james brown self destructs

James Brown, the “hardest working man in show business” redefined soul music with his emphasis on the funk beat and his style would be copied, sampled, and stolen, by many who followed. But his legacy was tarnished by charges of drug use, wife beating, and a police chase that landed him in prison. This is a story I did when he was in prison about his descent into drug use and features footage of some of his bizarre behavior, and a retelling of the police chase by the cops involved. It also contains an interview with boyhood friend & band member Bobby Byrd describing how Brown cheated him out of royalties.

I once waited at a red light in Queens around 4 am when a white Rolls Royce pulled up next to me. James Brown was sitting in the back seat drinking cocktails with two incredible looking women. Man, he sure looked happy.

I think James Brown was really affected more by the death of his son Teddy in a car accident than he ever let on. My opinion is that is what turned him to using drugs. This was briefly touched on in the "Get on up" movie. Like many men of his generation, I think he tended to bury his emotions, often through self medicating. Still the 🐐

I don’t care what the reason is . There is no reason he should’ve been putting his hands on no woman. You not going to use the excuse that your son died to abuse that woman. See women back at that time and further back wasn’t encouraged to defend themselves by use of a firearm. I wish that they would have. Him, just like a lot of bitchass men didn’t want to go get help.

@@The1stClassVillain Not sure how you made an assumption that my comment about James Brown mourning the death of his son by self medicating was a defense of violence against women. I do NOT condone violence against women on any level. My point was about "old school" men not knowing how to deal with their emotions and using self destructive behavior to rationalize their feelings. If you want to start a thread about James beating his women, that's fine. That aspect of his personality takes away from his legacy in my opinion. But it has nothing to do with what I originally stated. Stop being triggered so easily.

@@ansonjackson6254 No maybe you need to clarify yourself in the comment you made. I’m not triggered by shit. I stated my opinion. I interpreted your comment based on what I read and it sounded like you was excusing his behavior. My response to that is still the same. I don’t care what he was going through. That’s never a reason to put your hands on a woman. If that took away from his legacy that’s his fault. It was a legacy he created. All he did was give those white people something to talk about. As we are seeing in this video. When black men do dumb shit, white media can’t wait to talk about it.

A rule of life: Be mindful of who you donate your power to. What I mean is we all have a life force. We all have talent. We all have the ability to offer something to this world. If you give your power into someone who is insecure, they'll often try to make you think you don't have anything to give that they didn't give you. They'll control you with abuse, make you think you're nothing without them and they'll take the best for themselves because they're convinced they've earned that right. James Brown is one of the greatest entertainers ever to live but he didn't get there alone. No one ever does.

It's no mystery that James struggled terribly during his childhood -- hunger, soul-crushing poverty -- and as close as he was with his father in his later years, his father was also very cruel and abusive to James when he was young. Put simply, he carried a lot of anger around inside, and it came out ugly all too often. Not making excuses for the man, not saying it was okay -- just suggesting that that's where a lot of it came from.

I used to see James Brown when I got my haircut next to a record shop called Pyramid music in Augusta. He would always stop for pics and autographs. I’m sure he had his faults like everyone but he loved his people and his town.

His behavior from about 1980 until the 90s was classic PCP behavior. Erratic, inclined to rage, delusional- these were all a part of JBs life. So ironic that a man who had preached against drugs was hobbled by them.

Berry Charlie Wow. Never heard someone say that beating up women is a "struggle". To answer your question, I've never beaten a woman, and I never would. There's no excuse for it. How would you feel if you were one of the women James Brown beat the hell out of? Only animals attack humans.

So he gets in a high speed chase on pcp across state lines, gets his tire shot out but keeps going, eventually gets arrested and brought to jail, and then in jail performs an impromptu concert for the cops who arrested him? That’s the most James Brown shit ever
