I'm retired and own my own home. I've no mortgage, no debt, reasonably well off, and I'm absolutely gobsmacked by this budget. I should be happy, but I have a social conscience and I'm disgusted.

Hear, hear. I'm a middle aged homeowner myself, although there are other aspects of my life that aren't so great. Nevertheless, the state of the nation, and the way it impacts on the prospects and lifestyle of the young people coming up is appalling in my view. Some of them working two jobs and still just treading water. Fiddling with the tax system isn't going to fix the key problems in this country.

It won’t be a case of political amnesia. Everyone on more then the national average will not want to lose that money, and will simply become a Tory voter to keep it if they weren’t already. Everyone underneath that should in theory vote labour, but there’s quite a lot of idiots who believe the Tory’s are somehow shielding the country from immigrants and bad people. I’d say it’s a joke, but it’s not even close to funny.

It's the crux of the issue and raises a very serious point, though. The government should be taking those thousands of pounds and using it to fund public services that help us all. A lot of very wealthy people are gagging to pay a bit more but the government won't let them.

And there is a limit to how many british apple pies you can buy in a year. The car (if any) is likely to be imported - though we hope for more electrics from Newcastle.

What worries me is that the theory of “trickle down economics” was discredited decades ago as a method of economic stimulation - both from an academic perspective and a practical perspective. Academically there are so many flaws in the model, specifically the lack of accounting for human nature and realistically, ever country that has adopted this has failed to achieve any economic growth. Either the government are so incompetent that they genuinely believe that this will grow the economy or, as is more likely, they’ve now given up on even pretending to care about the working class and are blatantly making the rich richer

Please can you give a referenced example of "trickle down economics" and show this list of countries where it has "failed to achieve any economic growth" ? Seriously just find one reputable economist that argues for "Trickle Down Economics" and what these policies would look like? If you seriously want to look at practical, real life effects of low tax the data is there. There are numerous examples of tax rates being dropped and yet tax revenue* increase, known as the laffer curve in economics. It is exactly what happened under thatcher in the 80s. I agree that the government is incompetent, and seem incapable of looking at evidence, but it is no wonder they dont bother when the voters (such as yourself) are equally ignorant to the facts and instead peddle the exhausted beliefs that have been refuted for nearly a century.

@@CCISolitude probably most of them, but don't forget that the income tax cut benefits MPs' too. MPs' get a basic salary of £84k and change, and most, if not all, have several advisory jobs with multinational companies, being paid hundreds of thousand of pounds. The writing has been on the wall all this year, they know they are going to lose the next election, and are loading the UK up with so much debt that the next government will have to raise taxes just to try and keep up with the repayments, meanwhile they will be in opposition, attacking every decision and trying to convince the country that things would have been better if they were still in government, hoping to convince enouigh people to vote them back in to power in 7 years time. The crazy thing is, they will probably succeed, and then the great sell-out will continue.

Thank you James - why one wonders is nobody getting angry - if I still lived in Britain I would be livid.

This mini budget would be steaped in unfairness most times, but during a cost of living crisis where a large percentage of citizens are struggling to pay for the essentials, this makes it completely grotesque. Because most people aren't aware of the global system that's exploited by (particularly) the UK, where people can set up shell companies and move it around, completely hidden from any scrutiny. Whether it be shell companies or offshore accounts, the idea is to make/steal the money in any given territory then move it offshore. To so many people who live in the real world, they're too busy trying to feed themselves/pay their bills and assume that things will get better at some point. And others simply assume that it won't stop and that's their lot in life - to crawl on the floor and hope these charlatans throw some scraps from their table. So, of course, as you stated - the money goes away and never comes back.

Brexit has ruined my retirement too. I had planned for years to buy a campervan and tour Europe for. Couple of years. Now I have to return every 3 months. 😡

When you give poor people a bit more money, they spend it, which helps the economy. When you give rich people more money, they stash it, because they don't need to spend it, so nothing trickles down.

No sign whatever of the £1200 in our couple where one of us works and we are deep into our fifties and one of us is on PIP. Think about how much it has been spoken of, and what’s been said. ZERO received. Oh hang on, ‘levelling up’ happened…our energy direct debits have been unilaterally levelled up to equal our mortgage payments, by our energy supplier Octopus. That is three time what they were just 6 months ago.

The bankers in the UK must be geniuses. How to they consistently get rewarded for the economic carnage they create for the average Joe? What a system.

Cost of living crisis, climate crisis, national health service funding crisis, unaffordable housing, shortage of social care, lack of post Brexit trade deals etc, etc, etc. This budget does nothing for any important issue facing the country.

I’m in the Highlands of Scotland, 30 miles from a ski resort. It is one of the colder parts of these islands. We didn’t have a heatwave in summer, maybe 28c on the hottest day. I got that email yesterday. My gas and electric is going up from 1st Oct to £2000 a year. Last year it was £870. I’ve got all the LED bulbs. I’ve doubled my loft insulation. I’m frugal with the hot water and central heating. But here we are….

Its absurd than anyone in 2022 can argue that Trickle Down Economics actually works(as described that is) when we have decades of evidence to show it does not and only increases inequality by perpetually extracted Wealth upwards. But that one of the most obscene Trickle Down budgets i can remember in my lifetime could actually be put into practice by a Government today during one (if not the worst) Cost of Tories Crises i can remember.

@@JB27888 USA, Italy are a little over 8% and Germany is just below, while Australia is something like 6% iirc. The UK around 10%. The UK isn’t doing well. The pound dropping in value after today’s announcement could also inflation will increase even more.

I'm one of those pensioners that have fallen foul of the ridiculous 2 tier pension payment system. I know that I have paid a heap load of more tax etc during my working life than some people 3 years younger than me - BUT, they are getting £40 per week MORE THAN ME. WHY??? If the government were to equal out the payment system so that ALL pensioners get the same basic rate, then guess what, the lowest paid in our society would be £160 better off each month ..... can you imagine what that would achieve for the poverty level in this country?? I'm really pssssd off with this government now - - and I voted for them.

I'm a care/support worker and don't even get the national minimum hourly pay for doing a sleepover at work, I use to but this was reduced by the government years ago. The national minimum wage is simply a lie. I earn around £270 a month less than I did 5 years ago, so much for helping key workers

The problem is that people hope that one day they will be a high earner. They see high tax rates as a tax on their dreams ( regardless of how unlikely it is that they will ever earn 150k). That, unfortunately, is the psychology of it. The same psychology that leads people to buy lottery tickets or squander money on other types of gambling.

A few thoughts as a man in his 30s (company director, home owner, decent income) - Tax free allowance for income tax should be £20,000 (roughly full time earnings on min living wage per year) in addition to that, VAT should be staggered. Ultra luxury goods should be taxed 40% for example, cars over £100k, clothes over £1000 etc. 40% tax threshold should move to £80k to promote spending by the aspirational.

I never have gave my vote to Tories. Never will. They take your soul hope and sprit away. Their ideology is brutal, callous and evil. They have no shame and enjoy what they do. We do not have capitalism what we have is corporatism, humongous greed out of control. All the workers have to join or march with the unions demand, take back power. Next on the line is bonfire off workers rights. Tories intend to reduce them or take them away altogether. The unions are our last resort and we have to back them 100 percent. Gravely sad 2022 we have no where or no one fighting our corner. Thank goodness for the unions their return is well overdue.

In many ways I respect it - they are quite possibly the most honestly (openly) dishonest government this country has ever had. It’s kind of refreshing - at the next election, no voter can say they were duped and didn’t know what they are voting for, it’s completely transparent.

Well, you know what they say about sunday dinners: One man's sunday dinner is another woman's sunday wasted! lol. Yeah, I know it probably seems crass to make a joke about it but at this point I'd rather have a giggle than a weep. We'll all be crying soon enough as it is. Hopefully the last laugh will be on us when the pirates get voted out. :D

I'm an expat living in Australia under a new Labour Government, who I voted for only a few months ago...they have just rolled out the same mindless trickle down tax policy! It's very, very disappointing!

Surely this action will go down in history as one of the most disgraceful misjudgments ever. And Kwarteng laughs.

"Within months of [Antony Barber's] budget the chancellor was forced to float the pound, which led to a sharp decrease in its value and huge inflationary pressure on the economy, which failed to grow in the way his tax-cutting measures had been intended to stimulate." [Guardian, 23/9/22] Most likely, Truss et al are planning a bubble for long enough to get successful figures to present at an election and then we get another 5 years of austerity and vampenomics.

@@agt155 Agreed. It's a relatively small amount (about £2bn a year) in the whole package reducing tax income by £20, 27, 31, 39, 45bn over the next 5 years. There's assumed growth figures recompensing for this (it needs a cumulative 5% after 5 years), but no sign at all of planning to repay the £60bn just the next 6 months of energy caps will cost (and presumably more to come since I don't see prices falling by April). It's the package as a whole that has upset the markets.

This budget is incompetent by any level of economics. Unfair, unjust. Where is the leveling up? Has that been binned? Let's unite and get these people out of office.

@@tomjackson2907 Excellent health care system, basic workplace guarantees, shorter working week, stable home energy prices, bustling agricultural sector with high food standards, excellent public transport network, university access for all, bustling small/medium enterprise sector, relatively simple and fair taxation system... Don't get me wrong, it's FAR from perfect. Plenty of very serious issues. But as what was said, it still feel worlds apart from the UK. One annoying thing is how the French complain all the time about how bad things are! If they were in the same situation as the UK, there would be a revolution.
