JAIL IN ITALY: Felons on Europe's last prison island Gorgona | WELT Documentary

Ғылым және технология

In the middle of Europe lies the prison island of Gorgona. Off Italy's coast, around a hundred serious criminals serve their sentences here. The convicted criminals spend their days behind thick prison walls at night and demanding work on the plantation during the day. The guards are unarmed but operate an efficient surveillance system of dynamic control. Those inmates who fail to parry are transferred back to one of the overcrowded detention centers on the mainland.

Well done Italy, on a fantastic way of running an organised prison method which seems to tick every single box. I love the way every one is going about doing their jobs, with no sign of any one having a need to be rebellious or hard handed. The Island looks amazing too, love what they produce, and the hard work will make them healthy, wiser, and not get bored. Many thanks for the video of Gorgona, a place I never knew existed. 😎

I also watched prison in Germany documentary, Aachen prison, conditions there are much better than in US, they literally have key for their cell so they can lock it when they leave, but guards have key of second lock. They have TV's in their cells, someone even Playstation, fridge, photos on wall, they can also work, they got common room, they pay prisoners to take german classes to teach them language, free healh care and medicine etc. There are people outside prison who barely survive on minimal wage jobs, do hard work, and they need to cook their meals, sometimes even eat less because money shortages, while prisoners get free already prepared food and they do easy jobs and get about 100 EUR for 1 month work which they can use to purchase additonal things like chocolate, tobacco, shampoo etc. It may not be a good lifestyle for some young person who likes to travel, but for older ones is not so bad😂

Prison isn’t a walk in the park, but this seems very humane mentally as well as psychically . Even not having to wear prison uniforms is a plus. Certainly the food looks far superior than most prisons and it seems the men take pride in their work. At least they are paid something for their work and thus can buy extras. It looks way better and more respect shown than “60 Days In”.

This is a medium security prison by American or Brazilian standards. I am sure Italy has a pair of maximum security prisons or special handling unit prisons for particularly nasty gang affiliated thugs. All more power to the Italian justice system if they can reform criminals into good citizens again without resorting to extreme encarceration living conditions.

Gorgona my friend is a holiday resort! 14 hours a day free movement with or without work and 10 hours behind bars in cells that most people in many countries in the world envy!! Very good food, lots of work experience to be gained and courses to follow which at the end of the day is paid as well!! If a convict has the fortune to be placed there, he can (if behaved) live a decent till good life while he is there and have skills and a future when he is released!! NOT a prison in any way - shape or form!! Titel should be: "Last holiday resort for hardened criminals!"

It's as much a rehabilitation centre as a prison. What is the point in sending people to prison for 10 years, to release them and they commit a crime and return. If you can rehabilitate people, they can contribute to society! They can pay taxes, have a job, bring a family up, TELL OTHERS where they went wrong and also actually enjoy a drug/gamble/crime free life. When I was in the army it was a lot harder than this but it was my choice and I was getting paid, some of these criminals (not all obviously) WILL turn their lives around and that is the jobs of prisons, reform. Norway has the most lenient prisons in the World and also the lowest reoffending rates. So what is the point in sending people to prison if they're just going to come back?

Each prisoner is forced to learn an occupation, as well as, self control! It's interesting, but their prison black market must be odd! Drone's deliveries?

Something I’m curious about is what is the compensation for the correction officers working there? Are used to be a correctional officer myself in the states. But I mean like there’s got to be some sort of benefit to transfer there otherwise, why would you choose to be away from your family, your friends and I’m presuming for safety they can’t just have those people stay with them on the island. Does anyone know do they get like a double salary thing or a huge bonus for working there again? I’m just curious how that works and why an officer would choose to work at that facility. It’s a beautiful place but you’re giving up your life just like the inmates are completely.

I think that this prison, which is different than many others, but is still prison, might be an ideal setting for so many men and women who have potential and are motivated to move in with their lives, in a different direction from what put them there. I know that in the US we have special prisons but the violence and return rates remain so high. There are other ways, like the above, to actually "reform" people other than to throw them into a box for however many years, let them go only to see them come back, for so many different reasons. Finland is experimenting with new, "open" prisons...and it is working. Give people something to do, nurture, every day..and the majority will. Of course, there will always be chronic people always going in and out of prison...but at least a prison like the above, offers hope and not a place which will box you in until your release date..in my opinion. PS...take a look at Rikers, in NYC, if you want to see why the system must change.
