The 50's Westerns ruled on TV, I have myself season1 +2 of Gunsmoke , It began with Dillon standing on Boot Hill , that first season an most of the stories were from the radio show . I also liked Arness in How The West Was Won too .

I have the early days library of Gunsmoke & The Duke did kick off the series with a video monologue. The producers did want John Wayne to be Matt Dillon, but as we all know Jim got the part.

under-rated a subtle, talented actor especially with his face-when Dillon shows contempt and loathing with eyes and mouth, without saying a word, you know it's time to get the fuck outta Dodge, fast

Actually I can't imagine a better choice for Matt Dillon. Better I say, grudgingly, than the Duke.
