The most dangerous RB in the league.

I think Sam may have missed that "offensive weapon" just meant for the Lions that Gibbs is a "weapon" on offense. The Lions clearly don't ascribe to the same draft position values that the rest of the draft community seems to, and I'll bet they were just saying that they care WAY more about a player being a "Villian" for the other team, and way less about which position that player fills. The recent Chris Spielman interview with his brother Rick was pretty illuminating on the Lions evaluation process, IMO.

I love this kid. I have not been this excited since Pavel Datsyuks rookie season. Just wait and see.

It's usually not the years that end RBs careers, it's big hits and the every-snap collisions. If they can mitigate the damage he takes while Monty is under contract Gibbs should be a top level back for quite a while.

Since Coach Campbell took the reigns the Lions have never run an offense with a featured back. I'm a bit of an old school guy when it comes to running the ball so I was pleasantly surprised when Gibbs ran some plays between the tackles right out of the gate against the Chiefs in the opener and ran the ball well. Swift was forever bouncing everything outside and would sit with a hangnail (okay, maybe that's a stretch, but he didn't like to get hurt or play hurt when he was with the club). Gibbs can do it all and I like the way Johnson uses both backs. If the Lions aren't #1 in rushing it's because that's not part of the plan. Top 3 at a minimum in total offense again this year. This team has a chip, unfinished business in Frisco, and nobody knows it better than Gibbs considering he coughed the ball up at a real bad time in that NFC Championship. Don't expect a repeat of that debacle. Gibbs is going to be one of the best all-round offensive players this season, period. I could see 1,000 and 500 from him this year. It's gonna be fun being a Lions fan in 2024, bank on it.

You wont and dont see Gibbs and Monty share a drive. they alternate between series. Giving Ben Johnson two different offensive schemes. Defenses have to prepare for 2 instead of 1. Although both backs are interchangeable, so you just never know what's coming.

I'm a homer, but I also believe this. I think he can go for 2k all purpose and 20 TDs now that he's slowed everything down.

Impossible, he won't have the total touches. Dmont was a 1000 yard rusher last year and they are going to run it as a tandem, Gibbs will see a uptick in usage but he's not going to be a bellcow yet.

"Joker" Gibbs is coming this year... On the field with LaPorta (also a Joker) - that's TWO Sean Payton "Jokers" on the field at once ... Joker is a uniquely capable RB and or TE from the Sean Payton offense that's multiple and forces matchup problems for defenses. As example, it's a RB who can run the entire WR route tree and gain separation as if he was a WR. Also, a RB in the traditional sense who can run the ball in between the tackles and outside as well as catch the ball out of the backfield.

I hadnt heard this insight before and i believe youre 100% correct. Ppl like to give ben all the credit for our offense, which he deserves much, but dan has an unmistakeable influence as well. And i think hearing your joker analysis that it definitely is a fundamental core of our game planning. I think dan has given ben johnson a sort of framework to build the playcalling around and ben has run with it and added his flavor on top of it, if that makes sense. And sean payton would have definitely influenced that heavily. Dan called plays in 2021 after he fired anthony lynn midway thru and we finished the season 3-3-1 and our offense had started to really resemble some what it looks like today. And it wasnt decided if ben would call plays until at the end of training camp in 2022.

Sam, to imply that it was possibly just semantics from the Lions org about Gibbs being a “weapon” means that you didn’t watch him in college, particularly at Bama.

Short guy still trying to defend his terrible takes when Gibbs was drafted. The Lions didn’t just hand him the ball and treat him like a running back. Gibbs was 2nd on the team in targets! Like it or not, he’s an offensive weapon.
