Having won two BRIT Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, two Ivor Novello Awards, as well as receiving five Grammy Award nominations, James Blunt is a singer-songwriter who has sold over 20 million albums worldwide. He rose to prominence in 2004 with the release of his debut album, Back to Bedlam, which became the best-selling album of the 2000s in the UK. He previously served as a reconnaissance officer in Kosovo under NATO, and actively supports Médecins Sans Frontières and Help For Heroes.
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.
The Oxford Union is deeply grateful and encouraged by the messages of support in response to our determination to uphold free speech. During our 200 year history, many have tried to shut us down. As the effects of self-imposed censorship on university campuses, social media and the arts show no signs of dissipating, the importance of upholding free speech remains as critical today as it did when we were founded in 1823. Your support is critical in enabling The Oxford Union to continue its mission without interruption and without interference. You can support the Oxford Union here: oxford-union.org/supportus

This song is about a girl Blunt dated, but he wrote it years after the relationship ended. When he appeared on the UK show Songbook, Blunt explained: "I guess it's a realization that you'll never be with someone, but the frustration that they are still alive and out there in the world. It can be an incredibly painful idea - I sat with the song for quite a long time. But for me, it's probably my most personal song. Whereas 'You're Beautiful' is about a moment, one second in time of passing that person, the song 'Goodbye My Lover' is about a lifetime's worth of emotion, the fact that that relationship is over, and that life continues. And yeah, it's the most personal song on Back To Bedlam."

I always said to my wife: honey, when i'm dead, please play this song on my furneral. In 2008, i was very sick (hydrocaephelis) and in the hospital i was ready for my final operation. My wife was waiting in the reataurant of the hospital. The chance of surviving the operation was 20%......after a hour, she heard this song in the restaurant. Then she thought that it was a sign, he's dead. He didn't survive the operation. But i did......and every time i hear this song, i'm crying. Sometimes hard and sometimes only tears. But wow, it's so beautiful.

'Cause I saw the end, before we'd begun Yes, I saw you were blind and I knew I had won So I took what's mine by eternal right Took your soul out into the night It may be over but it won't stop there I am here for you if you'd only care You touched my heart, you touched my soul Changed my life and all my goals And love is blind, and that I knew when My heart was blinded by you I've kissed your lips and held your head Shared your dreams and shared your bed I know you well, I know your smell I've been addicted to you Goodbye my lover Goodbye my friend You have been the one You have been the one for me Goodbye my lover Goodbye my friend You have been the one You have been the one for me I am a dreamer and when I wake You can't break my spirit, it's my dreams you take And as you move on, remember me Remember us and all we used to be I've seen you cry, I've seen you smile I've watched you sleeping for a while I'd be the father of your child I'd spend a lifetime with you I know your fears and you know mine We've had our doubts but now we're fine And I love you, I swear that's true I cannot live without you Goodbye my lover Goodbye my friend You have been the one You have been the one for me Goodbye my lover Goodbye my friend You have been the one You have been the one for me And I still hold your hand in mine In mine when I'm asleep And I will bear my soul in time When I'm kneeling at your feet Goodbye my lover Goodbye my friend You have been the one You have been the one for me Goodbye my lover Goodbye my friend You have been the one You have been the one for me I'm so hollow, baby, I'm so hollow I'm so, I'm so, I'm so hollow I'm so hollow, baby, I'm so hollow I'm so, I'm so, I'm so hollow

I have just lost my husband after 35 years. My heart is truly broken and I feel as if someone has ripped my arm off and I will never be the same! I know nothing about James Blunt but this song perfectly captured how I feel and is incredibly emotive and heart breaking. When he sings ‘you have been the one for me’ I just break down. Thank James for an amazing song and a wonderful vocal performance. This song for me is a bit like Sia’s Chandelier - if they had never recorded anything else then they are both total geniuses and great performers. I am so hollow baby!

I’ve seen many many many live performances, and I still always go back to this one. I think this is hands down the best rendition of a song I’ve ever seen. It also ties into my life I’ve lost my lover/ soulmate/ best friend. All through my own faults. And this song sends emotions through me like no song ever has. 90% of the words relate to me and my former partner. And this live version is the best one. If only I could turn back time and change the things that went wrong and made her fall out of love with me but that’s not possible. So I’ll live forever more knowing it could have been, should have been and possibly wouldn’t have been different but wasn’t because of me. The price you pay.
