neeson, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Colin Firth, Keira Knightley, Laura Linney, Bill Nighy and Martin Freeman.

@anneisabelle001 Yes, Jamie's whole "just checking, cos it's Christmas" thing. Now, twenty years after the film release, I realise he could have started writing to Aurelia. Or telephoning! Just showing up randomly is a tricky move. As for the public bit, I did cringe and have to look away at the very un-English, face planting with tongue action in full view of restaurant patrons and Aurelia's father 😳

Not to undermine the fabulous writing and great acting, but I can’t imagine a proposal from Colin Firth would make me cringe regardless.
Besides revealing that she learned his language, I also love her answering in English because he's the only other person in the room who speaks English, so he learns her answer before everyone else learns it.
This is FLAT OUT the most beautiful declaration of love and marriage proposal EVER, EVER!
This relationship is symbolic of “Love is a universal language”. Two people who don’t understand each other verbally but their love understands each other stronger than any words can express

For those that don't know, she is an amazing singer.. she represented Portugal in Euro vision and did very well.
This was basically my parents when they met, lol. My dad is American and my mom is French. Neither could speak each other's native language. Somehow, they fell in love, mom learned English and dad failed horribly learning French. They made it work and got married ❤.
This is by far the best story I’ve ever seen! I never get tired of watching it!

Is it just me, or did they make Lúcia Moniz (Aurelia) look significantly older than her real-life 27 years? I can't believe it's the same woman who only 7 years prior was breaking hearts all over Europe when she sang for Portugal in the 1996 Eurovision Song Contest..... Shame not to include their part at the airport where upon first meeting his friends she teases that “Jamie's friends are so good looking! He never tells me this. I think, maybe now I have made the wrong choice? Picked wrong Englishman?” and Jamie replies “She can't speak English properly, she doesn't know what she's saying.” 😂❤

I'm Brazilian, this language isn't Spanish, it's Portuguese from Portugal, now the reason for its use in the film I don't know

I'm just not into the actress, but the love story is nice. The betrayal by the brother shouldn't have been included though.

Agreed and there was some more dialogue with her speaking Portuguese and him speaking English (in the cottage) that they ought to have included.

@@dumfriesspearhead7398... except that he didn't ("end up in Portugal") because the cottage was in France so it was the reason he was in France. I've always assumed the final scenes were also in France - admittedly in an area with lots of Portuguese immigrants. It's a stretch that he could find her even there (although he knew where he dropped her off) and an even bigger stretch for him to find her in another country only a few weeks later.
