Joe Walsh, the guitarist, also is responsible for Jimmy Page’s No 1 guitar. Joe had the 1959 Gibson Les Paul originally, and had some work done on it in a shop in Chicago. He didn’t like it and convinced Jimmy to buy it from him for $500.00. He used it when they recorded the second album. He always refers to it as his No 1. When the James Gang toured with the Who during the time of this song, as a gesture of gratitude, Joe Walsh gifted Pete Townshend a 1959 Gretsch 6120 with a Fender Bassman amp. Pete had been using Gibson SGs but Gibson changed the design of them and Pete didn't care for the way the new models sounded, and he was struggling to find the tone he wanted. This new Gretsch guitar and Fender amp combo blew Pete away. He says it was and is the loudest guitar he'd ever owned or will own. It become the foundation of the Who's sound for all of Who's Next and Quadrophenia. So thanks Joe Walsh for being integral to some great Who music in the 70s!!!!

I love Joe Walsh's guitar riffs. James Gang was an American rock band formed in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1966. The band went through a variety of line-up changes until they recorded their debut album as a power trio consisting of Joe Walsh, Tom Kriss, and Jim Fox. Dale Peters replaced Kriss on bass for the band's second and third album. As much as I love Funk #49.... their song "Walk Away" was their biggest hit.

I went to see Jimi Hendrix in Memphis in June of 1970. The James Gang, a band I never heard of previously, opened the show. Unfortunately, Jimi was in bad shape that night, apparently severely high and/or drunk. He was at least an hour late and played for less than an hour. Sadly he would overdose and die three months later. The James Gang gave a great performance playing songs from this album, and I became a fan, buying the album the following week. "The Bomber" is a great song on the album.

"Funk #49" brought the James Gang, and especially Joe Walsh, to everyone's attention back in the day. Had the opportunity to see Joe live twice, and he delivered everything I wanted, and then he delivered some more. He is sooooo talented, and he is really funny and serious at the same time. A true genius of Rock and Roll.
That was a great song, another great song by the James gang is The Bomber it includes a rock version of Ravel's Bolero which really sounds cool on an electric guitar.
👍 Try The Bomber next
This was played by all garage bands across the country back then..Joe also has a tune called Funk 48.
Hey Fellas. Early Joe Walsh. He was always great. The James Gang, his solo career, and The Eagles. Shout out to you guys for reacting to this one. Peace.
Before their shows, the band would warm up with jams that they numbered. This one was number 49 and funky, so when they decided to record it, they named it Funk #49.
That was the impeccable Mr. Joe Walsh on guitar and vocals the man's a legend!!
James Gang - Rocky Mountain Way IS A MUST!!!!
One of the great things about music from the 60s and 70s is that colour was irrelevant. It was all about the music and that was all that mattered. Rock 'n' Roll wasn't just music. It was social change. ♥
I covered this song in several bands I've been in. A very fun song to play.

Back in the mid-late 70's when I was in high school, if you had a rock band you played this song and also "Walk Away". Required play list material!

Rocky Mountain way was it for my local garage bands
I went to see Jimi Hendrix in Memphis in June of 1970. The James Gang, a band I never heard of previously, opened the show. Unfortunately, Jimi was in bad shape that night, apparently severely high and/or drunk. He was at least an hour late and played for less than an hour. Sadly he would overdose and die three months later. The James Gang gave a great performance playing songs from this album, and I became a fan, buying the album the following week. "The Bomber" is a great song on the album.
Definitely a no brainier how can you not like this classic.Big up Joe Walsh of the eagles
One of my favorite slide guitar players
Oh hell yeah! Great tune to fire up my morning - like others have said below, Joe Walsh is an underappreciated genius, and this riff will stay in your head for a good long time. Always great rocking out with you guys - much love from Canada!
Oh! Such a great tune! Joe Walsh is a gem.

If you guys want to get a better feel of just how talented Joe Walsh is, watch his visit to Daryl's House (Daryl Hall's music jam session show). Phenomenal live performances there.
JAMES GANG, "FUNK #49". 3 man band out of Cleveland Ohio. Young Joe Walsh lead singer and Guitar professional. More, "WALK AWAY", "THE BOMBER", "TEND MY GARDEN".
@russelbarnes is totally right! Those were og Licks. This album came out 1969--72. 3 piece band. Try "turned to stone" or Rocky Mountain Way. Nice job, young folk!
This has been my wake up alarm, ring tone for years! I wake up dancing sometimes!
Cleveland Rocks!!! Joe grew up partly in Columbus near OSU campus, only about a mile or so from where I am now. 🕊💖🎶
I really enjoy your analysis of the music and discussions. Have you evolved any of your music producing practices or playing as a result?
This song is from like 1969-1970 . It is one of the the OG's of funky rock riffs .
Remember, guys, in music, good artists borrow - great artists steal. 😁😆
You guys are so freaking lucky to be hearing all the songs you react to the very first time. I was born in 1960 so I grew up on these songs. btw, Joe Walsh (mostly of The Eagles fame) on both lead and rhythm guitar and lead vocals 🔥
Good song. The Bomber (A. Closet Queen/B. Bolero/C. Cast Your Fate To The Wind) is great. Stop, Take a Look Around, Collage, Walk Away, The Devil is Singing Our Song & From Another Time are really good too.
Infectious groove! 2 Head Bobbers are better than 1! Good Reaction Guys as always!
Loved that band, oh back in the 70's again!
Great Reaction again! Next up...."The Bomber" another James Gang Classic.
Next..The Bomber. Same album. When I became of age My mama sat me down, said Son, you're growing up, it's Time you looked around So I began to notice Some things I hadn't seen before That's what brought me here Knockin' on your back door...
Funk #50 is also worth a listen.
Oh y'all are in for a treat.
The James Gang...🎸great....
Jim Fox on drums. Dale Peters on bass and backup vocals. And Joe. They were so good.
Wow this takes me waaay back! Haven't heard it in a long time - It does have a lot going on but there is no mistaking who it is with Joe Walsh when it gets going. Very cool, nostalgic vibe🍂 Thanks guys for taking me down memory lane with this 'funky' tune!🧡
Thank you both for your reactions on this one!
James Gang was seriously awesome
Wow... you're really taking me back to my youth!!!!!!!! 💙💙💙☮☯😎 Love your reactions!!
Prior to Joe’s days with the Eagles. Great old banger.
Gotta love James Gang and Joe Walsh! Talk about an eccentric guy!
Great reaction. One of my all-time favorites.
One of the great guitar players/frontman that nobody talks about. Joe Walsh rocks as a matter of fact a little Rocky Mountain Way is probably something you both should hear!!!!! Awesome reaction🎸🎸🎸🎸
Freshman year in HS 1974 I went to a new friends house. Her older brother had a Joe Walsh LP titled The Smoker You Drink The Player You Get. Absolutely blew my mind. Have been a huge fan of Joe Walsh ever since. Great reaction gentlemen 👏
Listened to this in high school. Our hard rock for my friends.
Jimmy Fox is laying down that drum beat, and im my humble opinion he's one of the best feel drummers ever!
This is from 1970 Joe is also Ringo Starr's brother in law
Classic!!!!!!
One of the best ever three man bands
They are from Ohio. Check out Joe Walch's solo work . The Eagles were a great band before Joe Walsh. I saw the Eagles at my college, Billy Joel opened for them. After Joe joined they took it to another level.
You know like when a song reaction really hits the spot - didn't know what I wanted to hear til I saw it.
This is another crazy song on my list from the lake. Shaking with the Ledge Mob.
The story I heard was that there was a forth member of James Gang who was the lead singer and lead guitarist and he suddenly quit which forced Joe Walsh to learn to play a combination of lead and rhythm guitar, AND sing lead on most of their songs… not to mention do most of the writing… I saw him live once in the 80s with just a drummer and bass… he’s super talented and cool….
"JOE'S AN INTERESTING BUNCH OF GUYS" ~ GLENN FREY (RIP)
Good job picking up that🎉 Footloose Riff in Funk #49😮
Brilliant observation on the similarity to Footloose!!! How did I never think of that???
Was present for Hell Freezes Over Concert Joe Walsh came out acting crazy. Joel Walsh is AWESOME guitarist. ❤
The groove is deep w this one Lifes been good is another
Got to see em live at college........great band!
" Funk #49" came out fourteen years before "Footloose". It was a three man band. Joe Walsh on guitar and vocal.
Joe Walsh is a deeeeep rabbit hole that never ends. He's only gotten better with age.
They were formed in Cleveland, Ohio in 1966. There were just 3 ,, embers. They made these albums:: James Gang · 1966-1977 · 1991 · 1996 · 1998 · 2001 · 2005 · 2006 · 2022.
Love it!! This song is sooo old! I know cuz I was Young when it came out- long before there was a band called The Eagles! This was in Heavy rotation at our parties. Loved your head banging reaction 🤘💯
Love the funk. 😎👍❤
Joe's da man, and has a great sense of humor to boot
Time to do "Rocky Mountain Way"....! It's a Good one...!!!
Thanks fellas.
My favorite from them has always been “Turn to Stone”. 😊
Here we go!
'How ya doin'!?' - Joey
Stripped down funky rock. My favorite kind.
Dude! This was 1970! Now you gotta do Walk Away & Funk #48. I'll be looking forward to it. 👍😎
Love the "Birds solo"🤣💨
Great song.
"IN THE CITY", "WALK AWAY", "ALL NIGHT LONG", "ROCKY MOUNTAIN WAY', "THE CONFESSOR", "PRETTY MAIDS ALL IN A ROW"(with the Eagles)
I just saw Joe Walsh and the James Gang in November! They are from ohio. It was Joe Walsh and the James Gang. The Black Keys , Nine Inch Nails, and The Breeders. All those bands are from Ohio. It was Ohio Fest, lol. It was a truly amazing night of live music! It is a three piece band, by the way.
Life of Illusion is another must listen👍👍
Another great one.P.S love the MET hat bro.
From Cleveland Ohio!!! Gotta listen to “The Bomber”!
I'd never noticed how similar this song was to footlose and omg you're right hahahaha
