Not underrated by the profession that's for sure (see awards) and he has been working in America and overseas originally for a long time and in television (BBC) (started when he was age 16 and in Britain) so maybe not as well known to some outside of the overseas venue. His 1995 film debut was The Near Room (Edinburgh International Film Festival and distribution in the UK). His "accent" is very thick then. ""The plot involves Journ alist Dun bar trying to find his adopted daughter before she is killed by a pae do phile gang. "" ...................... Superb in "The Last King of Scotland". (a MUST see - he plays a Scottish MD. who travels to Uganda to be the personal physician of President Idi Amin (Forest Whitaker) and barely gets out alive from this torturous madman!!! Superb movie. ""The Last King of Scotland (2006) garnered him several award nominations, including the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor. "" Another is "Becoming Jane". This was during the period when women were not allowed many things and marriages were arranged to the family's advantage. He will lose everything so she bravely cuts him off - he later becomes a Judge. (and she along with other family in America that he supports will be doomed as well). (Become Jane was based on real persons and Jane Austin used Thomas Langlois Lefroy as models for characters in her other books.) ""If they attempt to marry, they will risk everything that matters - family, friends, and fortune.""

Even if Butler did lose his accent (it’s still very strong to my ears), how can you blame him? Sure, you can argue that like many actors he’s made an effort to lose his native accent. But the fact is, he lives in the states and is surrounded by non-Scottish accents. While some people manage to keep their native accents despite spending years living in a place surrounded with different accents from their own, many lose theirs either a little or a lot. It’s only natural 🤷‍♂️

As a person diagnosed with Dissociative identity disorder ( split personalities) I have to say he was AMAZING! His portrayal really showed what it is seriously like to live with this disorder. The whole "in the light" thing was a really interesting way of showing how we can often handle things better by letting one personality "take over at will" when needed by using "triggers" that we create for ourselves in order to cope. But it was his portrayal of showing how we can be involuntarily "triggered" into switching that was really breath taking and THAT must have taken A LOT of work for him to be able to pull off as an actor. I have so much respect for Mr. McAvoy for not only taking on such a controversial role, but for portraying us in a realistic instead of "comical" light and for putting so much of his heart and soul into each of the characters he was playing. In a way, he honored us with the way he was able to really show the audience what this disorder is seriously like by using his amazing skills as an actor to bring Crumb to life the way he did. ( well even though one of his personalities was a serial killer and most of us dont have that problem at least LMAO). To be honest, had I seen him playing this character in like a documentary type scenario, I would have sworn he really had the disorder himself, he pulled it off THAT brilliantly.

Except that : Schizophrenia is NOT Dissociative Identity Disorder, and never has been. It is true that many people in the past were misdiagnosed, esp. prior to MPD having its own diagnostic criteria, and people with DID continue to be misdiagnosed with schizophrenia to this day. However they are completely different experiences. If you genuinely want to know more, check out the diagnostic criteria (the DSM 5 provides the latest definitions of mental illnesses), and listen to people with lived experience. Or you can live in a fantasy of thinking that James McAvoy knows exactly what he is talking about. I wish he did! But I have lived too much to know otherwise.

This movie "Glass" was really a masterpiece. I watched it recently. Beautifully shot, best acting. Each and every actor brought their A game. I haven’t seen such truly great performances from actors since, I don’t know, in a very very long time in Hollywood. If someone wants to know what does it mean to act, this is the movie to show them. And they will learn acting. Really, the performances are beyond amazing. The direction was very thoughtful, sharp and brilliantly executed from start to finish. Watch the movie to experience it the way it is presented. It’s stupid to make up your own set of expectations and not leaving any space in your mind to experience what the actual movie has to say. Great movie. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I actually felt the emotion. That’s rare nowadays. Oh btw, the critics can go eat a dick.
