James R. Barker - Fantastic Horn Blast!
While we wait during the lull between the 2019 and 2020 shipping seasons, here is another video from the archives... this time showing a fan-favorite with the James R. Barker arriving in Duluth, Minnesota on September 13, 2017. Those who are already familiar with the Barker are aware of her great dual horn setup, somewhat similar to the Joseph L. Block I featured here a few days ago... but with a different tone. I was in the right spot to get the full blast from the Barker's horn for this video. If you listen closely, you can also hear some of the narration from the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center from across the shipping canal. Even the lady doing the narration remarks that the James Barker is her favorite ship, due to her horn!
(Note: With some of these "flashback" videos, the footage may have been previously uploaded to this channel, but often with music overlaid on it. At the time, I used music to hide the excessive wind noise picked up by the cheap microphone I had. I have since found ways to edit the audio to reduce the wind noise to a more tolerable level, even if it still doesn't sound perfect. Like many viewers, I prefer natural sounds over music, so I hope this re-upload is an improvement. Also, if some of my video skills seem a little more crude with this older footage, it's because I was still trying to figure out how to record these ships in action. Indeed, I still am learning!)

It’s Barker Not Baker.
EVERY TIME I HEAR THE "" BARKERS BARK "" I THINK OF ALL THOSE THAT HAVE LOST THEIR LIVES SAILING OUR GREAT LAKES ........... SHE SPEAKS FOR THOSE SAILORS AND THEIR FAMILIES ...... A MOURNFUL CRY
How can anyone not love that horn?! And how can it be the only one voiced like that when there are what, 12 more 1000-footers out there?

I feel each of the 1000 footer's have their own personality, Paul R Tregurtha is the biggest ship on the lakes, presque isle is the only 1000 foot tug/ barge combo, the Edwin H Gott, when built, had the most powerful diesel engines on the great lakes(she lost that title when she was re-engined in 2011) and Stewart J Cort is not only the 1st of the 1000 footer's, but also the only one with a bridge at the bow instead of the stern. The James r Barker is the only ship on the entire lakes with this exact horn tone.

It maybe a bit too loud for for you to installed that horn into your car because you're gonna give everyone's attention if you blast that horn all around them especially in traffic and that's going to scare the heck out of them.

That's quite the horn - sounds like a symphony

WOAH THAT WAS EPIC
I remember one person said in a boat group, coming from a music standpoint the first horn is in the key of D and the seond horn combind the first will give it the Key of F Minor.

The two tones of Barker's horn are Bb down to Eb. It's a perfect fifth, not a major or minor chord.
My moped needs a horn like this

All of your videos are great; I try to watch them all. This one is an award winner, though. I have the Barker's horn as my ringtone, but it doesn't sound THIS good. Thanks for uploading this.

How deep is that channel?
@1Long2Short

It's maintained to have a depth of 28 feet below the low water level, which is deep enough to allow passage of the lake carriers and salt water ships.

It was the set of horns on the lift bridge
Why are there two different blasts do they mean something
@1Long2Short
3 жыл бұрын
The first sequence of the one long, two short blasts is from the ship. The second sequence of one long, two short blasts is from the Aerial Lift Bridge that the ship passes underneath. It's just a friendly exchange of salutes, meant more as a greeting than anything else. Plus, it entertains the tourists!
Do the captain's whistles only happen during specific hours...daylight...
@1Long2Short

There are no set rules. While many ships will not salute at night, some still do. The other night I heard one blast it's horn at 2:30am!
Someone show this to Hans Zimmer right now
It sounds like the William g Mathers horn but deeper.
