James O'Brien on new Brexit tariffs, Rwanda and how the Tories ruined Britain

We just so happened to run into James O'Brien in Central London where a plaque promoting his book How They Broke Britain was erected.
He and Oli chat about the government's Rwanda plan, new tariffs coming in on products coming from the EU, and the Conservative party's self-inflicted downfall.

    One of my favourite, all time ironies is, England saying "better together" to Scotland [on the grounds of remaining in the EU] Then immediately pulling Scotland and N. Ireland out of the EU.

  • @frze5645

    @frze5645

    No irony at all. Better together as a nation state with common objectives and a shared financial structure makes a great deal of sense... this does not apply to the EU which is a group of competing economies (competing with Britain) with a single currency controlled by unelected bureaucrats. Not rocket science but some people do have difficulty understanding the bloody obvious. Scotland and Northern Ireland do not have their own currency, nor could they create one, and it is therefore in their interest to remain in the UK.

    Wrong. To be sovereign means ultimate authority and the United Kingdom ... was necessarily not sovereign whilst a member of the European Economic Community/European Community/European Union. Also, how are you going to 'remove' the people who campaigned and/or voted for Brexit? That is assuming Brexit is the cause of harm.

Similar for the Afghanistan conflict, both Iraq wars and the conflict in Kosovo. Consider legal, national and political sovereignty. @@brianchapman8120 It was his role to show all the benefits of being part of the EU. All he could do was giving it a score of 7/10? Being part of the EU compared to Not at all is 10/10. I do understand why he doesn’t like the EU just like Mick Lynch doesn’t. At least Mick Lynch said it out loud. Nothing is perfect and at times he acted in a childish manner/activist and not a leader.

    Accusing Israel of things and attacking them without evidence, isn’t the job of a journalist… no matter how true you think it is. Journalists should remain neutral and work on facts and evidence. She was fired because she behaved like an activist. Deal with it. This isn’t GBNews, Sangita should have realized that.

    James keep calling it out- as WB Yeats said in his poem "The Second Coming" verse 1 "The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity." Hold on to your conviction - it's the only way to change things. Many others in public life lack your kind of honesty.

    Are you serious? He's talking about Keir Starmers Labour as though they're the answer when everything they've said so far, be it on Palestine, workers rights, Rwanda, migrants, the NHS has been exactly what the Tories said. O'Brien is politically naive, he voted for Boris previously and he's going to vote for this awful Labour Party and fool himself into thinking they're any different. Don't be politically naive too.

    I bet O'Brien hasn't got a chapter on his own contribution to the 2016 referendum which includes working for the anti-EU tabloids, sharing a studio with Hopkins, Farage, Ferrari, et al, and hosting an eponymously titled, and thankfully short-lived hybrid Kyle/Kilroy effort for ITV in which he 'just asked questions' (aka pushed tabloid talking points) about race, immigration & benefits "culture". If Remain had won in 2016, rather than losing 3 times in 3 years (thanks to the likes of O'Brien) he'd still be attacking the working class rather than hoping they're disillusioned enough to stop his latest book flopping.

    But as the comments show on here, they just can't let it go. If more of them had got off their arses to vote we would still be in. That's gotta sting. The remainers thought it would sail through, while the Brexiteers were queueing at the polls. Cue the x percent of the country didn't vote for this comments, which willfully ignore the fact that they could have voted full stop. But they didn't. And now they have to live with their failure.
