Jakarta Street Food - Local Indonesian Gado-Gado!

One of the most popular Jakarta street food dishes is gado-gado. For my full Jakarta travel and food guide, check this out: migrationology...
Gado gado is an Indonesian dish that you’ll find on nearly every street corner throughout Jakarta - it’s one of the most common street food dishes in the city. For this video, I happen to be near Citywalk Mall, just south of downtown, and right along Jalan Karet Pasar Baru Timur 5, there’s a nice row of street food stalls that set up during lunchtime hours. There’s a lot of good food to eat, but I decided to go straight for a plate of gado-gado.
After taking a seat on a plastic stool, I ordered a plate and he got busy making it. He first made the peanut sauce, peanut sauce is one of the most important components of gado gado. He added some peanut paste, some sugar, and water, and then ground up some chili and garlic to add to it. Once the consistency was right, he added in handfuls of pre cooked vegetables and rice cakes, and mixed it all up into a salad. Gado gado is technically a salad, but it’s definitely not a light and fluffy salad, but it’s a dense and hearty salad, with plenty of carbs and starches, and made rich with the peanut sauce.
What I love about gado-gado is the mix of ingredients all wrapped up in the thick and nutty peanut sauce. While the sauce can be a bit too sweet sometimes, the this version wasn’t too sweet, but nicely balanced with chilies and garlic, and a good mixture of vegetables. Gado-gado is one of the most popular Jakarta street food dishes, and highly enjoyed this plate in downtown Jakarta.

You know, what i love about this guy is that he literally eat the food where we, Indonesian, normally eat. Not from some specifically restaurant-picked. Because normally Indonesian (street) food hygienes are... quite below the average and that makes foreigners such as him to be careful to eat from any kind of Indonesian street food. But not him. Hey Mark i hope you bring some of your own digestive medicine... just in case... but i really hope you still want to enjoy other of our food even though "something" really happen to your stomach. 😉. Welcome to the "taste heaven" of South East Asia!

+hendriyawan Hendri mantap bro, dari vlog dia pertama di jakarta gw yakin dia bakal nyobain gado2, tapi gw pikir di restoran/rumaha makan modern, ternyata dia makan yg di pinggir jalan, dan itu keputusan yg tepat bgt. gado2 on street food is so much better taste than gado2 in restaurant,, hha

What I like from your videos is that you didn't act like the 'stereotype' foreigners who are reluctant to try this and that, protecting their digestive system. In every country, you always try to eat like locals and having trust on the food, so you can see the beauty of every dishes. Super cool and respect!

This is what food blogger supposed to make! Not like most of our Indonesian "Commercialized" food blogger.. Most of our food blogger will only review food or places thatt can pay them, and the amount is quite big actually... And that makes their review isn't objective,, any place that pay them would simply get a good review.. In fact their food is just plain and common,, tend to be fugly... Anyway, Hope that Indonesian food blog could actually learn many things from you,, Thank you Mark for visiting our beloved country! Hope to see you sometimes.. Cheers!

Awesome, Mark! Seems like you've found a great place to have lunch in Jakarta for future visitors. Mr Andy will be getting more business thanks to you! A little thing, though. What you had was not actually gado-gado. Notice that his cart says 'gado-gado & ketoprak'? What you had was ketoprak which is very similar to gado-gado, but with: 1. Less vegetables; 2. Rice vermicelli; 3. Kecap manis (sweet soy sauce) in the peanut sauce. The difference is really subtle, though, and even most Indonesians wouldn't have noticed either ☺

Fantastic! Your humble and honest review really inspires on how to be a nice person...and a great food journalist! :) Yesss I believe as you notice in other comments that rice noodles / vermicelli (bihun) is a twist that Andy does in his stall becasue traditionally gado-gado does not contain it. On the other hand, ketoprak, uses it. But ketoprak uses ketupat (remember the rice cake from coto makassar) as the carb base and no veggies in it.

Gado2 is one of my favourite foods, it's just I'm not really sure it has the so'un (the rice noodle) there. And what you say about the peanut sauce is very true. I used to hate eating veggies but I love Gado2 nonetheless, it's the peanutwork for sure! Anyway if you love peanut sauce you really should try rujak cingur, it's Surabayan dish, almost like Gado-gado but a little bit different, the peanut sauce mixture is different and the salad mixture as well (they add tempe cuts) , it also has cingur (cow's nose) and in some version (not my favourite version) has some fruits added to it. Well there is rujak buah (fruit rujak) which is different from rujak cingur and that one is good to, but fruits in rujak cingur, I don't like that.

There are a lot of names and few different ingredients and composition with this Indonesian salad... In Jakarta they're called Karedok and another, Ketoprak... then what you ate there,, Gado-gado.. although I am not very sure about it. Because in my hometown Jogjakarta, we have 2 different types of Indonesian Salad.. Gado-gado,, and Lotek.... What you ate were just like Lotek in my place. The distinguished feature I can differentiate between lotek and gado-gado is that the peanut paste is not mix together.. just pour on top of the greens (Gado-gado). FYI: the peanut used is groundnut (Arachis hypogaea).. and they are deepfried first, before grounding.. Terimakasih sudah datang ke Indonesia. :)
