Set in Jamaica in the late 1950s, the story begins with James Bond recovering from injuries sustained in his previous mission. Despite concerns for his full recovery, Bond is assigned an ostensibly simple task by his superior 'M'-to investigate the disappearance of Commander Strangways, a key intelligence operative, and his secretary. Bond teams up with Quarrel, a local who aided him before, but his suspicions are piqued upon his arrival when he encounters Chinese individuals showing unusual interest in him. His investigation leads him to Dr. Julius No, a reclusive and feared mine operator on the mysterious Crab Key island. Bond learns that Strangways had been probing into Dr. No's activities before he vanished. Defying warnings about the dangers of Crab Key, Bond and Quarrel sail there at night. They meet Honeychile Rider collecting shells on the shore. Their investigation soon turns perilous as Dr. No’s men attack, destroying Honey's canoe. As they delve deeper, the trio is captured and confronts the grotesque and calculating Dr. No, who reveals a chilling plan involving bird guano and his cruel, mechanical manipulations.
