Yeah, and The Famous Flames' choreography is RAZOR SHARP !!! I'm glad that they finally got inducted into the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME last year. They should have gone in with James in 1986 !!!

One of the MOST , if not THE MOST, DYNAMIC VOCAL GROUPS of ALL TIME !! Unless you saw them LIVE , you wouldn't know just what I'm talking about . Yes, JAMES BROWN & THE FAMOUS FLAMES were a GROUP. It's TOO BAD that the PUBLIC at LARGE didn't THINK of JB and The Famous Flames as a GROUP. All that they ever focused on was JAMES BROWN...and the BANDMEMBERS. That's because THE GROUP (THE FAMOUS FLAMES) were improperly MARKETED, due to a series of backroom deals made between JAMES BROWN , manager Ben Bart, and the Record Label, KING RECORDS, to put all of the promotion ,publicity, and marketing muscle, behind only ONE PERSON in the group, while the rest of the Flames , BYRD, BENNETT, STALLWORTH, and TERRY, were treated as non-essential and unimportant . The James Brown Bioflick PROVED this . But, looking back at this and other FLAMES performances, the TRUTH can be CLEARLY SEEN : The FAMOUS FLAMES were a DYNAMITE GROUP....and , while JAMES BROWN was the lead singer , Bobby Bennett's words were CORRECT: BROWN was A FAMOUS FLAME ...just like the REST . They WERE BILLED as a GROUP. THEY PERFORMED as a GROUP. They INTERACTED ONSTAGE as a GROUP....*THEY WERE A GROUP*. From 1953-1968, James Brown NEVER performed live without THE FAMOUS FLAMES....No matter WHAT ANY UNINFORMED PERSON MAY TELL YOU. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame KNEW this. They looked PAST all of the lies, the bull, the inaccurate marketing, and the misconceptions...and got at THE TRUTH. And THAT''S why THE FAMOUS FLAMES were inducted in 2012.

I just came from an obituary of Danny Ray, Mr. Ray's original hype man (he's the man with the cape), as seen in this clip... here a paragraph from his obit: “The T.A.M.I. Show,” with Mr. Ray’s routine as its climax, was released in theaters at the end of 1964, and it vaulted Mr. Brown from the R&B circuit to sold-out arenas almost overnight. The Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards later said that agreeing to follow Mr. Brown onstage that night was the worst decision the band had ever made.

The FAMOUS FLAMES : JAMES "Mr Dynamite" BROWN: Lead Singer. LLOYD "Baby Lloyd" STALLWORTH : Second Tenor. BOBBY BENNETT: First Tenor. BOBBY BYRD, (Group Founder) Baritone/Bass) backed by the musicians of The James Brown Band

Notice how BYRD and LLOYD slid back, slick as water, at the PRECISE INSTANT that James' knees HIT THE FLOOR, leaving BOBBY BENNETT to handle the CAPE DUTIES with DANNY RAY !!! Everything about The FAMOUS FLAMES was about POWER, PRECISION, and PERFORMANCE !!! That's the reason why other groups (like THE STONES) couldn't TOUCH them !!!

Well, The Famous Flames just got inducted into THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME in 2012.... so they must have made SOME kind of "x-over" impact. And since James Brown began his career as a MEMBER of The Famous Flames,(not as a "solo" artist, ) they were all members of the SAME GROUP ...no matter WHAT he went on to do later....Their name was on EVERY RECORD AND CONCERT MARQUEE... right along with his .

JAMES BROWN was NOT known as the "Godfather of Soul" back in 1964...THAT nickname didn't come along until the 1980's He was TOO YOUNG to be the "godfather" of ANYTHING. In the Fifties and Sixties ....he was known as "MR DYNAMITE !!!"

Sorry, not music. It's more of an act and the Flames are supporting actors. I'll take the x-over acts like the Temptations, Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Martha & the Vandellas and the Supremes.

@MarcMoshman, why so dismissive? The sound is indeed MUSIC. in facts the Famous Flames from Toccoa , Georgia, have their roots in Gospel Music-- very different and , n fact, was recorded 10 years earlier than the Detroit sounds of the Motown Musicians you list. The "Georgia Gospel Sound" of the FIFTIES included another Gospel singer who crossed over to rock-- the "Georgia Peach", Little Richard -- and back again to Gospel. Paul McCartney credits the "Georgia Wail" of James Brown and Little Richard as insttumental (no pun intended) in his musical influences, but also the specific element that made his hits "Hey Jude", "Let it Be", "Rocky Racoon","Band on the Run", "Live and Let Die", "My Love", "Maybe I'm AMazed" and many more songs of his that I can't remember of the top of my head. Other modern singer/songwriters who owe much to James Brown and the Georgia Sound and Look are Prince, Michael Jackson, Lenny Kravitz, The Killers, The Rolling Stones, The Faces, Rod Stewart, Primal Scream, Bruce Springsteen, Hall and Oates in addition to Bootsy Collins, Parliament of Funk, Bill Withers, The Manhattans, Stevie Wonder, The Jackson 5, Queen, The Police, Melissa Etheridge...the list goes on and on and on... this isn't my opinion, this is all hat tips from the artists themselves black , white, brown , plaid, and striped - from the fifties through the 2000's -- including. MANY of the Motown artists you mentioned. What is the missing criteria that inspired your generalized and apparently judgemental comment: "This isnt music" ? The harmonies are incredibly tight and thought the drumming is simply phemomenal -- this is a melody-based song. Having said that, that drummer has no where to hide and he is the heartbeat of the band. The discipline of the band is incredible. Do you dismiss Ray Charles' Septaugenarian , raw voice, or the Five Blind Boys of Alabama as "Not Music" as well? If you're going to make that sort of a comment, I'd be very interested in your defense of it. I'm not attacking you, I just feel one should provide aevidence for such a sweeping assessment. The Flames were, frankly cheated, by their management-- not just financially, but in terms of the credit they were due, as th sixties saw the rise of the "Lead SInger". I won't argue taste, as it's sunjective. But the next time you find yourself singing along to the double octave jump and backing harmonies of "....Turn on the Red Light...Roxaaaaaannnnnne" , that is the great great great great grand-nephew of "Please Please Please" and other incredible songs from the original Georgia Gospel and R and B bands of the early to mid 50s. and the Detroit and Motown sounds of the mid-to-late sixites with songs written mainly by Holland-Dozier-Holland.

@@ronniemoon57 I think he must have been watching a different concert -- because the comment makes no sense to me either-- the GA sound was 10 years earliuer than the Detroit sound -- I asked him about it below, but I doubt he;ll answer -- he rendered judgement and moved on. I Agree with you about the The Famous Flames -- tight harmonies, amazing choreography, amazing vocals and performance, and how 'bout the drummer? And nowhere to hide!! What a concert. Legend has it Jagger wouldn;t go on after that, and Brown went to console him and give him a peptalk back stage, and the shy Jagger -- whose onstage persona was years away still, was coaxed to go on , and he and Brown remained friends until Brown's death. It's a wonderful story -- does anyone know if it is true?

No, what it is, is SHOWMANSHIP... something that a lot of groups and artists today sorely lack!! That’s why the music industry and it’s artists today, are so LOUSY !! They feel they have to resort to sexuality, stupid gimmicks, copying classic artists’ styles , and lip- syncing to disguise the fact did they simply can’t perform!!
