As a person who's worked in engineering environments, this is the kind of video that sells me. When I first came across this vacuum my initial thought was "What makes this vacuum worth $700?" Well, the answer is; brush-less motors, precise manufacturing, innovative use of materials and imaginative engineering. This is a well thought out product with numerous innovations. Well done Mr. Dyson.

Precision engineering

As a nerd I am seriously delighted when someone takes the design of tech to such extremes as to develop technology to make 'current top of the line' even better. As an ID, I find joy in well designed products. When he explained the mechanism that empties the bin, I realized why Dyson's cost more than the others. I have a Shark cordless, works great, not heavy, not so expensive... but man the way to empty the bin sucks and you get your hands dusty because the filter gets coated in fuzz and even if it doesn't the latch that closes the bin isn't great, and the bin itself is small. It's the little details derived of careful observation and consideration of the user's needs and ways that makes a good product great. Well done Dyson!

James Dyson is basically the Steve jobs of household appliance's.

Absolute genius and a great pleasure listening to James Dyson.

I think he’s one of the best inventors of modern times. Sure, vacuum cleaners aren’t particularly exciting but the technology which goes into making the motor and batteries alone, is staggering.

That was actually really good to watch. Mr Dyson is a very smart fellow

I am such an advocate of these products. Great design and extensive R&D.

23:57 Sir James Dyson is a smart man. Most engineering firms do not do this step with product design, it is just good enough if it works. Optimizing it usually doesn't make it any more expensive to manufacture or increase the weight, you just have to change the design and it is much better. So often management is short sighted and just tries to get something done as fast as possible while not actually trying to make it better. Here you have a founder/owner engineer in-charge and the quality of the products shows.

Love my dysons. I have 3. Got a V7 Motörhead, Ball Multifloor 2 and recently got a DC35 Multifloor. All of which are easy to use and work very well

This technology goes beyond vacuum cleaners. I'm very impressed.

Found a Dyson DC08 in the rubbish at the dump. Pulled it to pieces to see how it works. Cleaned it all & got new filters. Works a treat. Cant believe how much dust it gets out og the carpet. The engineering side of these are awsome.

Listen to James Dyson talk on an NPR talk show called "How I build this". Fascinating!

I wish Dyson would invest in Spinal Cord injuries. I'd be walking by 2025! :D

Amazing presentation, learned so much. Upping the amps to prevent fading was very clever. I didn't realize how it was possible to prevent batteries from trickling but this video really helps explain it. I wish I can just hang out with James for a day.

It's called voltage regulation. A "tech" that has existed in various devices for +15 years or so. Possibly longer, among others in Flashlights. In Dysons case, I guess they used the new 7th battery - to compensate even further for the voltage drop that occurs during battery depletion (and of course, give it 17% more battery capacity).

I love when companies post things like this, and Dyson is one of the most fascinating companies to learn about development backstories!

Probably the most futuristic machine I've seen, even if the 'big's binner' ;)

Andrew Higgins sorry, not Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs was a presenter more than he was ever an engineer. No offense there, but Dyson seems to actually understand why his name is on the company, as if he actually fully understands WHY his company's work is monumental; its technically better. Now that's similar to the first iPhone, but the thing here is dyson is STILL significantly improving what it has been working on every 4 years, and increasing efficiency in ways nobody else can touch. He's like Edison in this way: he is not content with the best at the moment and is willing to commit immense resources, effort and painstaking hours to making what he has available to him (and his company, technology wise) ever better by significant margins.

Samuel Thomas you sell vacuums I gues? Dyson vacuums have nothing new. Make lots of sounds and cost some more than any other vacuum. Digital motors don't exist only inside of a simulation. Its a standard vacuum with plastic fans with a standard brushless motor. It looks like my first Sony sound recorder. The fanless fan still uses a fan makes more sound than my cheap fan. And yes I compared with a db meter. Do I hate Dyson, no Handdryers made by Dyson actually work great. Only bad thing is the super loud sound. But at least it dries fast.

Robin Campfens their digital motor is a real thing. It's used for the impellers on their vacuums that are rated for more suction because of the speeds they can reach and are thus shaped differently for this exact purpose. They became the #1 selling vacuum company in the UK because their products just work better. I don't have to sell anything. I use a Dyson product, one and yes only one. It's an air filter, heater and fan. And it does the job better than all of the ones I've had before it. It's quieter than ANY of the air filters I've had before and pushes FAR more air through its filter per hour, there's a noticeable difference in my allergic reactions to airborne crap because of it. I've done research on Dyson motors. They have record setting electric motor speeds that can take the attached blades to hypersonic speeds. Their hairdryer is preferred by just about everyone who tries it. Their vacuums have been tested under extreme conditions and still hold suction due to their use of vortex tech that Dyson leads in. Their newest hand (v2) driers DO indeed dry faster than anything I've seen before or since. Their products are technologically superior; I've looked into it. I'm an engineering student, not a fan boy, but when I study something meticulously to see how it works, I have immense respect for the people behind it.

Samuel Thomas hypersonic. Which means sonic boom. Where did the sonic boom go? You cannot avoid a sonic boom. The fan actually is quite standard. Look at any waterpump. Same shape. I have seen comparison tests, dyson actually had less suction power. You say digital motor is a thing. What is a digital motor supposed to be? You might say they use a digital motor controller. Which is not fully digital. And the motor never is. It's a normal brushless engine. With a controller board. There are controllers which are called digital. Because the pulse is partially created digitally, but there is always a digital to analog conversion. You actually create a smooth wave you will need an analog wave. A digital pulse would be quite loud and destructive. You could do it digitally. It would be controllable but because its build up on square "waves" this would make lots of noise in sound and electromagnetic noise. How can it work, a high speed baudrate. Send a digital signal. Lowest speed would be like 0000000000000001 00000000000001 etc. Mid speed would be like 000000100000. Max speed be like 1111111111111111. Of course this is simplified to 1 coil. How brushless engines actually work is not by using pure digital signals. They do use a microprocessor to calculate how long and how high each pulse on each coil should be. Bases uppon a speed and positioning sensor(hall sensor) And some smart controllers can measure how much each coil amps are being used. Combine this and you can make a very stable and efficient motor. But that's allready on the market for many years. Not invented by dyson. Used by many machines. Most known in drones. They need small efficient engines high speed and accurate speed control. Some washing machines also use this. Because accurate speed control can make it move the laundry in good balance. Here control is needed not high speed but high torgue. A vacuum needs average speed but actually not really much changes in speed. But would you really want ultra high speed fans? Not really. Any ultrasonic speed would cause lots of issues. High sound, high vibrations. Big load and heat produced by bearings. What works better? Bigger fan many blades. This is why other brands have almost silent vacuums. These cost more than half the price of a dyson. Like 250 euros. I compared the noise levels and it was amazingly quiet. I thought it was not turned on. The dyson keps making a painfull high pitched noise. Gues why jet airplanes use an enormous amount of blades. Because many blades can create more pressure make it more efficient. If they had less blades the rpm of these engines would be too high. Even with this amount of blades. The compressor blades at the front have about 1500 rpm at normal height En at takeoff about 3000. Newer engines are designed for lower rpm because it makes less sound and less stress on all the parts. Lower rpm almost always is better for efficiency, stress and sound. But now this guy in the video says lower voltage and higher amps. Which means heat production, less efficient. Gues why high power lines use high power? More efficient. Less loss thru heat. This is all marketing, he explains thing but mixes things up... The cyclones, they work because air is lighter than all dirt. Not correct. If the dirt has a huge surface area it would be lighter than air. So a big part will be pulled in the rubber cyclone things. Ever tried to open a dyson? It's weird, the cyclones should seperate the dust from the air. But there is so much dust and hair behind the rubber turbines. That's a failure, reduces suction. Also he explains that moving around corners is not efficient. But opening it up shows many corners some even beyond 180 degrees. Next the rubber tips in the cyclone create drag lots of drag, making it less efficient. Test results say its less powerfull and has more db of noise and and really painful high frequencies. This all would be not all that bad if it would cost less. But its the most expensive consumer vacuum ever.

When I have time to read your rebuttal I will. For now, yes. Their motors do use digitally controlled pulses that are far more frequent than anything else in the market, making them extremely high speed. Hypersonic: faster than sound. Yes. Yes you can indeed avoid the sonic boom, especially if pressure is VERY low around the object that is moving at hypersonic speeds. So yea, if something moves faster than sound, it has the physical capability to not make a sonic boom, and actually not be as loud as something that's just under the sound speed barrier. More later.

As now being a proud owner of this V10 I was quite impressed at just how well the engineering is for this entire vacuum. Yes, we would all like to have a longer lasting power house but just imagine where this advancement will take Dyson. I'm terribly sad that I'll not get an upgrade to my favorite Cinetic Ball upright vac but to have the same power in a handheld is amazingly jaw dropping. Honestly, as a homeowner of a 2k+ sq ft home with kids, pets, allergies and an desire for a thoroughly clean home, the only real complaint I have against the vacuum isn't battery life, it's the lack of swap-able batteries. To put this into perspective, I'm a mechanic and have run my shop for years on the same old Air powered tool technology, like everyone else. But with the last 2 years of advancements in handheld power tools, I've done away with almost all of my air tools and replaced them with brushless motored battery powered tools with up to 9mAh batteries on 18V - 20V systems. Great examples of these are the Dewalt 20V MAX XR series and the Milwaukee M18 FUEL series of handheld battery powered tools, 1 battery connection to power them all. I will admit... I retrofitted an old V6 with a home modification of a "swap-able" battery pack but when you realize that Dyson went as far as to have an activation switch on the battery itself, you realize how inferior your home mod is... or how annoying it is to now have a vacuum that doesn't stop unless you take the battery off... Hahaha. So I like many others that have or have had both these battery power vacuums or the standard upright vacuums, I wish I could say it to James Dyson himself but I would encourage Dyson as a whole to not abandon the corded vacuum for 2 reasons. A) Unlimited use throughout the home - with the inconvenience of cord length and weight. B) Anyone with a medium sized home and larger (2k sq ft+) will not abandon the use of a corded vacuum because they want the MAXimum suction power from start to finish. Based on my home, the average vacuum run time with my Cinetic Ball (Carpet, Hardwood and Tile) is usually about 40-60 minutes depending on if I want to move furniture out and vacuum those areas as well. So my takeaway on the entire product - IT'S FANTASTIC... no, it doesn't last as long as I would expect from V8 to V10 but you can't expect a company to improve a product unless they are given both pros and cons and have ideas bounced off of them from real customer experiences. However, a company can't improve if you don't support them through purchasing their current product line or investing with them. Basically, I know I sound like a fanboy, but when you've had the same DC15 Animal ball for 13 years and it's outlasted your parent's 15 year old Rainbow, there is a lot to be said for the build quality. Thanks to any and all who give this a read.

As far as feedback on the V10 to Dyson, the only big complaint I've seen on numerous youtube reviews (and one which I concur with) is that the power button is much too easy to *accidentally trigger* when handling the unit (removing tube, putting on the wall mounting, etc). The simplest fix would be to change the power setting to have "Max", "2", "1" and add a fourth setting "OFF".

Dyson needs to up their warranty. 2 years is not enough for an $850 (CDN) stick vac. A 5 year no quibble, no limit, no deductible warranty is were they need to go with this V10. I'm getting 4 to 5 years from a $80 Bissell and it cleans my hard floors just fine. I could never justify this machine unless they have the balls to back it up with a zero BS warranty. I need to know that I won't have to by another vacuum again in the next 5 years.

Hi Marcus, Thanks for your comment. Although we offer a warranty of two years on our cord-free machines, that does not dictate how long the product will 'last'. Many electronic products feature warranties far shorter than this (smart phones, tablets, laptops etc). if you will use it for purpose its made and use with care,it will work more than 5 years. And you have to understand that any battery so far wont work lifetime. But if u r unthankfull country boy who crush things and drop them,and want it cheap and work forever. Dyson is just not for you,just stick to broom.

This is not a good answer. Why do you offer 5 year warranty for other corded models? If he can say that the technology is here and it doesn't make sense to design new corded models then you could back that up with the same warranty. About the battery he said that it should work for 15 years, so that shouldn't be a problem. If you know the product will last more than 5 years why not give the customer a peace of mind? For me it's a huge deal. To give one month salary for vacuum that motor can stop working at month 26 and I can throw it in the trash. Or pay 3/4 of new one to repair it.

Because customers are dumb and use it for wrong purposes,that battery will last for 15 years ,but if u will charge it as you should and if u store it as you should. But most of ppl are not doing it and they start to whine if customer service decline warranty.

What James has done is incredible he hasn't been in this game for that long of time but he still stepped it up he really gets it I'm Amazed I don't have enough money to get a Dyson cuz I'm 11 and I make my own money $5 a week but once I get that money I'm not I'm going to purchase me one it's just incredible how fast he's done that he is the vacuum God

Cordless are very good had ours some time, great for the car and quick clean ups, however I don’t feel can ditch a corded machine altogether, if you’re doing DIY or a deep house clean cordless hasn’t got enough run time.

I know James personally. He actually got this idea whilst watching ladies doing the twist on the dance floor in the 80s. He realised that they danced better when they spun whilst not holding their bags. That also gave him the bagless idea. :-)

This man is a genius. Since I bought the V8 Absolute I love vacuuming the house. The joke is, the V8 is much cheaper than the V10, so I had it for €300 from someone at the Dutch Marketplace. It’s really great.

Just got this one as a Christmas present. It's kinda cool to get your hands on alien technology.

What screen is that? The black levels look amazing - OLED or MicroLED, Sony Cledis/Canvas?

Waiting for that solid state batteries and especilly for Dyson car.

One of the most interesting companies in existence. Just a shame that battery tech hasn’t yet evolved to support the rest of Dyson’s development.

🧐 Loop pile carpets. In the V7 Operating Manual, and the V7 has essentially the same kind of motor-driven brush bar head as does the V10, it clearly states: “The brush bar on the appliance can damage certain carpet types and floors.” With loop pile carpets, as stated on leading carpet manufacturers’ websites, it is recommended that the brush bar on vacuum heads be switched off. Loop pile carpets are popular carpets; but you can’t turn off the brush bar rotation on the supplied motor-driven brush bar head of the Dyson V series of vacuum cleaners - including of course the V10 which happens to be the most powerful of the V series range - to accommodate the vacuuming of loop pile. Will Dyson bring out a suction-only head for their V series vacuum cleaners?

@Dyson UK can I ask why the head shown has the slider to open the front slots to allow large debris to be sucked up, but when I bought a V10 Total Clean the head did not have the slider on the front and I was disappointed by this. The hoover is amazing however and far better than my V8.

Their new v11 outsize has removable batteries, it actually comes with 2 and 2 chargers as well.

Alway love a vacuum cleaner with plenty of dirt capacity, one that has a binner big, and glad to hear they made their big binner 😂😂😂😂😂😂

I dont think the people of Malmesbury Wiltshire that worked at his factory and were put out work when he shut the factory there and moved production to Singapore would call Mr Dyson "Sympathetic" more a Smarmy S!!T.

James, I got hold of the V10 at the store today. With this device you are (again) far out of any competition and in a total league of your own. After holding the V10 in my hand, and trying it out, and looking at its perfectly beautifully made parts and surfaces inside and out, it literally hurts the eyes to even look at any of your competitors'devices, let alone touching them and trying them out. Even the allegedly top-of-the-line "Bosch BBS1U224 Unlimited" (ridiculously expensive by the way) looks and feels absurdly outdated: from design, materials and surfaces to handling, switches, accessories, etc. Not to mention the prehistoric "ratchet" filter that you have to ratch-clean all the time because Bosch doesn't have proper cyclones (actually no 2nd stage cyclones at all). I feel like I'm looking at 'ancient farming machinery vs. modern PC processors' when I'm comparing your competitors' products with the V10. If you ever need a proud, award-winning patent attorney, let me know: It would be my dream to patent and defend the amazing and fantastic Dyson products.

People have been using Ultracaps coupled with batteries to improve battery life for years.

I have a few questions, James said here that the DDM V10 creates 290AW of suction, how come the cyclone V10 only does 151aw on the highest setting? Why isn't 151aw standard mode and 290Aw on the max setting? Will you make a cordless upright featuring the V10 DDM with 290Aw or is the stick type what all future Dyson vacuums will be?

290 AW when talking about just the motor. The obstruction of going through the cyclones and especially the filter will decrease the AW.

It's like gross and net horsepower of a car engine. My car does 370hp, but probably only 310 at the wheels.

There’s no reason to be only corded or cordless, Dewalt cordless mitersaw has a simple module you clip into the battery port and your corded if you want.

Hey Dyson, why doesn't the UK model of the V10 have a variable airflow direct drive head, unlike the US model?

I wonder what king of bearing they use for this super fast turbine.

289 AW? So this is more powerful then a lot of their plug in Vacuums?

Fabulous innovative product.....although we managed to completely destroy our V10 a few days after purchase with a damp filter (after it was washed) which we thought was dry....with precision like this comes more responsibility for the owner! Dyson replaced it straightaway and we love the V10, it's awesome machine!

Does the cleaner head turn as easily as the dyson ball?

Why does the UK version of the V10 not come with torque head but the us does. I live in the UK and I want the torque head for my V10.

where can i find the patents associated with the V10?

I absolutely love my V8, which has replaced my chorded vacuum and I'm sure v10 would be better. expensive yes, but cant get them same quality product from other campanies.

Mesopo Mesopo Kirby, Royal, and Sanitare are really reliable too. I've seen them last 25+ years! Plus you can get them pretty cheep online

At these huge air speeds you would expect a huge abrasion between the dust and the cyclone walls, right?

Hi Feza, Heavier matter will actually bypass the cyclone chamber and be captured directly into the bin. The small particles (as small as 1 micron) will enter the cyclone chamber and be separated by 79,000G of force from the airflow to drop into the bin. At this stage, the particles are so fine and microscopic, abrasion is certainly not an issue. I hope this helps. Best wishes, Allan

I wish Dyson moves into robot vacuums that is thinner but has similar functionalities (and better) of Xiaomi Roborock 2. I am a fan of Dyson (owner of 2 Dyson vacuums) and plenty cheap and good robot vacuums (strongly believe in cheaper robot vacuums as the wear and tear is very very high and needs annual replacements but this isn’t environmentally friendly).

Of all the perfection. You left out one very crucial part. None of your V series can stand on its own including V10. Many times you need to use two hands to remove something in order to vacuum. Many times my V8 topple down and hit the floor hard when I don't lean the vacuum properly on the wall. Even is leaning properly, it slides sideways and topple down too. You need to design something like a motorbike level to stand the device on its own while using the floor vacuum head.

The V10 specifically has a rubber strip on the handle so it can be lent up against the wall, although it can still fall over if you're not careful.

My big concern is how many time can I recharge it. Let’s say I use it 1 or 2 time each week. Let’s say I charge it 100 times each years. How many years it will last? Also, is it ok to overcharge the battery? When it stays on the wall, it constantly charging, no? Thank you

Hi There, Dyson cordless vacuums have a charger that communicate with the battery to help prevent damage to the battery due to overcharging. Once the battery is full, the charger will stop charging the battery. Also, as a result, you may definitely keep the machine on the charger for use whenever you need it. what there doing is making a better motor than the corded vacuum there using the cars as a example

I bought Dyson V6 just over 2 years, now out of warranty for £250. Twice during the two years of warranty the roller brush motor mechanism packed up. Luckily it was replaced due to warranty twice. Then now when the warranty has expired it seems the battery is not charging. Called Dyson who say their engineer will attend if it is repair cost £80 & if the battery pack needs changing £100. I wonder if it is worth repairing.

Hi Ravinder, I'm sorry to hear about this. We can't specify an exact lifespan for the battery pack as this will depend entirely on how each individual machine is used, stored and maintained. It would be entirely up to you whether or not to have your machine repaired, but as part of a fixed price service the machine would be fully inspected by our engineer and returned to full working order. curious if one of the Dyson engineers fiddled with creating an electric turbine where it will be place at the front bumper of an electric vehicle and the incoming air will spin the turbine and then recharge the batteries as the EV is moving forward.

You should INVENT a battery that can be easily swapped for new V10 (as promo include second one). Or one that can be charged faster. Or one that is double the size. Or combine all options. - 6 minutes of MAX mode is just not enough!

you do not need Max mode for anything , try using the lowest setting and getting your 60 minutes worth

Jasbir Kaur Villaschi 21700 batteries more mah higher amp discharge then you can run on high for 60 minutes. Anyone know what cells are in the v10 battery pack?

In the brushbar it has a brushless motor.

How about this. Use a hall effect system so that the motor can still bypass for just incase the digital aspect fails or you need full power and you still have analog ways of controlling the motor for full power and then if other periferies like the brush head motor for carpet application a mounted driver with software can program the powerhead motor by inputs of the motorized brush head motor to adjust the speed or load of the powerhead motor for the needs of carpet application. Almost like pilot and auto pilot

Future is here, now !!!

I am looking for a new vacuum however I am literally torn now between this and the Shark. So my Dyson DC07 (purple and grey) finally packed in last year. I had it since it came out, well a year after give or take. I absolutely loved my powerful machine. We ran into financial difficulty and decided to get a cheaper vacuum "powerflex" last year. I was a bit annoyed with it actually as the dust got caught up between the bucket and the inner cyclone part (the cheap vacuum not dyson as that never happened with dyson). It was only intended as a stepping stone for something better. Thought, 2 yrs should do it to get our finances sorted. Only for the thing to pack in on us this week! At least I got 5 yr with a Dyson before anything happened to it, generally speaking. Anyway, I have been watching duoclean flexology technology and with 2 batteries I am impressed. I am hearing however that their batteries are heating up and that to me is not a good sign. Also their handheld part of the machine is hurting some users hands and wrists. However, I am also impressed with this and as a Dyson fan, being that my last one was powerful, never lost suction and I had it for so long until I smelled a burning smell and knew being the second time, that it was time for a new model. I have been wanting to go to cordless for a while now. I think the big thing for me when looking for cordless is, Picking up all the particles, Clean Air Technology Duo-clean Technology Flexology for hard to reach places, Lightweight, Powerful, Generous size dust bucket, Definitely run time so 2 batteries would be advantageous. Dyson you tick off so many boxes with this new model but I am so torn still. I will look at some more reviews and if I decide to go for Dyson in the end up then I will update.

Thanks you for your reply David. I have always trusted Dyson, but I was so taken in by the thought of duo clean and flexology and longer running batteries. I think I might just go for this v10 model sometime in the future though. I really do not wish to be tethered to the cord anymore so to speak. I really like what James explained with the way this particular battery operates. Also the foam type brush to pick up small particles like dust is an absolute must for us. We have a few children so our house can get quite messy very quickly. I wonder if that head could also be used on carpet to get the fine dust that sometimes gets trapped in deeper piled carpets? Beats using a hard bristled sweeping brush on my carpet which is what I am doing just now to get things clean. Anyway, thanks for the response, it is much appreciated.

Frozen Willow Since cordless vacs won't deep clean and don't last too long is quite a $700 price tag. You'll be better buying a cheaper stick/cordless vac preferably with interchangeable batteries (I know Shark and Ryobi make them) for about 199-399 and a good corded vacuum that'll deep clean and last years like Sanitare ($150+) Royal ($300+) or even a used Kirby to use every few weeks. Hope this helps.

Well done James Dyson ... I have two of your vacuums now and look forward to cordless. Only one problem you need to tackle now, and its a huge one, and that is price. Technology needs to be affordable. If you cannot bring down the cost then your market will be niche. I'm not paying £500 for a vacuum cleaner no matter how good it is. £200 and you have a sale.

I do hope Samsung does this. Dyson will just patent all they can get away with, build it as cheaply as possible, charge a fortune, and design it to last just the right amount of time, which is the warranty period. Hopefully a samsung shaver won't catch my arse hairs on fire.
