James Gunn (Co-CEO of DC Studios) returns to the pod this week to talk about his takeover of the new DC content slate, the differences between DC and Marvel, and all the pressure that comes with creating a new Superman film. James goes back and discusses the impact that creating Guardians of the Galaxy had on his career and how ‘allowing himself to give a s***’ was a large catalyst to its success. We also talk about embarrassing Chris Pratt moments, whether or not there are too many superhero films, and the future of Superman’s bald headed villain.

I would have loved to listen to Chris Pratt's speech.
The Guardians series was like a rebirth of the original Star Wars movies formula. Story driven. Mostly unk actors. Characters with flaws joining together to defeat an unstoppable evil. Set in space. Challenges to overcome that makes the audience root for the underdogs!
Actually, the fact he wasn't famous was a HUGE plus. Watching famous people in movies takes you out of the experience. I wish more movies had nobodies in them.

That’s what took me out of watching black mirror. The first few seasons had unknown people at the time. Then it was saturated with celebrity cameos

That’s why it’s a big plus that Gunn cast David Corenswet, an unknown actor as his new Superman.

Mostly, though there are stars that disappear in roles eg Cumberbatch.
I remember when the first GotG was tease, everybody thought it will be the 1st flop of Marvel Studios and Chris Pratt wasn't a good choice... after the movie, everybody has changed their minds 😏
Honestly, the Guardians movies are the best of them all.
James Gunn, I believe in you, give us some game changing DC movies - wish you the best
Chris was on park's and recreation. That won a couple of awards.

But he was definitely not a movie star
Adam Savage! Welcome to the show!
I was genuinely confused when I first saw the trailer of Guardians of the Galaxy. When I read they were making a movie, I was super excited as a reader of the *ORIGINAL* comic book. I had never heard of the movie's characters.
Hi Adam Savage 😂 Oh, sorry, wrong guy 😅
Having read most of the comics that feature mostly the same Guardians members as the movies, I can safely say that people are missing very little. From what little I remember, there were basically 3 story arcs: one with a nonsensical story where the timeline is somehow collapsing from both ends, one featuring a nomadic, interstellar cult that literally gains "faith-based" superpowers just by loudly declaring that they believe they have the power before they try to kill people, and a story about the Guardians dealing with Starlord's comics dad being generically evil and doing evil things with a sort of cosmic equivalent to the Darkhold. Now take into consideration that the comic didn't even _start_ to change the boring, campy tone of its writing or the classic comics look of its characters until after the first movie came out. They even threw in a couple of issues where Iron Man basically went on a sabbatical with the Guardians, which was almost certainly just cross-media marketing. And I think Bendis might have been involved at the tail end too (just looked it up, and yes that was Bendis), because Kitty Pryde ended up leading the Guardians when last I read it, which is the shameless character insertion that exclusively happened with her and Miles Morales, in properties that he was in charge of, exclusively _while_ he was in charge of them. It's just an all-around bad time. The one good thing about the comics is that if you're interested in getting a decent overview of the overall structure and workings of the Marvel universe at large, relatively quickly, the Guardians comics will give you a lot of the stuff most of the rest of the Earth-centric comics don't show you (Kree, Shi-ar, Brood, etc).
man this guy needs to let people finish💀
Guardians was a financial success because people trusted the MCU.

I feel like it is the only sub-series that would have been pretty much just as successfull even without the MCU connection.

@@MatiZ815 The MCU is built of the success of Iron Man. Captain America and Thor are the two best movie series to come out of comics.

That’s true for the first movie but afterwards it gained enough pull on its own merit. Look at the current MCU trend where the lack of tight connectivity means MCU movies are no longer a guaranteed hit & yet Guardians 3 was both a critical & financial success.

@@alphanerd7221 Ok but you can’t deny that the recent MCU movies are losing their draw power. Only good ones like Wakanda Forever, GOTG 3 & maybe Shang Chi can draw larger audiences.
I remember when I saw the first trailer that I was really annoyed Marvel was scraping the bottom of the barrel before they made a movie about a female superhero as the star Eventually Captain Marvel was announced, and Battle Angel Alita came out first which is surprising since I was waiting for it for over a decade. And Alita was the better movie
