James Williamson of The Stooges | Guitar Moves Interview
Музыка
The elusive and impossibly influential guitarist made Iggy and The Stooges’s world-changing “Raw Power” LP and some of Iggy’s finest solo recordings before disappearing for decades and reappearing for the Stooges final touring run. Williamson shows Sweeney the keys to savagery: “Search and Destroy” and “Gimme Danger”. Historic action here.
Original Air Date: May 14, 2013
Matt Sweeney, host of Guitar Moves, is an NYC based producer (Joanna Sternberg “I’ve Got Me”) and composer (Superwolves, Chavez, Red Dead Redemption 2). His guitar playing can be heard on records by Adele, Johnny Cash, Endless Boogie, Neil Diamond, Cat Stevens, The Desert Sessions, Iggy Pop, Tinariwen.

Don't be fooled, kids. James Williamson might look like a retired electronics engineer, but the reality is that he's the Darth Vader of electric guitar; the Sith Lord of rock 'n roll.

The funny thing was, he was at Cal Poly Pomona working on his degree and I was at Harvey Mudd doing likewise at the same time (79-80 - him 79-82 or thereabouts with some breaks. Man, had I known.. Also for what I wanted (being a EE ) Cal Poly would have been the better choice. But I just had a glance at their BSEE syllabus - pretty freaking stiff, and the chemistry and calculus II and III are NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED!!! Mr. Williamson is gangsta for doing all the stuff he's done in life.

@@silasmarner7586 Yes! Harvey Mudd is totally legit. I have a friend that graduated from there. He's a genius engineer.
The Stooges played my high school in 71 in Windsor Ontario Canada. :-) Peace

I love seeing Matt geek out when playing a famous riff with the person that wrote it. Must be an amazing feeling! Also, I can't wait until the Ace Frehley episode!
This was always my favorite. Super sweet the way both of them are nervous at the start (Matt for obvious reasons, James,I guess, wondering why anyone would still care). I bet that ‘you’re good’ felt pretty awesome.
My god this is fantastic. When I discovered The Stooges I was 19 and had just begun teaching myself guitar. Gimme Danger and Search and Destroy smashing my fingers on my acoustic. When I was buying my electric, Search and Destroy was the first riff I tried. There might've been better guitars or amps for me, but with the power that song required suddenly in the palm of my hands I bought it on the spot. Legendary musician.
It's a song etched ,no burned in my head forever. UMass radio wmua...early 80s. Very cool session.

Great to see this back on KZread after it was removed a while back. Awesome. 🤘
"Thank you for making my life... better." Yes. Exactly! Stooges forever.
Seeing Matt grinning from ear to ear is priceless!
Guitar Moves is one of THE coolest guitar channels on KZreads!
The excitement on Matt's face as they play together is the best part about this. Pure genuine happiness.
So glad this got put back up again. I have my more well known favourite guitarists but James WIlliamson is right up there for me, simply for the Raw Power album. I just can't get enough of his classic rock n roll/proto punk hybrid style of playing. So many great riffs and licks on that album
Matt was close to shed a tear at the end. So do I !!! Viva la música!!!!
Keep em coming!
so happy you're uploading all of them again ❤
I’m glad these are being reuploaded I was just looking for the billy gibbons episode
This is epic man!!
Glad this is back!!
Glad this is coming back, dude. Excited for the new eps.

So excited and happy for you dude! I'm loving seeing all these again and I can't wait to get some new insights and cool stories in the future. Rock on!
Love James Williamson! Great episode!!
my fav guitarist. but. way above my head..i m still on the first 2 lp s..playing that on my guitar
james is the reason i wanted a LPC, but also the one who made me want to be more creative.
James playing that burst Custom! Hell yes. I used to listen to the isolated track of S&D just for James' guitar.
This made my day and night! You can tell Matt is stoked. I got my Fender Squire and I'm ready!!!
Smiles for miles watching this episode, grew up loving the stooges and felt the same fan boy enthusiasm as Matt , watching this, freaking awesome 👍
Oooh bud. This is beautiful.
I like that he said Muffle.

Amazeballz Matt
Had a nice chat with him in austin once. Its always scary to meet an Icon. What a grounded cool dude. ❤
goosebumps so massive n hard i nearly cried
As essential and underrated in rock n' roll history like Mick Taylor
James solos need to jump about five times louder than normal - that's RAW POWER!!
Matt for the love of god, do a video with Mike Watt❤️🔥❤️🔥
How does this channel only have around 23k subscribers?
That was rad! And love Fantasy studios. Are they back open again, I hope so!
What James did not elaborate on is he fought for the great Asheton bros. to be back in the band, or he’s out, so Iggy and the Management in the end relented.. Another trivia tidbit is finding out that Johnny Marr is heavily influenced by James’ playing.. Johnny was in a band doing Stooges covers before he got big doing jangle-pop for his later band that hit it big in the 80’s..

It's great because once you hear Johnny Marr talk about him, you can really hear the influence James Williamson on songs like The Queen is Dead.

Welcome back Matt. Chuck Bryant says hi. Come back Matt, we neeeeeed you Matt.
james' guitar tone tho!!!
What tha !😮 how did you get this put together ? This is the Main Man !!
Fuck goddamn this was heavy. I need a nap now.
The coolest. This is the coolest.
Best show ever. Can’t wait till we get to the kurt vile and courtney barnett episode I liked the Jake bugg one too.
When I was 13 I bought Raw Power, becaues the older cool kids were all "stooges stooges blah blah". I put it on, went "eh" and promptly lost it. Four years later I heard "Search and Destroy" on the radio, and I was like "I know this song! How can I know this song and have forgotten it, when the guitar is so sweet?" Of course, this was in the late 90s, but the point is that sometimes you're just not ready for the raw power.
100% the greatest.

Great music from Great Britain! 😈
Cool
Raw power can kill a Man “. ❤
Fuck yeah
Fuck yeah dude!
ron asheton the godlike guitar player. i like that.
That's a day made
P.S. Man you just save my Hide , My Fingernail is shot to pieces .. couldn't figure what to do THANK YOU !.. I can put a fake fingernail on !!!!
13:00 speaking for all of us
This guy looks like your dad but when he was young he looked like keith richards effortlessly ( at the time everyone tried to look like keef) and wrote the best Iggy stuff.
Have you interviewed Albini yet? Ask him if you can interview Roland from Big Black, he keeps him in the basement.
FUCKING MORE AND GET THE ARCHIVE BACK UP SO I CAN BINGE.
Kill City is where it's at
I often wonder what james's influences were at the time of raw power ?
L E G E N D 🎸
added footage not in original. Ron’s bass playing on Raw Power album is the tip top of all time. Dave Alexander too, firing Dave, they got what they deserved for a minute. All those fill ins were NOT STOOGES. James wrote amazing stuff, it would not be what it is without Ron & Scott. Re-Licked is very good too. Guitar driven, not guitar dominant tho, it’s incredible James remembered what he was going for. However Kill City is weak, we know what James & Ig sound like without Ron & Scott.
Was this video from a few years ago?
The only guy I can think of who "one upped" Keith Richards, for a whole bunch of reasons.
Still Punk as ever
Challenge: Brian Egeness
Frusciante on a new episode maybehaps?
JW is 1000x cooler than your favorite guitar player
People getting old is so hilarious 😐
This guy isn't good at all. Iggy Pop reminds me of "Stuart" from Mad TV " Look what I can do!" 😂
Iggy's last name is not really pop and his first name is not really iggy? Think should give you something nice to think about today, but don't think about it to long? Also you can't really iggy a pop, but you can pop an iggy.
