I love that this references Kirk's time on the Farragut. Many people who started watching Star Trek with the Abrams-verse movies didn't realize that initially Kirk had a long career before getting the Enterprise, instead of getting her straight out of the Academy. This included his inital term as a junior officer on the same USS Farragut culminating with being tactical officer, second officer on the USS Republic, Second Officer on the USS THresher, Chief Engineer on USS Aeolus, Detachment commander on Federation colony Shad VII during amid reports of possible Klingon incursions, and a previous First Officer stint on the USS Eagle.

Exactly. I actually thought it was a huge mistake of the films to jump straight into the whole - way too young! - crew on The Enterprise. We saw Kirk having to take command in the first film. Fine. But it would have been more realistic to have him on the Farragut in Into Darkness, and over the course of that film and the next film, he puts the band back together. Plus Chekov, who shouldn't have shown up until the 3rd film. The producers had no patience, and no faith in the audience, so we got films that were derivative and shallow, instead of actually fulfilling the goal of prequel: show us stuff about the characters we love we haven't seen before! (Yes, 2009 did this a little with the Starfleet Academy sequence which was , like, 10 minutes of the film.)

It's a damn shame Sam going to die in TOS, because he's turning out to be an excellent character, he's basically a nerdy version of Kirk but still awesome, the relationship between he and his brother is touching yet tragic in hindsight considering what happened to him. I give the props to the people behind the scenes props for making a minor and largely obscure character greater exposure and developing him into something more.

It's ironic that Sam, as the older brother and their father's namesake, was probably the one James felt he had to compete with to win his father's approval. Which likely motivated the ambition and success that his brother now resents.

But again it doesn't really matter, it's a great show! All of them are, but this one is really a great storyline. I hope they run it for as long as possible. Captain as position, not Captain as service rank. The two are different, even in Original Series. For example, we see Spock wearing full Commander stripes when he serves on the Enterprise Bridge, and yet both times his service record was read off in court, it said his service rank was Lieutenant Commander. Also, Deep Space Nine further confirms that no matter what one's actual rank was, you still call them "Captain" when they are in command. In this case, referring to Jadzia Dax when she was Lieutenant Commander. Even Ensign Nog would be called "Captain" if he had to take command. But as Chief O'Brien so eloquently put it, by the time Nog took command, there would be no one left to call him anything :P

We know so little about George Kirk Sr. (Besides his death in the Kelvin Timeline and a few references from time to time). I’d be interested if we got a prequel film that goes over Kirk’s life on the Kelvin before James and Sam (that is if Hemsworth is up to come back to Trek after over a decade on Marvel).
It's hard thing to do but he's got to learn to be happy with his life and not care that his dad's not happy with where his career is.

I know that it will never happen, but my dream story on SNW would be a throwback. Jim Kirk, a Lieutenant on the Farragut, when it’s attacked by the cloud creature from Tycho IV. Jim is forced to take command when the Captain (Garrovick) and nearly 2/3 of the crew are killed. It’s based on the original series episode called “Obsession”.

he mentions in the clip( 1:00 ) that it's not official yet, since he still needs to train his replacement(as tactical officer IIRC), which will take a few months. once said training is complete and he's *officially* made XO, he'll likely get a Lieutenant Commander stripe
0:55 *Wow,* "what" would have been a better response. Seemed like such a nice meeting in the transporter room, to turn into this brother rivalry? It really doesn't make any sense. As Sam went into a very *DEEP* science training as JT went the path of Starfleet Command. It makes no sense that their would be any *Brotherly* rivalry. But again it doesn't really matter, it's a great show! All of them are, but this one is really a great storyline. I hope they run it for as long as possible. This Kirk’s waggling eyebrows are giving serious Jim Carrey vibes.
The actor playing James Kirk seems a bit older based on cannon... from what I understand, Kirk became a lieutenant on the Farragut at age 21 and first office by 26... Paul Wesley is 41.. and doesn't look the part of a young, ambitions Kirk, who became captain of the Enterprise by age 32

I’m disappointed in ST:SNW as it promised to go back to the beginning, to be what Star Trek was all about. What happened? Where is the bold Science Fiction? Where are the moral tales about humanity? Where is the moral and political/social comment? The Orville has grasped this perfectly! Why do we have the intro ‘Previously on…’ when it was supposed to be episodic? One of my biggest gripes of the whole franchise is why has the federation adopted the Enterprise’s uniform badge, when in fact each ship had a different insignia on their respective uniforms?
