Now I know that the cylinder head doesn't need to come of the block in order to adjust valve timing. That made my day! Thanks for another good tutorial!

Make sure you slacken the camshaft your not checking the clearences on otherwise you'll bend a valve.

Great video! Unfortunately we have to adjust the valve clearance at our „new“ ‘78 XJ12. The adjustment process itself is the same for the 6 and 12 cylinder engines. But do you have some advise for taking out the camshafts and especially removing/refitting the timing chain at the V12s?

On some of these high mileage engines the valve stem will wear a divot into one side of the shim. (I noticed the shim Adam pulled out had an obvious divot on the underside at 7:18.) Not sure if this is intentional by the designers but it does allow the valves to maintain adequate clearance longer because the divot wears about the same rate as the valve seat regresses. But pay attention when you measure the installed shim with a mic. You need to measure from inside the divot or it will appear thicker than the cam sees. This can lead to some confusion when replacing with the new smaller sized shim resulting in a much tighter gap than you started with! The shims go from 0.085" to 0.110" in 0.001" increments. "A" is the thinnest and "Z" being thickest.

It might make sense to flatten out the divot using Emory paper. What do you think?

  • @cratecruncher6687

@@DAVJULART The divots won't hurt anything. People sometimes thin these shims slightly by grinding but it's usually because they don't have the right size. If you alter one make sure the two shim surfaces are closely parallel or it could lead to unusual wear in other areas like the tappets and guides.

@@cratecruncher6687 if you have a surface grinder to grind parallel that might be effective but I'd think the cost of new shim is a better bet than the risks of the poor results you highlight. Alternatively the shim can be used flat side down taking the thickness from the periphery as you'll have two usable thicknesses taking the divot into account.

Another fantastic & informative video, following lack of torque / incorrect seating of studs, & odd timing chain / sprocket setting, I'm sure you are not surprised at findings with shims ? 😅

Thank you my friend! Oh no, not surprised at all. I've found another thing... The camshaft beatings were overtightened it looks like. I think they can still be saves but yet another thing. Even though I was already planning to have a look at the brakes now I think I have even more reason to do so 😂

@@LivingWithAClassic I wonder if the same person assembled Block & Crank etc. , you must be wondering if you are safe to replace head without checking bottom end first ? It would be a terrible shame to find out later he has made errors there too 😔

I'm gonna meet up with the previous owner to get all the old pappers for the car. He days there receipts in there for work done on the engine. Judging by the dirt on the block I think they just did tye head. Engine ran very quietly and had great oil pressure. I think I'm gonna take a chance (might regret it later) but I don't have the budget for a complete rebuild at this moment.

@@LivingWithAClassic Fantastic news, if it has not been touched by the person who did the head, I would risk not touching block too, you can see piston crowns, & with sump removed you should be able to see & feel enough to satisfy yourself all is well

So this is where you start if you have an xk engine with that loud tapping valve noise? there's really not much adjustment you can do without removing the head?

What about 0.011". cam caps are numbered. With cyl head in car make sure you slacken the cam you not checking clearences on, & vica versa. Why didn't you clean the mating surfaces.

A smear of oil mimics the cams in use and a tight feeler gauge will leave but a smear in its wake which is of marginal thickness.
