James Bond, the sophisticated British spy created by Ian Fleming, embarks on a perilous mission in 'Live and Let Die', originally published in 1954. Set across the vibrant locales of New York, Florida, and Jamaica, Bond tracks the enigmatic and ruthless Mr. Big, who operates a nefarious empire deeply entwined with voodoo and Soviet espionage. The plot kicks off with Bond journeying to Harlem, where he encounters Mr. Big, a crime lord smuggling gold coins to fund Russian operations. Bond is captured but manages to escape with the help of Solitaire, Mr. Big’s mysterious and beautiful fortune-teller who possesses a gift for seeing the future. The two form an alliance, setting their sights on dismantling Mr. Big’s operation. Their pursuit leads them to Florida, where Solitaire is recaptured by Mr. Big’s operatives. Unyielding, Bond continues to Jamaica, determined to rescue Solitaire and stop Mr. Big once and for all. The chase culminates in a tense and dangerous encounter involving sharks and barracudas, testing Bond's mettle and resourcefulness. Notable characters besides James Bond include Felix Leiter, Bond’s CIA ally; Tee-Hee, one of Mr. Big's gruesome henchmen; and Quarrel, who assists Bond in Jamaica. The novel is notable for its intense action scenes, such as the underwater escape and the climatic confrontation involving a keelhauling behind Mr. Big’s yacht. The radio play adaptation, starring Toby Stephens as Bond, aired on BBC Radio 4 in May 2019, preserving the essence and excitement of Fleming's original work, while updating elements to cater to a modern audience.
