Legend has it that he slept in a bush because he was trying to avoid the curse of the cabbages

Since I live in Basingstoke, I now have exact visualisations of James Acaster asleep in a bush in a red dress by the train station. I will now think that every time I am at the station now.

It made me look it up with Google Maps and found the spot where the taxis are waiting for customers with a bush close by which I assume was the one he was referring to.... so funny when he says 'gentrified' in response yo David Mitchel's question were the leafs 'variegated?' James is so funny the way he brings his story...

This might be my all time favourite WILTY clip. I’ve watched it so many times and there are loads of great moments from everyone! I especially love Melvin’s realisation that James wasn’t just wearing a dress in the bush 😂

Fun fact: a dismembered body in a bag was actually found at Basingstoke train station a few years ago. The murderer was a depressed Buddhist monk. He was working at a hotel in the town and killed one of his work colleagues.

Bush is definitely better than a bench. I'm team bush.

For sure, only in the case of frozen ground might the bench be warmer, although wind/precipitation levels matter a lot.

I did too, almost. Missed a train connection so just stayed the night outside Basingstoke station. I wasn't in a dress, mind you. And I was on the other side of the station, ended up just leant up against the wall of the station. Less hoodlums that side too. No idea why this other fella wants a bench so badly! That's the opposite of shelter.

the bush-bench debate is interesting. I actually think the bench would be warmer, as you lose so much of your body heat to the ground. If you could use some kind of air mattress in the bush, that would be the warmest. If not, a bench that's not in direct gale-force winds would probably be better.

@@colemantrebor6574A (wood) bench would be a better insulator, meaning you wouldn’t lose as much heat. However, a bush would almost certainly be warmer due to the lack of wind. One thing James says is that the bush was roomy though, which is also bad for heat preservation.
