    @@WHATANTICS Ha! I guess you have noticed that this wasn't my first comment about this documentary. But, you don't have to thank me. "Born Cool " isn't just another documentary about the life of James Dean. There are plenty of those out there. What you have created here is truly a work of art that has shown him in a very unique and different light. That is what makes it stand out among the rest. I know I have said this in a previous comment, but the reason I keep coming back to this is because I don't feel like I'm watching "yet another documentary ". Yours is the only one that makes me feel as if I am sitting in Fairmount among his family and friends. You really did an outstanding job in keeping his legacy alive AND Respected.

    @@WHATANTICS P. S. My dream is to one day get to Fairmount. Perhaps that's why I have such an affinity for this documentary, it's really the closest I feel to being there. I live in NYC area and have been by Jimmy's 68th street apartment many times. While I do realize that his "metamorphosis " occurred in NYC and that he loved it there, it is very clear that his soul never left Fairmount. That was also made very clear in "Born Cool ".

    This is a fascinating documentary, it speak directly with those who knew Dean as a young boy and teenager and cuts through a lot of the misinformation that has been repeated and magnified over the years to create a distorted myth about the boy and man that James Dean became. It really hits hard how a persons reputation can be twisted and distorted to fit a particular narrative that the media wishes to present to the public- it must've been so frustrating for these people to see how the myth began and was promoted over the decades following James tragic death.

    I know you said you felt the film was a little dated in regards to tech stuff, and maybe a little amateur because it was your first. But, it is really first rate. By far my favorite documentary about him. You did something that none of the others have ever done and focused on his friends from home and family, and showed how much he loved his roots and home. You didn't cater to the Hollywood or tabloid images of a moody, emotionally broken, sad and tormented artist. It was nice to see him portrayed as nice, funny, happy and loved. Awesome job, the things that may bother you now about it, pale in comparison to content.

That being the case, you believe what they are saying. No exploitation here. That is why this is my favorite. Also, knowing how much Jimmy loved that town, the people who lived there, the farm and, his family. This is the one documentary that tells the true story of the real James Dean.

  • @ksk5664
    @ksk56642 жыл бұрын

    I've watched a lot of documentaries about Jimmy and interviews with his Hollywood and New York friends. I wondered how different people could each give different accounts of him. Marcus talking about how Jimmy was different things to different people and that he was what someone wanted him to be...made it make sense to me now. Some of his co-workers and friends would talk about how Jimmy would stare at them before approaching them. Maybe he was summing them up to see how to best approuch them. Or maybe he was making a character study of them. Anyway, the was the answer that satisfies me, he was a bit of chameleon. Even in my own life he has meant different things: As a teenager I wanted a boyfriend like him, as a young adult I would think oh how could I have ever wanted to have a boyfriend like that. He would have been so much trouble and break someone's heart. Now that I'm older with children his age and nearing his age: it breaks my heart for the loss of a potentially full life. I think of my own children passing like that and the tears just flow. I believe he was a great actor and developed a skill early on in life on how to influence people the most. Like a modern day Huckleberry Finn.

    Just watched this again. And, again, thank you, so much for this. It is so intimate and personal. I like this so much better than the Hollywood glitz garbage. To me, this is.the REAL Jimmy because stories are told by those who truly knew and loved him.

    To me, James was like a shooting star, in a way. He blazed across the sky for all to see.. but all too briefly.

    They both had GREAT acting skills and both seemed to be character actors for sure wanting to do their own thing like Rebel without a Cause. Very unique. Good observation on your part. But then again I'd never seen the movie Midnight Express until the trailer just now and wow it looks real good. Like a very powerful performance by Davis. Will have to get the movie now. Thanks for the sharing this because now I want to see that movie! :)

    I don't know why.. But knowing that James Dean is dead just makes my heart ache.. And I cry sometimes.. I know it's crazy, I didn't even meet him, heck, I wasn't even born yet when he died.. I don't know why I'm like this. 😔😔

    Hmm. It's hard to accept so many things that we hear about, or experience ourselves. Getting close to people, then having them disappear, seems so unfair. JD touched and moved us through his work, so powerfully. The film, Rebel Without a Cause, and Jimmy's role in it, were perfectly- placed depictions of the life of an American teenager. Jimmy's talent and natural charisma provided a character that was relatable for anyone with feelings of inadequacy, insecurity, and the alienation that, particularly, a teenager feels as an outsider. It"s heartbreaking, and does seem very unfair, that the young man with such ability would be "taken" from us so soon after he'd arrived.

    To Politically Correct and those who repliied: really kind and thoughtful statements. Its so nice to see how many people James Dean inspired and continues to inspjre decades later. I was also born After he died. I have seen many negatve, nasty, and even vile comments here and it is sad. Some of them seem to have no consequence and writen just for the sake of being mean. Dean isn't here to defend himself. His sexuality is unimportant. What's important is that James Dean had very special purpose in that he opened doors for many people during his very brief career and continues to be an inspiration not only for other actors, but painters, writers, musicians, and other artists, as well. Not bad for a man who had a career of less than 2 years and died at 24. John Lennon said, "if it wasn't for James Dean the Beatles would not have existed."
