Jak X Level in Jak 3 !!! (IT IS ACTUALLY POSSIBLE)

A childhood dream of mine is to be able to walk in the areas of Jak X. Unfortunately Jak X doesn't have enough leftovers to make this possible. But its level files are close enough to Jak 3's. And with a lot of effort, they can even be ported.
This is the first time ever that this has been done. I chose one of the simplest Jak X levels ('eight'), just to see if this could even work. It appears that it works fine, apart from actors. But I will gradually try more complex levels, and hopefully things will work for those levels as well. Maybe one day we can walk in Kras City 👀

    Seeing this kinda makes me wish they made a crash tag team racing style game where Jak could still run around an open world.

    Something I'd love to see is walking through Jak X's Haven City, and with this, it might be a possibility now! Thanks so much for your constant discoveries, Luminar! This is truly awesome. I wanted to ask something btw, is there a possibility to port Jak 3 cars to Jak X? idk if this was asked before

    Porting code is definitely impossible for now, due to how code works. Cars are different between these games. Maybe if Jak X ever comes to OpenGOAL 👁️

    I'm loving these Jak X videos lately. From the cutscene leftover files (as we know they are pre-rendered in the game), I was curious if we have any models left over of Jak and other characters from the cutscenes that we could potentially rip from the game? It would be amazing to have those models. I was responsible for ripping some of the models from the trilogy back in the day, and have always dreamed of getting those Jak X assets :)

    There is a 'daxter-highres' art group (basically a file that has models and animations) in the 'rustyh' level, though it is not placed anywhere. I am assuming it was used during cutscenes. Also I think the credits uses very high quality models. It is in-engine. So the models must be in the files. Once Jak 3 OpenGOAL begins/progresses, I may be able to use the tools to rip stuff from Jak X. I was able to achieve partial success with Jak II models before Jak 1 OpenGOAL was even done. Also, how were you responsible for ripping models?

    @@Iotatheprotogen I don't really do that. The 'jak-project' has good tools for it though. Before that there was no easy way to rip models.

    That's amazing, it's exciting to know it may be possible in the future. I and another forum user (I can't remember which forum now, maybe Facepunch?) utilized Ninja Ripper (or maybe a tool before that) and Cheat Engine to force T-Pose the models in the model viewer in Jak 3 to rip the cutscene models. @@LuminarLight I'm also really happy to hear that since OpenGOAL there's now an easier way to rip the models :D

    From a technical perspective this is very interesting. Im curious to see how this works out in maybe even other jak game locations ported to Jak3 like various places frok 2,1 & X like Kras city like mentioned. It would be interesting to access to certain secret rooms & areas

    The games aren't 100% compatible with each other. But fortunately 3 and X seem to be close enough, though not perfect of course.

    There will be much less limitations in OpenGOAL. But for now this is the best we got.

    They are not exactly. Requires lot of manual modifications, and even then for example actors will never work. But it is much better than nothing.

    I just dreamed of this stuff earlier (Just woken up). The dream was that through more manipulation of the game's technical quirks via debug (As opposed than modding and porting as shown here), I managed to get an early, beta build of the Dead Town and Pumping Station for Jak 3 to render, and in their areas on the map and with the city still active. There were even crates and orbs left over, and one strange thing was that Samos's hut was opposite of where it's meant to be, indicating the Dead Town was not going to be a copy and paste of its prior rendition and got cut before being fully built. Of course as far as we know those locations were never going to be included. Always thought it was a shame they weren't and that it's an example of how Jak 3 was a rush job with it's development time being only one year if that. Now, this video makes me wonder: Is it possible to mod those two areas I mention into Jak 3? I'm sure you'll tell me it would be a colossal undertaking for no real gain, but I would love it if it weren't too difficult and someone did that. I have always wished we could go to those two areas in Jak 3.

    Jak II levels can mostly be loaded in the Jak 3 July 2004 Internal build.

    @@LuminarLight maybe, but what I'd really like to see one day is mentioned areas being modded into the game. And with some such as the dark star and war factory being visible before the end of the story, the buildings from inside the city - the new renovated section - sticking out above the walls, and the palace no longer being visible. Would also need to work their airlocks into the new renovated city section of Jak 3. That way it would feel like you are in the present when visiting them in Jak 3, not being transported back to the time of Jak 2.

    These are impossible for now, and will only ever be possible in OpenGOAL (though that is not guaranteed either).

    @@LuminarLight I understand. I think one important change, and I imagine it can be done right now anyway, is to let us disable the marauders and light sandstorm (Unless the bad weather cheat is on) in the desert. This is a massive issue that totally ruins the desert - a huge part of the game - for me. Non-stop harassment from enemies. Can't drive peacefully, observe the atmosphere and the peaceful music, and enjoy driving around. This is a big fuck up they made and I cannot understand why they did this without providing an option for the desert to be free of irritating marauders and have clear weather.

    If I had to guess, probably quite a bit as, just like Insomniac with Ratchet Deadlocked, this was made on a Naughty Dog skeleton crew as some of the team began early work on Uncharted while Jak 3 was wrapping and another large group went on to begin learning the PS3 architecture and starting development of Uncharted while the remaining small amount was let to work on this quick turnaround sunsetting title for the PS2 hardware that was soon to be on its way out. My proof of this code connection is the fact that the game uses and iteration of the same engine from the prior titles as well as the fact the debug code present all the way back to Precursor Legacy is still present and active, but it does nothing, at least the community can't find anything it toggles yet.

    Not enough. There are some minor leftovers for onfoot Jak gameplay, but most of it is gone.

    1 year is a very long time. And Naughty Dog was a very capable and efficient studio back then.

    Has anybody figured out how to modify Dark Jak so that he doesn't deactivate after a dark bomb/blast? This does happen in the oracle room in Jak 2 so maybe it could be done in the rest of the game as well.

    It probably wouldn't be too difficult, but as far as I know nobody cared to look into it so far. I know I never looked into it at least.

    Not necessarily, but being able to do real time memory editing makes things easier to control.

    Probably ps2 only, can't really mod the games on ps4 or ps5 afaik. And while it should be possible on ps2, it would be very uncomfortable, I won't even bother. Tutorial will likely not exist for a while, if ever. A lot of very complicated things are needed to get this done. I will create a tool that should make some steps much easier, but it will still be too difficult I assume. We will see in the future.

    Jak X was made from Jak 3. But it was developed for a year. That is a very long time, so many things were changed/improved.
