Hilarious seeing Mr. Burrows recounting the story of Andy Kaufman as Tony Clifton doing a disasterous rehearsal on "Taxi"!

I'm not sure, but I think Kaufman was the first Elvis impersonator, because he was doing Elvis when Elvis was still alive.

Not sure either, but I absolutely remember his first tv performance as Foreign Man, and he was incredible. "My wife...she is such a bad cook (nervous, smiling, foriegn guy attempting standup, thinking they are all going to laugh), she's TERRIBLE! (smiling bigger, getting a little bit of false confidence, laughing at his character, not with it--it was great). After so many minutes of these few similar jokes, "Now, I'd like to do an impersonation for you...ELVIS PRESLEY (audience and we at home dying). Turns around, spends time bent over a trunk, taking his time. I remember saying to my Dad, "He's going to nail this". Then he turns just his heck and head around, i think, and gives the Elvis sneer, and it was all over.

Yes, think so too. I've heard it said that he was definitely the first to do Elvis on network TV. Amazing to think that we owe it to Andy for all those Elvis impersonations over the years. Maybe it wouldn't have been like that if everybody hadn't seen him do that archetypal impression of The King, serious but funny at the same time, when he appeared on Carson all those years ago.

The funny thing is that Carla's husband, on Cheers has a SMIDGE of Tony (CLifton) in him. The way he talked. Maybe it was a coincidence. I don't know. I just think of Tony Clifton when I watch Carla's husband on cheers. (Played by Dan Hyada).

sad - both Kaufman's death and how few really get how he took comedy to another level. what I'd give to have been there "live" during the Tony Clifton outburst on Taxi or similar lmao

Not sure I quite believe that account (sounds like a bit of rose-colored glasses)...
