⚓️Captain BLASTS Big Crowd! Ship James R. Barker arrives in Duluth, MN
Ойын-сауық
The 1004 foot ship James R. Barker blasted an incredibly loud master salute as it arrived from Lake Superior in Duluth, MN. I was able to capture the exciting atmosphere by the Lift Bridge and with the crowd as I set the stage for this awesome ship to arrive. Also, a few shoutouts to boat friends that approached me before recording this video.

Thom, first off, my condolences to your wife’s aunt! The hotels and motels are very expensive right now because all the kids are out of school and it’s peak time for good weather.

Great video, great ships horn! How are you doing your video? So many out there do such a terrible job with audio wind noise while standing in a slight breeze, but I rarely any hear wind noise on your videos, even though you appear to be standing in Gail force winds at times.

There have been a few questions about the boat and bridge signal horns when the boats are entering and leaving the Port of Duluth. In most cases, once radio communication with the bridge has been established, use of the boat and bridge sound signals are not necessary and operation of the sound signals is left up to the captains. Often, boats will not use the loud horns after dark as a courtesy to city residents. So, most often when you hear the customary whistle/horn-blowing sequence of "long-short-short" it is a friendly salute to the Port of Duluth from the ship captain and is responded to by the lift bridge operator with the same sequence. The Master Salute is an upgraded more formal whistle/horn salute. That is “long-long-long-short-short.” While the famous sound may be a courtesy, it has long been part of the nautical tradition of this great inland sea port.
